ELATE MUCH THE BEST IN DELAWARE HANDICAP By Alicia Wincze Hughes t @BH_AHughes

F

irst and foremost, there was the eight-month layoff hanging over Elate's head—a freshening that was necessary but lengthy nonetheless. Then there was the 10-furlong distance she was being asked to travel in her first outing since November, a route of ground that doesn't suffer those who lack class or fitness kindly. In case there weren't enough challenges for the multiple grade 1 winner in the $750,000 Delaware Handicap (G2) July 14, add to that the presence of another top-level filly who had already slayed one dragon this year. The thing with exceptional horses, though, is even when legitimate excuses are at the ready, they render them all unnecessary. There was a point in the fall when Elate had many believing

her to be the best dirt filly in the country, a theory that came undone when she failed to fire in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) Nov. 3. In her first outing since that fourth-place effort, the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro served noticed that she remains a massive problem for her foes with when she galloped to a 3 1/4-length victory Saturday at Delaware Park. Elate's path to her 4-year-old debut got hindered in the winter when she was troubled by a splint bone issue that prompted trainer Bill Mott to back off on her conditioning. That the Hall of Fame conditioner felt confident enough to start the dark bay girl back against the likes of grade 1 winner Unbridled Mo—over a classic distance, no less—was a tip of the hand that Elate was showing him the same kind of form

that recorded victories in the Alabama Stakes (G1) and Beldame Stakes (G1) last year. "We felt like she was doing well, so we just decided to go ahead and get her started," Mott said. "We knew we had a quality filly, and we knew she was capable of winning a race like this if we had her right." Though she faltered as the betting favorite in the Distaff, Elate ran every bit like the 1-2 favorite she was in the Delaware Handicap. After racing in last early, as 127-1 longshot Proper Discretion went the opening quarter-mile in :24.21, Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider's homebred started to pick off rivals with an outside move down the backstretch and wrested control from the overmatched pacesetter heading into the far turn. ELATE MUCH THE BEST IN DELAWARE HANDICAP (continued from page 4) Sneaky Betty tried to make a run at the imposing filly and got within a half-length of Elate as the latter reached the mile mark in 1:38.83, but the 85-1 longshot was quickly dismissed to settle for place honors as Elate opened up handily in the stretch under Jose Ortiz. "The horse outside of me (Nikki My Darling) stumbled out of there and ... when I saw her rushing up, I took back," Ortiz said. "On the backside, I thought we were going slow, so I decided to make a move, and she did it. She's a big filly, so I wanted to

get her in her stride on the backside before we hit the turn. "Off an eight, almost nine-month layoff, Bill and everyone did great to get her ready." The Delaware surface already has a history of kickstarting Elate's best form. An impressive maiden winner first time out in November 2016, Elate went on to lose the first four starts of her 3-year-old campaign, including a worrisome outing in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1), where she was pulled up and vanned off when Ortiz thought she took a bad step. It was in the Light Hearted Stakes at Delaware in June last year where she snapped that losing skid and won by 5 1/2 lengths. She teased of greater things to come when she was beaten just a head by eventual divisional champion Abel Tasman in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) a month later. Now undefeated in two starts at Delaware, Elate covered the distance Saturday in 2:04.83 over a fast track. Sneaky Betty edged Teresa Z by a neck to hold for second, with Fuhriously Kissed fourth. "I thought it was a good performance," said Mott. "She went early, she held on well, and she did what she had to do. It looked like when she took over, she did it with authority and she finished up. Was she getting a little tired at the end? Well, she could have been, but she had a right to." Unbridled Mo, who defeated champion Unique Bella in the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) in April, came in fifth, with graded stakes winner Mopotism sixth. Nikki My Darling and Proper Discretion rounded out the order of finish in the eight-horse field. Out of the Distorted Humor mare Cheery, Elate improved her record to five wins from 11 starts, with $1,270,325 in earnings. She is expected to target the Aug. 25 Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course next. BH

change in tactics led to a change in fortunes for Slam Dunk Racing's Axelrod in the $500,000 Indiana Derby (G3) July 14. As others rushed for the early lead in the 1 1/16-mile test at Indiana Grand, jockey Florent Geroux—in his first start aboard the Warrior's Reward colt—took back, immediately got to the rail, and raced second to last in the nine-horse field as they entered the Axelrod (outside) gets past Trigger Warning at the wire to win the Indiana Derby first turn. Trigger Warning set the pace under pressure from Blame the Rider—with fractions of :23.65, :47.86, and 1:11.52 through six furlongs—then kicked away in the stretch to open a 2 1/2-length lead with a furlong to run. Angled out by Geroux in the stretch, Axelrod appeared to be in a battle for the minors with favored King Zachary, but he found another gear in the final sixteenth and just got up to win by a head over Trigger Warning in 1:43.00. "My horse broke sharp, but I was surprised there was a lot of speed and everybody went," Geroux said of the Michael McCarthy trainee. "I was like ... 'Let's go to the fence and try (to get) as much run as we can.' From there, he was off the bridle during the whole race, and when horses in front started coming back to him, his heart started getting bigger and bigger. "By the quarter pole, I didn't know if I was going to get the horse on the lead, but the final jump—he just kept on going." Although Axelrod has been on or near the lead in every race other than his debut on grass in July 2017—including a second-place finish in the Affirmed Stakes (G3) June 10 at Santa Anita Park—McCarthy wasn't shocked by the colt's early positioning in the Indiana Derby. "When I saw they were going quick up front tonight, I was happy to save ground on the fence," McCarthy said. "Then at the three-eighths pole, it didn't look like anyone was going anywhere. … In the Affirmed, the pace was a little on the soft side, so he was able to lay a little closer. JOHN ENGELHARDT

AXELROD SURGES LATE TO TAKE INDIANA DERBY (continued from page 8) "I wasn't surprised he was that far back, but the way he got to those horses from the three-eighths pole to the wire surprised me." Trigger Warning finished 1 1/2 lengths clear of Title Ready for second. They were followed by last-out Matt Winn Stakes (G3) winner King Zachary, Dark Vader,

Funny Duck, The Money Dance, Givemeaminit, and Blame the Rider. The Indiana Derby was Axelrod's first graded stakes victory and first win of 2018 in his first start outside of California, where McCarthy is based. Prior to the Affirmed, he finished third and fourth— beaten a head and half-length, respectively—in a pair of sprints over the Santa Anita hillside turf course. The $25,000 purchase out of the 2016 Ocala Breeders' Sales Winter Mixed Sale broke his maiden in for a $50,000 claiming tag in August at Del Mar and won a starter allowance to close his juvenile season at Santa Anita in October. He got an extended break after that, returned to racing in April, and McCarthy said the difference has been noticeable in 2018. "I couldn't be happier for the horse," the trainer said. "He's certainly turned the corner over the last 90 days. We gave him a little break over the winter, and he's paid us back in spades." Bred in Florida by Hidden Point Farm, out of the Elusive Quality mare Volatile Vickie, Axelrod has a 3-1-1 record from eight starts and $360,925 in earnings. BH

In the July 14 edition of the $200,000 Indiana Oaks (G3) at Indiana Grand, the daughter of Violence stopped hinting at her ability and made a clear-cut statement with regard to her upside. Talk Veuve to Me showed Saturday night why her trainer and co-owner Rodolphe Brisset has been anxious to stretch her out around two turns. GOLDEN BROWN UPSETS KENT STAKES FOR FIRST GRADED WIN By Meredith Daugherty t @BH_MDaugherty

I

ADRIANNA LYNCH/BLOODHORSE

n a wild, 1 1/8-mile trip over the Delaware Park turf, Golden Brown fired in the final lengths of the stretch to win the $200,000 Kent Stakes (G3T) and take home his first graded win. While the race started out well enough, it ended with a tumultuous stretch run, two objections for interference, and an upset. Breaking sharply from post 7 after he acted up in the gate, longshot Archaggelos shot to the front of the pack to set the pace. Pressing the leader from the outside, Golden Brown and Hot Springs battled for third as Way Early showed early speed in second. Archaggelos was still in the lead at the mile mark in 1:36.14, but the situation turned dicey as the field entered the stretch. Dropping back dramatically, Archaggelos veered toward the rail and carried Hot Springs into the path of Untamed Domain. After breaking last in the field of eight, Untamed Domain was first checked along the inside in the far

turn by jockey Jose Ortiz before he was pulled back again entering the lane. Cut off in close quarters by the maneuvers of Hot Springs, Ortiz was unable to improve the position of his mount, and the Patrick McBurneytrained Golden Brown seized an opening on the outside to win by 1 3/4 lengths. A stewards inquiry was immediately undertaken when two objections were lodged against Hot Springs and Archaggelos by Ortiz, citing interference in the stretch. Official results were delayed more than 10 minutes before Archaggelos was disqualified from fourth to sixth. The objection against Hot Springs was dismissed and he held for second, followed by Carrick a halflength behind in third. "After his first time on turf, where he ran a fantastic race against tough older horses, we were looking for a straight 3-year-old race," McBurney said. "This was a grade 3, but we thought we would take a shot. We looked at the numbers, and his stacked up within a couple points of the highest number. We thought he would improve, and he could only help himself by running 1-2-3 in a race like this." The Kent was the first step up to graded company for the 3-year-old son of Offlee Wild who finished second last time out in the Dan Horn Handicap at Monmouth Park. Bred in New Jersey by Esther de Jong and owned by ABL Stable, D. Bossone, P. Donnelly, and J. Schnoor Jr., Golden Brown was purchased by McBurney, agent, for $22,000 from the FasigTipton Fall Yearling Sale. He improved his record to 3-3-0 in seven starts, with earnings of $209,500. I was not going to take the "Pablo loves him as much as I do, so I was just ecstatic race away from him the way he broke. The fractions that he would come ride him, and I didn't even expect showed like he was going a little fast, but I swear it to be on the lead. I thought a horse named Wallace felt like I was floating. (formerly trained by Connelly) would be there, so it's "I honestly had a lot of confidence in this horse. I all Pablo. I let him call the shots." U S NAVY FLAG EYES THE EVEREST AFTER JULY CUP TRIUMPH By Bruce Jackson/Racing Post

U

S Navy Flag carved himself a niche in racing history when he captured the July 14 Darley July Cup (G1), completing a Newmarket group 1 triple that includes his victories in last year's Juddmonte Middle Park and Darley Dewhurst Stakes. That tells only half the story as his trainer, Aidan O'Brien, conqueror of most of the peaks in Europe, is looking to scale The Everest, the fabulously rich sprint at Randwick in Australia in October, with this "amazing horse.”

The astonishment was that the 3-year-old managed to shake off three attempts this year to convert him into a group 1-winning miler, when he would not back down but had come up short. "He's unbelievable," said O'Brien of his fourth July Cup winner but the first since Australian import Starspangledbanner eight years ago. "What threw us was that he was able to win a Dewhurst, after setting a strong pace, and he nearly won an Irish Guineas, probably the toughest mile any horse can run. "He was absolutely out on his head in the final furlong but still kept trying, so he's an unbelievable little horse to be doing that." To use an athletics analogy, it was like Usain Bolt back over 100 meters having been beaten up by Mo Farah over 1,500 meters. Clearly holding no grudge against his trainer, U S Navy Flag unfurled his banner from the stalls, with Ryan Moore allowing him to charge down the middle of the course straight as a gun barrel. Last year's third, Brando, reshod after losing a shoe on the way to the start, came with a strong challenge but was shaken off by a length and three-quarters. The winner's stablemate Fleet Review was third at 50-1. There was wonderment at U S Navy Flag's reemergence as a group 1 winner, but he was following something of a blueprint for success in this sixfurlong sprint. The 1980s were littered with 3-year-olds who rediscovered their mojo after brave attempts at becoming milers—remember Chief Singer, Green Desert, and Ajdal—and more recently came O'Brien's 2001 winner Mozart and in 2011 Dream Ahead. The story of the race is simply told as U S Navy Flag led the majority of the field down the middle of the track, with Eqtidaar and Redkirk Warrior trying to match him among a quartet on the stands' rail only to fall away. U S NAVY FLAG EYES THE EVEREST AFTER JULY CUP TRIUMPH (continued from page 16) Moore, winning his first July Cup, said: "The second came to me and probably got to a neck, but he dug in— he's a very straightforward horse." O'Brien added: "He doesn't need tactics. He's aggressive and wants to go forward, and if anything wants to take him on, they'll have to be going hard." It is likely to be the Australian sprinters who will find that out in The Everest over six furlongs Oct. 13, and that race being run around a bend holds no fears for connections.

Moore added: "What's important to him is the ground, today's ground." O'Brien, so far thwarted in his attempts to conquer the early summer American classic scene, is looking forward to this new challenge. "Australian racing is very strong and competitive, so it's great that we can race through the first half of the year in this country and then go down in the winter for the second half of their season," said the Ballydoyle trainer. As to U S Navy Flag's preparation, O'Brien added: "He'll probably have a little rest now. He's had a tough time, then we'll train him for The Everest."
