Grey Towers was completed in 1886 by Gifford’s father, James Pinchot, a wealthy wallpaper merchant. Richard Morris Hunt, a leading architect of the era, designed the summer home to utilize both local materials and reflect the French heritage of the Pinchot family. For two decades the Pinchots and their children enjoyed numerous summers at Grey Towers entertaining guests for afternoon teas and dinner parties. For our trip, the group will travel in a County Park 15-passenger van; seating is snug. It takes 1 hour 35 minutes to travel to Grey Towers. Please dress in layers; be prepared to be outdoors and indoors and wear smart footwear. The van departs from the County Arboretum (1020 Route 31 North) at 8:00 am. We will join a guided tour of the three stories of Grey Towers at 10:00 am (there is an $8 entry fee to be paid by participants). Then you will have free time to check out the gardens before we go for lunch at the Waterwheel Café in Milford PA (lunch is not included in the price of the trip; visit www.waterwheelcafe.com to view the menu). HISTORY THROUGH AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY NEW JERSEY FROM ABOVE Friday, February 21, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, Arboretum, Teens and Adults, $3 In 1930 New Jersey was a garden state. Aerial photography from that time depicts a grayscale checkerboard of farm fields, orchards, forests, and small towns. How it has changed! The state’s once expansive network of railroads disappeared and has been replaced with county routes, state highways, and interstates. Single lane steel truss or stone bridges have been replaced with concrete highway spans. Farms, old well houses, limestone kilns, and forests are now houses, malls, and asphalt. Explore the history of not-that-long-ago with Mike McCann, whose twenty years researching the state’s aerial photo library for the Department of Environmental Protection bring to life lost industries, amusement parks, canals, and bridges, with a liberal dose of Jerseyana. THERE USED TO BE A RAILROAD Friday, March 21, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, Arboretum, Teens and Adults, $3 New Jersey and railroads go way back, all the way to 1815 when the state granted John Stevens of Hoboken the first railroad charter in the U.S. Although Stevens’s New Jersey Railroad was never constructed, the Camden & Amboy Railroad, under the direction of Stevens’s sons, began service between South Amboy and Bordentown in 1833, the first of many railroads to lay track across the Garden State. In There Used to be a Railroad, Mike McCann reaches into his twenty years’ experience researching the Department of Environmental Protection’s aerial photo library to provide a glimpse of a New Jersey long gone—one in which you could get practically anywhere by rail. HUNTERDON FROM ABOVE Friday, April 11, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, Arboretum, Teens and Adults, $3 This presentation highlights the changing landscape of Hunterdon County from 1930 to the present using comparative interpretation of images from the aerial photograph library of New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Retired from the NJDEP’S Green Acres Program, presenter Mike McCann’s job was researching the history of land being considered for purchase by the state. He spent numerous hours examining aerial photography under a microscope, researching records and maps, and interviewing long-time residents. Mike is eager to share his extensive knowledge. The striking visuals and intriguing narration of the slideshow highlight the transition from the farm fields, orchards, forest, railroads, and small towns of rural Hunterdon to the presentday environment of houses, strip malls, and roadways.
