DIRECTOR, LIBRARY SERVICES We are currently seeking a dynamic Director of Library Services in our Ontario (Toronto) office. Reporting to the General Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the direction, management, and operation of our Ontario library/information services team. The primary responsibilities of this position are: Operations and Resource Management 

Direct supervision of 4-6 staff including mentoring, coaching, training, career development, succession planning, as well as establishing and maintaining performance standards and evaluating staff



Promotion of Firm values, including a strong commitment to client service, diversity and high quality in work product



Supervise high-level reference work and legal research



Market library/information resources and services formally and informally



Research, select, and provide access to print and electronic information resources primarily in Toronto and Ottawa



Negotiate and monitor licensing and contractual commitments with publishers and vendors on a regional, national and global level



Establish policies, procedures and processes to effectively manage electronic resources and resolve operational challenges



Ensure a strong library presence on the Firm’s intranet

Information Services 

Ensure lawyers are kept current with new developments through the delivery of alerting services (e.g., media monitoring and current awareness routing)



Provide library training, guidance and support to the Firm’s students and legal professionals



Develop and monitor policies and procedures for locating and obtaining information materials



Manage library databases and provide input into the development of the Firm’s Sharepoint Intranet

Participate in Knowledge Management initiatives within the Firm

Administrative 

Develop strategic and business plans for the library that support the Firm’s goals and establish long and short term priorities for information and research resources



Establish effective business and financial management processes and exercise strong judgment in decision-making that balance business and strategic considerations



Collaborate on national budget with fellow library directors for national contracts and library services and prepare annual regional budget



Develop and maintain a portfolio of cost-effective, lawyer valued information services that are aligned with the strategic direction of the Firm and practice groups



Work as a team with other library directors, knowledge management, research lawyers and business services groups nationally and globally

Skills and Experience Required 

Master’s degree in Information Studies or combination of education and experience within law libraries and information science



Approximately 10 years of combined information services and management experience in a law library, ideally in the private sector



Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to lead while fostering a collaborative approach to decision making



Experience in Sharepoint Intranet design



Familiarity with legal library environments and management technologies



Proven record of client focused leadership, negotiation and strategic planning skills



Strong oral and written communication



Demonstrated ability to manage staff and budgets



Ability to synthesize information from various sources for use in operational and strategic planning



Creative and innovative thinker who seeks new or reinventing opportunities



Strong team player with experience in competitive and business intelligence
