• GUTTER CLEANING - Added Benefits: Although most people know gutters should be cleaned, it is easy for the task to slip your mind. While it may seem like no big deal, gutters full of debris can wreak havoc on many parts of your home. If water isn’t able to flow through your gutters, especially during the winter months, water can backup and freeze. This can cause ice dams on your roof, causing a leak or even allow water to reach your home’s foundation, causing major foundation issues. Clogged gutters are an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos, as well. • LAWN FERTILIZING - Added Benefits: Having a lush, healthy lawn is a great way to add curb appeal to your home, and if you are in the market to sell in the near future, this aspect will make the process that much easier. Aside from being easy on the eyes, having a beautiful lawn can help with other issues around the yard. A thick lawn can make standing water around the house disappear because the roots have the ability to absorb more water, as well as protect your pricey investment if turf was recently installed in your yard. • WINDOW CLEANING • POWER WASHING - Added Benefits: Power washing your home may not seem beneficial to the longevity of your residence, but regular pressure washing may save you from costly repairs in the future. Power washing has the potential to prevent decay and rot on your home and even protect your family from dangerous impurities, such as mold and algae. Adding to the benefits of the service is increasing the value of your home - a pressure washed house has the potential to add up to $15,000 to the sale price of your home, according to the National Association of Realtors. • SPIDER-WASP SPRAY - Why Treat? Unfortunately, along with warm Michigan summers come bugs of all kinds, including the ones everyone dreads, spiders and wasps. With a spider-wasp spray, you can protect the entire exterior of your home from the creepy insects, giving you the freedom to take back your yard and enjoy the warm summer sun without fear of getting bit or stung. • YARD CLEANUP • FLEA / TICK PREVENTATIVE - Why Treat? Whether or not you have pets that go outside in your yard, fleas and ticks can be a real headache for a homeowner. Ticks and fleas feed on both humans and pets. Fleas can cause an allergic reaction in just one bite and are very itchy, while ticks burrow in warm areas and can cause serious health diseases, such as Lyme disease. The preventative spray can greatly reduce the amount of fleas and ticks in your yard, giving you peace of mind while outside. • TREE / SHRUB TRIMMING - Added Benefits: Depending on the type of tree or shrub determines how often it should be trimmed. While some people don’t think trees or shrubs need to be trimmed, the truth is if you desire a certain shape or height, it is essential to groom them regularly to ensure they

look the way you want. Regular trimming also brings another level of curb appeal, giving your home a neat, tidy look. • MOSQUITOES - Why Treat? Nothing can ruin a warm summer day faster than swarming mosquitoes buzzing in your ear. Not only are they annoying, they are potentially dangerous with the possibility of transporting diseases. If you have an upcoming party or gathering that will be outside, treating for mosquitoes can bring you peace in your outdoor oasis. • HONEY BEES - Why Treat? While honey bees are not typically aggressive, they can still cause issues on a home. Honey bees will normally nest on the side of a building that receives the most sunshine, and if possible will enter the homes through a small opening. They will then begin to nest in the wall voids, which can cause many issues. It is not enough to kill off the nest, the honey must be removed and the area needs to be sealed to ensure another nest does not form in the area. ADDITIONAL SPRING SUGGESTIONS » Air Conditioning - Cleaning and getting your AC unit serviced will ensure your air conditioner is working properly and is debris free. It is often recommended to clean it twice a year, once before summer and once before winter. This routine maintenance could also help you avoid costly repairs in the future. » House Painting - Staying up to date on painting the exterior of your home not only makes it look better, it also increases its worth by boosting the curb appeal. It also helps your home last longer by protecting the material the structure is made of. » Roofing - Making sure your roof is in good condition is very important to ensure the condition of your attic and ceilings remain in good shape. If there is a leak in your roof or shingles are missing, water can leak down into your attic and cause thousands of dollars in damage. » Lawn Mower Service - When spring comes around, it is time to start thinking about getting your lawn equipment serviced to ensure it will run all season long. Getting your machines fine tuned will save you the frustration of your lawn mower or weed whacker from breaking down in the middle of summer. » Window / Screen Repair / Doors » Test Smoke Detectors - It is important to test your smoke detec-

tors regularly to ensure they are in working condition in case of an emergency. » Sump Pumps - Sump pumps are important if you wish to keep your basement free of water. Sump pumps are made to pump water underground near your foundation back outside, but if your sump pump is not working, that water will eventually make its way into your basement, resulting in costly repairs. » Walkway / Stair Repair - After a long winter of freezing weather, the water able to get under your sidewalk or driveway can wreak havoc on your concrete. When the water freezes and thaws, it can cause the concrete to heave or sink, making the area unsafe - if this happens, it is best to get the concrete repaired. » Fire Extinguishers - It is important to inspect your fire extinguisher to make sure it is ready for use. Fire extinguishers should last between 5 and 15 years, but other issues can shorten that time. It is important to ensure the needle gauge is in the green area. If not, it should be replaced. You should also make sure the hose isn’t cracked, the locking pin is in place and the handle is solid. » Gutter Repair - Having a good working gutter system on your home does much more than collect rain water. It makes sure water does not sit near your foundation, which could cause foundation leaks. It also keeps water off of wood decks and driveways/patios, alleviating the possibility of them settling. » Sprinkler Repair - Sprinkler systems often require repairs because dirt and debris can be clogged in the sprinkler line, which obstructs the water trying to escape. Irrigation lines underground can also become weak after years underground and may eventually break. 6601 Burroughs Ave. Sterling Heights, MI 48314 Toll FREE 1.855.HOT.WAXX www.sterlingwax.com

» Home Cleaning » Landscaping - Landscaping is an effective way to give the exterior of your home a facelift. Not only will this make your home look more esthetically pleasing, it will also increase the value of your home. » Range Hood Filter - Keeping your vent hood clean is an efficient way to ensure the people in the building are safe from a fire. The hood vent is designed to collect grease, smoke and grime, which is very flammable and should be removed regularly. » Water Heater Flush » Basement / Crawl Space Leaks » Sidewalk / Driveways (cement, asphalt, gravel) » Plantings (annuals, perennials, shrubs) » Mulch » Trees » Siding - Although siding is designed to be low maintenance and last a long time, severe weather or flying debris can damage your home’s exterior. It is important to repair the holes or cracks in your siding to ensure moisture or insects are not able to enter your home through the damaged area. » Deck Maintenance - Your wooden deck takes an immense beating between the hot sun during the summer and the snow during the winter. This can often cause the paint or stain to crack and peel, which means it is time to repaint or re-stain it. Staying on top of deck maintenance will greatly extend the life of your deck. » Exterior Storage

» Prune Shrubs / Trees - If you have trees and shrubs planted around your home, it is important to stay on top of trimming them if you desire a particular shape. If shrubs go untrimmed, they will often grow tall and scraggly, instead of full and beautiful. » Water Heater - Various sediments, such as dirt and other minerals, make their way into your hot water tank when water is pumped into it. This can greatly decrease the efficiency of the unit, which will cost you more money. Flushing your hot water tank is a great way to remove the dirt and debris and make sure your hot water tank is running smoothly. 1. Turn off the electrical or gas on the water heater. 2. Turn off water from the inlet valve, which supplies water to the tank. 3. Attach a hose to the valve on the bottom of the tank, which will be the drain valve. Run the hose outside or into a bucket. (Be aware the water coming out will be VERY HOT!) 4. Turn on the tank’s pressure-release valve or turn on a warm water faucet inside the house. 5. If flushing sediment, open the water heater's drain valve and let about 4 gallons drain. 6. Close the drain valve, turn the water back on to supply the tank and allow the tank to fill back up with water, then turn the electrical / gas supply back on. » Tree Removal - Unfortunately, sometimes trees in your yard die or grow into structures and cause damage to foundations or power lines. When this happens, you could trim it if the situation isn’t too severe, but other times the tree has to be completely removed to make sure the damage to your home or property isn’t continued. » Pool Opening / Chemicals - In order to get your pool ready for summer, you must first clean all the debris that has fallen into the water throughout the fall and winter. You must ensure your system is

• PORTABLE RENTALS - See ad on next page, 27 • YELLOWJACKETS / BALDFACE HORNETS - Why Treat? While having stinging insects around your home during the summer months causes enough problems, baldface hornets also bring an element of pain to the situation. Bald face hornets are the most painful stinging insect in the United States, as well as the most aggressive. If yellow jackets find an opening on your home, they will proceed to nest in your wall voids and can even eat through drywall to get inside your home. • MOUSE PREVENTATIVE – Important for Summer, Fall & Winter - Why Treat? Although mice appear to be harmless, they can easily cost you thousands of dollars repairing the damage. Mice are known to chew through electrical wires and anything else that they are confronted with. Like bats, mice can also ruin insulation in your attic and fit through the smallest of holes. Mice also carry many diseases that are dangerous to you and your family.

FALL • CHIMNEY SWEEPING - Why Clean? A fireplace that burns wood is a great way to warm your house during the cold winter months. Unfortunately, it can also be a dangerous addition to your home if it is not properly maintained. Creosote builds up in chimneys and if it isn’t cleaned regularly, it can close the opening of your chimney and cause a fire in your home. Even if a chimney isn’t used regularly, it is a good idea to get it inspected and cleaned to avoid unpleasant smells from sneaking into your house. • MOUSE PREVENTATIVE – Important for Summer, Fall & Winter - See pg. 26 for more information. • BOX ELDER BUGS / ASIAN LADY BEETLES - Why Treat? Asian lady beetles are known to overwinter in your home, which can cause issues with allergies and make a mess. They also emit a terrible odor and can stain items in your home with a yellowish tint. Box elder bugs are a nuisance, but they are not known to cause any damage to your home; however, they have the ability to deform trees and shrubs. • CARPET CLEANING - Why Treat? After a year of mud and dirt being tracked through your house, cleaning your carpet is a great way to revitalize the beauty inside your home. • FIREWOOD - Quality: Fireplace and stove wood shall be advertised, offered for sale, and sold only by measure, using the term “cord” and fractional parts of a cord or the cubic meter. - Prohibited Term: The terms “face cord,” “pile” “truckload” or terms of similar import shall not be used when advertising, offering for sale, or selling wood for use as fuel. • GRUB CONTROL - Why Treat? If you strive for a beautiful, lush lawn, grubs can undo all your hard work. Grubs feed on roots, which often tend to be the roots of your turf. One way to tell if you have an infestation is if your lawn or garden turns purple near the bottom of the stalk and begin to die off. • DRYER CLEANING - Why? Dry lint can quickly build up, which poses a serious risk to your home. While most of the lint is collected in the lint trap on your dryer, some makes its way into the exhaust pipe and begins to build up. This lint is extremely flammable and should be cleaned yearly to ensure your family’s safety.

It is a good time to take your machine in for a tune up to ensure it runs all winter long. This is also a great time to winterize your tractor if it’s not used during the winter by emptying the gas and removing the battery. » Furnace Inspection - It is a good idea to have your furnace inspected before it is needed during the cold winter months, as well as replacing the furnace filter to make sure it is running efficiently. » Insulation - Make sure your attic is properly equipped with enough insulation in adequate thickness to keep your heating bills low during the cold months. » Pool Winterizing - Readying your pool for winter is the most efficient way to ensure your pool will be in the same working condition as it was when you closed it. If the pool is not winterized, the water can stain the pool or form algae, which will create more work when it is time to open your pool again. » Drain Sprinkler Systems » Insulate Outdoor Pipes » Door / Window Repair (Weather Stripping / Screens) - Having weather stripping around your doors and windows is essential if you want to keep warm air inside your home during the winter, as well as keeping the hot weather out during the summer. If your weather stripping is damaged, air can flow through this area, costing you more in heating and cooling costs.

WINTER • CARPENTER ANTS - Why Treat? With your home being one of the biggest investments of your life, you want to ensure its longevity. Carpenter ants can destroy your house by attacking the wood structure. While carpenter ants do not eat the wood like termites do, they do chew up the wood in order to extend their nests and can greatly decrease the value of your home, not to mention compromise the strength of your structure.

• EXTERIOR MOUSE PREVENTATIVE – Important for Summer, Fall & Winter - See pg. 26 for more information. • BED BUGS - Why Treat? Despite what many people think, bed bugs have nothing to do with cleanliness because of the fact that they are hitchhikers. It only takes one bedbug to infest a house and they multiply constantly; once they are in the home, it is a long slow process to rid the residence of the pests. Bed bugs could be around for a while before they are noticed because they are so small. It is best to start treatment as soon as they are discovered because the problem will only worsen. Although their name suggests otherwise, bed bugs are found all over the house, including electrical outlets, books and furniture, not just beds. Bed bugs need blood to survive and typically find this in humans, although many don’t realize they are even being bit until the areas begin to itch. • SKUNKS - Why Treat? Skunks around your house, especially if you have outdoor pets, can turn your life upside down if they cross paths. Most people know someone whose pet was sprayed by a skunk and the smell is unbearable and nearly impossible to remove. When faced with this situation, it is best to have a professional company trap and relocate the animal. • SEPTIC - Why Treat? Pumping your septic tank regularly is a way to protect your septic field. It is also a smart investment that could save you from extremely costly repairs in the future. Not only can a full tank begin to back up into your house, causing a foul odor, it can also cause damage to the tank and field, which can cause tens of thousands of dollars to repair. It is recommended to have your septic tank pumped and inspected every two years to ensure your system is performing as it should. ADDITIONAL WINTER SUGGESTIONS » Furnace Filters » Winterize Vehicle (Tires, Coolant, etc.) - Making sure your car is ready before winter is here is a great idea to avoid being stranded on the side of the road in terrible weather. Replacing tires, making sure your coolant is flushed and washer fluid is full are a good place to start. » Salt - Keep on hand. » Snow Removal - Keep a company name and number on hand. » Christmas Lights Installation / Removal » Plumbers and Water Removal - Keep a company name and number on hand. » Washing Machine Supply Hoses - Should be replaced every two years.

CLOGGED GUTTERS?

Clogged downspouts and gutters cause water to overflow the gutter, which can damage fascia or soffit boards, erode landscaping, or cause a roof leak, which in turn may create additional exterior or interior damage, such as foundation failure. Fixing these problems can cost you thousands of dollars. Clogged gutters are also the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE TIPS • TIRES -Rotate tires every 5,000 miles to ensure equal wear on all your tires. (Recommended twice a year) - It is a good idea to check the pressure in your tires at least once a week. Low tire pressure will make them wear down faster, as well as affect your fuel economy. - Be sure to periodically check the tread on your tires to ensure the wear is even and there is enough tread left to make them safe to drive on. Most tires have wear bars in them to remind you it is time for new tires. • UNDER THE HOOD BELTS: The belts under your hood are mostly made of rubber, which break down faster under the hot conditions near the engine. It is a good idea to check all your belts every 25,000 miles to make sure they are not frayed or cracked. CHECK OIL: Park on level ground and let engine cool. Pull out dipstick and wipe clean; put dipstick back in and wait a minute. Pull back out and read oil level. If too low, add some oil. (Be sure not to overfill oil; it can damage the engine.) COOLANT LEVEL: Make sure the engine is cool before checking; coolants are under a lot of pressure when hot and can burn you. Located in a semi-clear white bottle (see owner’s manual), check to see if the fluid is between the high and low marks. AIR FILTER: Air filters should be changed once a year or every 12,000 miles. 32 St. Clair County Directory – Seasonal Tips, Discounts & Coupons

• ELECTRICAL - Disconnecting the Battery: Whenever you disconnect the battery, be sure to disconnect the negative first to make sure an electrical short doesn’t occur. When reconnecting, connect the positive first. - Battery Terminals: Check battery terminals periodically to make sure they are clean. - Blinkers and Headlights: When replacing a blinker or headlight, be sure not to touch the bulb with your bare hands because the oils will cause the area to heat up faster and eventually crack. • GET YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER When winter starts approaching, it is a good idea to start putting some equipment in your car to ready yourself in case of an emergency: - Jumper Cables - Kitty Litter (for traction) - Blanket - Emergency Triangle (or a rag to - Hats hang on antenna or mirror) - Gloves - Window Scraper - Small Snow Shovel - Non-Perishable Foods
