Appendix 1: about the courses The following is a brief description of the course clusters to give you some idea of the career possibilities available to you.

The design & technical cluster Computer Literacy & Design, Creative Design, Fashion Photography, Garment Construction, Make-Up, Pattern Design, Technical Drawing, Visual Studies, Styling & Visual Merchandising. The Creative Design course introduces you to the concepts and design development skills related to fashion, with continual reference to production methods, identity and market trends. The Visual Studies course identifies and develops those areas of skill in the visual arts that relate to fashion design and design presentation. By developing graphic techniques in Computer Literacy & Design, students will be able to communicate their design in digital formats, including computer assisted design formats (CAD). The technical courses (Pattern Design, Garment Construction and Technical Drawing) develop an understanding of the relationship between design and manufacture. You’ll explore the progressive stages involved in the manufacturing process and the influence of these processes on design decisions, and develop a thorough understanding of all the technical (and technological) requirements of clothing production. This course cluster includes Make-Up and Fashion Photography courses, for those who are interested in the many exciting career options available to graduates in Media, Styling, Advertising, Journalism, Film and Television. The Styling course will enable students to develop a sense of styling fashion with appropriate clothing to suit different figure types. They are coached in a range of practical exercises to explore, discuss and critically reflect on the principles of shape, proportion and combinations. The course will expand students’ knowledge in fashion trends and resources as well as personal style.

The commercial cluster Buying & Merchandising, Business Studies & Management, Marketing & Brand Management, Merchandising Mathematics & Planning, Consumer Buying Behaviour, Project Management, Retail Management & Sales Training. These courses will provide you with the appropriate knowledge and skills to operate effectively in the business arena. This cluster of courses focuses on developing an understanding of the basic business environment, including the dominant structures and operational systems that characterise commercial fashion enterprises, and the context and nature of management practices in commercial fashion enterprises of different sizes. In addition, this cluster of courses applies buying, merchandising and marketing/ brand theory and practice to the fashion, retail and merchandising context. The basic principles and terminology of merchandising mathematics for retail management and merchandising contexts are also covered. The Sales Training course teaches the fundamentals of sales processes and techniques. It includes the development of people and product knowledge, sales terminology and interpersonal skills in the retail environment. Through case studies and role-play students will learn to create effective sales presentations for different audiences.

Contextual studies introduce skills, concepts and influences within both historical and contemporary contexts. These areas of study are vital to the creative and commercial practice of fashion and beauty, as they develop a critical awareness of contextual, historical and cultural narratives. The Experiential Learning course offers students first-hand experience of the world-of-fashion-work via an internship. This course allows students to interact with members of the industry, preparing them for the working environment.

Retail practice cluster The retail practice cluster of courses aims to equip the student with the skills for work in retail. Building on LISOF’s academic programmes, students’ theoretical learning is reinforced through practical application and experience. During the first six months of study, the programme includes retail-specific teaching, following which the students will spend six months in the field to gain retail experience and practically apply their learning before returning to the classroom for consolidation and further teaching.

The contextual cluster Experiential Learning, Fashion Media, Fashion Theory, Historical Fashion Studies, Fashion Practice, Textiles & Fashion, Trend Analysis. Successful fashion practices may be regarded as creative processes based on the collection, analysis, synthesis, consolidation, evaluation and presentation of a very diverse body of knowledge. The knowledge and skills developed through these courses have a significant bearing on your ability to engage successfully with a wide range of challenges in the field of fashion.

Appendix 2: ADMISSION GUIDELINES (Department of HIGHER Education & TRAINING)

These admission guidelines are extracted directly from the Minimum Admission Requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree Programmes requiring a National Senior Certificate, (Department of Education, Pretoria, August 2005) & the Minimum Admission Requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree Programmes requiring a National Certificate (Vocational) (Department of Education, Pretoria, March 2006, September 2007) Qualifications in Higher Education represent significant learning achievement, but all qualifications are not alike. They make different intellectual demands and reflect different intellectual achievements on an increasing scale of difficulty, and this is reflected in the different requirements for admission to the Higher Certificate, the Diploma and the Bachelor’s Degree, in terms of the National Senior Certificate and the National Certificate (Vocational). The minimum admission criteria for the various entry level qualifications in the Higher Education band (Higher Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree) must balance a number of important considerations and must reflect the cognitive demands that will be made on participating learners in the higher levels of the NQF. The setting of the admission requirements is made by Higher Education South Africa (HESA) in terms of section 74 of the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act No. 101 of 1997). HESA is the successor to the South African University Vice-Chancellors Association (SAUVCA) and the Committee of Technikon Principals (CTP). National statutory minimum admission requirements (minimum threshold norms) have been set in terms of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) at Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework – issued for the first time in 2008 for admission to Higher Education in 2009 and beyond – whose specifications were approved by the Minister of Education in the Policy for the National Senior Certificate: A Qualification at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (Government Gazette, Vol. 481, No. 27819, July 2005) for undergraduate Higher Education qualifications and programmes, namely the Higher Certificate (NQF Level 5), the Diploma qualification (NQF Level 6), and the Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7). National statutory minimum admission requirements (minimum threshold norms) have also been set in terms of the new National Certificate (Vocational) (NSV) at Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework – issued for the first time in 2009 for admission to Higher Education in 2010 – whose specifications were approved by the Minister of Education in the Policy for the National Certificate (Vocational): A Qualification at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (Government Gazette, Vol. 489, No. 28677, March 2006 and amended in Government Gazette, Volume 507, No. 30266, September 2007) for undergraduate Higher Education qualifications and programmes, namely the Higher Certificate (NQF Level 5), the Diploma qualification (NQF Level 6), and the Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7). The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) – or its academic precedents, e.g. Senior

Certificate without endorsement – as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 3 (moderate achievement, i.e. 40– 49%) or better, in four (of no fewer than six + Life Orientation) recognized NSC 20-credit subjects from the following list of subjects:
