WELCOME TO KINGSTON ARTISTS OPEN STUDIOS 2018 The Open Studios event in Kingston has gone from strength to strength over the past eight years since it began. This year we have 80 artists and makers showing a range of 3D and 2D work in 19 different venues across Kingston. This is a perfect opportunity for you to meet local artists, see their work and discover the techniques they use and the passions that inspire them. Open Studios is a nationwide scheme, created to support the work of artists within the local community. The aim is to promote accessibility to art and artists. Visits are free of charge and artists are happy to talk about their creative process. Works of art are for sale but there is no obligation to buy, the focus is on enjoying your visit. The event will take place over two weekends: 9-10 and 16-17 June, between 11am and 5pm
Kingston Artists Open Studios (KAOS) is an unfunded, voluntary group set up and run by local artists to promote the visual arts in the borough of Kingston. Established in 2010 we are open to artists, sculptors, ceramicists, printmakers, photographers and other crafts people living or working in or around Kingston. With the aim of raising the profile of art in the community, supporting each other and selling our work, KAOS has already made a mark on the visual arts scene in Kingston, with almost 30 exhibitions since we started. As the name suggests our main event is the annual Open Studios, but we also hold regular group exhibitions, which in 2017 included Visually Literate at the Fitzrovia Gallery W1, a collaboration between KAOS Artists and the creative writing group at the King Charles Centre Surbiton. In January this year the collaboration continued with Visually Literate 2 and a fresh collection of artworks, the inspiration for new stories and poems.
SPONSORED BY CASS ART, KINGSTON Young KAOS is an art competition open to young artists between the ages of 16 and 19 living in the Kingston area. Congratulations to our 2018 winners FIRST

Meriem Bennani – Siham & Hafida 16 May – 14 July 2018 Meriem Bennani presents a newly reconfigured version of the video installation Siham & Hafida (2017) originally commissioned by The Kitchen, New York City. The work offers an intimate view into the lives of two women whose intergenerational conflicts over the chikha tradition – part of the Aita music heritage – reflect greater shifts in Moroccan culture. Historically, chikha performers have provided entertainment for important celebrations and spread lyrics of resistance during the era of French colonization. Yet tensions have arisen as performers negotiate a globalised society. 48 Meriem Bennani, Siham and Hafida (2017)
