Outline Itinerary Day 1st-4th: Salt pans, coastal wetlands and mountains in Valencia Region. 4 nights in Hotel Gijón, Gandia Day 5th-6th: We cross the steppes of Albacete looking for Bustards and Sandgrouses. Visit to the National Park of Tablas de Daimiel. 2 nights in Hotel la Beltraneja, Belmonte Day 7th-8th: Steppes and forest for the emblematic Spanish Imperial Eagle and Black Vulture. 2 nights in Posada del Camino Real, Torrelaguna Day 9th-10th: In search of the “diablo” (Dupont’s Lark). 2 nights in Hotel Puerta de Sepúlveda , Sepúlveda Day 11th-13th: Breathtaking landscape and alpine birds in Picos de Europa. 3 nights in Casa Cayo, Potes Day 14th: Transfer to Bilbao or Madrid airports according to the group

Holiday details Day 1st: Arrive to Valencia Airport and transfer south to Gandia for the following 4 days. If times allows, we will drive around the Albufera de Valencia where we hope to see the first Sandwich, Whiskered and Gull-billed Terns as well as Little Bittern, Squacco and Purple Heron. Day 2nd-5th: The following days will be spent along the coast and the mountains of Alicante. On the coastal wetlands and saltpans we will look for Red-knobbed Coot, Marble Teal, Slender and Audouin’s Gulls among others. Thousands of Greater Flamingos will be feeding along with shorebirds such as Collared Pratincoles, Shanks, Kentish Plovers and Black-winged Stilts to name few.

These days in the region will produce many more species. On the dense reeds, we hope to see Moustached, Savi’s and Great Reed Warblers and in the limestone ravens we will look for Black Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, Olivaceus Warbler, Rufus Bush-Robin and Bonelli’s Eagle. In addition, we will have time to explore the scrubland and Mediterranean forest on search of Common Crossbill, Western Orphean Warbler, Subalpine, Dartford and Spectacle Warblers. One night we venture to see Red-necked Nightjars. On the 5th day, we will set off to La Mancha where we will encounter our first steppe birds: Calandra and Thekla Larks, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouses, Little and Great Bustards, Rock Sparrows, Bee-eaters and Stone Curlews. Late afternoon, we will continue our journey to the medieval village of Belmonte to our Hotel built in the 18th century. Day 6th-7th: Today we will visit the National Park of Tablas de Daimiel where we should encounter our first European Rollers, White Storks, Black Kites, Spanish Sparrows and Lesser Kestrels. After dinner, we will visit a reliable place for Eagle Owl. On the 7th day, we will spend most of the day visiting the surroundings steppes and forests to add some species we might have missed they day before. Late afternoon, we will continue our journey towards Madrid and to our accommodation in Torrelaguna. Day 8th: We will spend all day looking for our main targets in the hills and mountains near Madrid: Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Vulture, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Iberian Magpie. Day 9th-10th: Our adventure will take us to Sepúlveda but before reaching this quaint village, we will stop to look for Rock Thrush, Cirl Bunting and raptors. The following day we will focus on the hard and elusive Dupont’s Lark. In addition, there are lot of chances of seeing new species such as: Short-toed lark and Woodlark, Tawny Pipit and Black-eared Wheatear.

Day 11th-13th: Today we will drive north to the Cantabrian Mountains. We will make some stops in route to witness the beauty of these mountains and to look out for Dipper, Yellowhammer and Red-backed Shrike. The following days will be spent looking for the specialties: Wallcreeper, Snowfinch, Alpine Accentor and Iberian Chiffchaff. Furthermore, there will be plenty of butterflies and orchids. Day 14th: Travel to Bilbao or Madrid airports depending on the flight timetables.
