INTRODUCTION: Its funny, one of my nicknames growing up was MacGyver**. It started when we were on a 4 horse hitch wagon ride with Clydedales pulling at my Uncle’s farm, one of the straps had broke that held the bits and we stopped moving. Uncle started fussing about looking for something to fix it and I just happened to have one of those East Coast comfy fluffy jackets that have a drawstring waist to keep out the biting wind in the fall. I asked Uncle if the drawstring would help and he said yes! So I forfeited the drawstring that was helping keep me warm for the greater good.

I’ve been doing things like that ever since. Now I’m not saying all of the things I’ve suggested worked or were even viable, its just I gave people choices to move forward in a decision towards their goal. It never dawned on me to put this into a book. , ...then one day, a friend Robyn I had met in Austin TX at SXSW moved to LA and she call and call with so many different requests that she finally screamed….”you must put all of this into a book”, so I did. **Hit ABC TV show, The story arc of MacGyver follows the laid-back, extremely resourceful secret agent Angus MacGyver, played by Richard Dean Anderson. He prefers non-violent conflict resolution wherever possible and refuses to carry or use a gun. MacGyver works as a problem solver….credited from Wikepedia) 5

The book started out as www.LAforFreeAlmost.com divvying up info so people could survive Los Angeles on little or no money. Everything from getting Hollywood Bowl seats for $1.00 to free health care. I really enjoyed the feedback of people that actually applied the books to their life and shared this with the publisher, Maziar of www.ScripCopier.com and collectively we decided to donate books to non-profits for their gift bags. There is a great resource called www.HelpAReporterOut.com (thank you HARO) and they had the info I needed to cull which non-profits would benefit from these books. Here is a list of where we have donated so far and will update the website as time permits. http://blackwomenineurope.ning.com/events/a-gathering-of-sisters JORDANFARMERFOUNDATION Small Business Administration Window to the world Women Enterprise www.athenslimestone.lib.al.us www.awbw.org www.cciff.com www.ewomennetwork.com www.hollywoodsuccess.com www.indieproducer.net www.journey-forward.org www.kittenrescue.org www.Koffeehouse.com www.nwcr.org.uk www.preventblindness.org www.runnerinsight.com www.sectionbmovie.com www.sectionBmovie.com www.sosc.org www.thebuzzgirls.com www.thesmartmamama.com www.thetwinkieawards.com www.tilpr.com www.tripletconvention.org www.ushersnewlook.org www.writegirl.org 6

Resources can profoundly change your perception, life, attitude. Laugh as you may, but, for example, the one resource I mentioned on the previous page– www.HelpAReporterOut.com not only led me to the non profits that benefitted from donations of the first version of this book as www.LAforFreeAlmost.com but it led me to www.Galtime.com which is the inspiration for this incarnation as www.DidYouKnow.la With www.GalTime.com I committed to posting info on their site, they requested video which we shot at www.BigVision.com and delivered. The gals of www.galtime.com that were at the other end of the country looking at the footage were so excited with this useful information that it opened my minds eye that people all over the world, not just LA might benefit from these snippets of info. So here it is, the revamped version of information, may it help make your trek through life easier. When I moved from RI to CA with just a laptop, stereo some clothes and a fax/phone. I survived with the information in this book, I still refer to it. From starting out on a futon in the living room of a loft with a dog and two roommates to owning a home in a few years, there is something to be said about being smart with the money that you have. If I can do it, you can do it. Wishing you all the joy life can bring. Susan Johnston

NEED TO MAKE MONEY? In this section my goal is to give you resources that can get you money rolling into your pocket starting now. If you take the time to register with the Market research groups below by either calling them or entering your info into their databases online, when there is a match for what they are looking for to what you entered, they will contact you, ask you some questions and if there is a fit, you can earn from $30.00 to $250.00 (sometimes cash) for just a few hours of your time in either a one on one session or with a group of about 8 people. Its not only a way to have someone pay for your insights and opinions, you can learn other viewpoints and meet interesting people, sometimes they even feed you!

Need Answers? Every step of the way through every challenge that faced me, I moved into it, assessed it, dealt with it and got through it. I'm not saying it was easy, it wasn't. But, the alternative was to stay in a space of unresolved issues which usually had emotions and interactions that just weren't healthy for me or anyone around me. So, I endured and dealt with the issue at hand no matter how painful. Some challenges took years to heal, some keep popping up, most for now I can move through quickly-thank goodness. Here are some of the things I did to get me through. Even though its so nice to every once in awhile recheck where you are at, I’ve found that if I just ask myself, what is my hearts desire? And start moving in that direction, honestly and truthfully, its amazing what transpires. Here are some other questions that might help you start moving things forward in your life in a positive direction: Right at this moment, what would make this a good day? A great day? What are you most looking forward to this evening? Tomorrow? Where would you most like to visit, vacation? In a dream world, what would be your dream job? What is the happiest memory so far? Yes, there is one, find it. What were the high points of your year? What were the low points? Most inspired moments? What were the lessons of this year for you? What are your new goals for next year? What are the big stretches for you? Personally? Professionally? Socially?

21

Need Answers continued: I’ve discovered things along the way like What you do does matter Why you do it matters IAsk yourself for example, If _____________________ what does my life become Internally, externally then throw that in the drawer and start doing outcomes become if your serious about outcome, there is a need that rises above and gets you motivated Let’s talk about work. If every job paid $10.00 an hour regardless of if you were in military, internet, entertainment, medicine etc. What would you do? Because, Money aside you can now ask yourself Who am I here to be? What would I do without money? Turn passion into cash i.e.?

Start doing what you love to do, even if its for free in your non working hours. You will be happier and healthier for it and other people will see your pride and passion and paying jobs could very come out of it.

What Things Are You Passionate about in Life? What Things Bring You Joy, Peace and Fulfillment? What Are Your Strongest Abilities? What Irritates You the Most? What Value Do You Bring to Others?

Here are 2 stories for you so you can start seeing how my brain thinks and how you can be anywhere and still make things happen on time and within your budget. STORY 1 I was producing a film in Mt. Shasta CA it was late afternoon on a Friday when I was informed we needed 30 copies of a 110 page script. We had the slowest copier in the world with one ink cartridge. The copy stores in town were closing and/or were 9 cents a page. The next nearest town was 3 hours each way that could handle this order this late. So, I called my printer/publisher, now I knew he only charged 2 cents a digital copy and had a FedEx dept. in his store so I asked: “Maziar, If I email you a PDF, would you be able to print 30 copies of 110 and overnight them to me by 10:30am Saturday delivery?” He said yes. Here is the second story for you so you can start seeing how my brain thinks and how you can be anywhere and still make things happen on time and within your budget. STORY 2 Here is what I knew: I needed a new car Didn’t want the depreciation of a new car Wanted something with a warranty I wanted another VW Beetle (I had the prototype which only came out in hardtop) I knew if ever in my life I was going to get a convertible and I think everyone should have the opportunity to ride in one or own one at least once in their life, now was it. I also knew that it would have to be automatic and what colors I did not want. I went online and searched. Now CA is a very big state, but I knew specifically what I wanted so I searched the entire state and clicked the price range , the tires, stereo, engine size, and I only wanted yellow or blue. Only 2 choices came up, both at VW dealerships. One dealership was 2.5 hours north of LA and the car was yellow and the other was 2.5 hours south of LA and the car was a “fun” color, Robins Egg Blue (light/sky blue) The price said $16998.00 So I went down pre-approved, took the car for a test drive, loved it and started negotiating. The look on the car salesmans face was priceless. He said, did you look at the sticker? I hadn’t, he said, go look at the sticker. The price they were selling the car on the lot was for $24998...the internet price was already $8K less than what the sticker was. He then proceeded to tell me it was a leader, to bring people in and he couldn’t go any lower. He was right, book value on the car was more than I paid for it. All I’m saying is if you know what you want, spend the time and energy, you too could save $8K on the car of your dreams 27

There are Doctors and Dentists that will cut you a break if you pay with cash. I had all of the mercury removed from my teeth from an amazingly reputable dentist while I was on location for filming. I let him know I didn’t have coverage for this and would appreciate it if I could have some form of in house discount for paying up front, he did. 6 Mercury fillings were removed for 1K. The 7th tooth I had to do in LA CA because of time constraints and the best price I could do there was $00. for that one tooth. Now when people ask me where to get their Mercury removed, I tell them its more cost effective to drive or fly to the place I had mine done, stay overnight and come home, sort of like a mini dental vacation! Thanks for taking the time to do something for yourself. With www.DidYouKnow.la Best to you, Susan Johnston [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] 32

YOU’RE MY INSPIRATION: Dear Susan, My roommate recently brought home the LA For Free Almost booklet he picked up in a cafe and suggested I look through and I was filled with shock, joy, great excitement to find every bit of information I could ever want to know in one fun easy to navigate little booklet. I moved to LA about a year ago from NYC and spent my first year sort of lost in a maze which sort of felt like clinging to the edge of a building by my fingernails. Your compilation of information is a great blessing and please allow me to tell you, you are an angel. Thank you for bringing clarity. In your unique way, you have made the world a better place. Sincerely and with great appreciation, Sucai L I purchased a copy of your book "L.A. for free", and I have to say, it's really useful. As a 19 year old actress and college student in L.A., money is a constant problem for me, and your book is extremely helpful. I apologize for taking so long to contact you, but I had trouble tracking you down! Anyway, I just wanted to thank you very much, not only for the incredibly helpful book, but also for your insightful and inspirational words. I do hope to hear you speak again sometime soon. Once again, thank you very much and all the best! Regards, Chelsea G Susan, thanks for being there. I taught high school for 15 years and even wrote a school-wide lesson plan on communication theory for Crenshaw Senior High School here in LA, so it was a pleasure to speak with someone who really was present and communicated. You repeated the questions posed to you for everyone to hear and answered each one from an authentic place in your experience. I can't tell you how refreshing that was. Thank again, Jonathan Wolf www.moonlitimages.com I also wanted to thank you sincerely for all that you do to inspire and help give guidance to all in this industry. After just coming off a primetime TV show (did the graphics coordinating on CBS's Three Rivers)... your great truthful attitude stands out and shines brightly. Dawn Meyers
