The Goal Morvargh Sailing Project Helen Mary R Demographic Environment & Technology Tall Ships Races A Young Person’s Perspective Sponsorship Return on Investment Events Media and PR Opportunities The Benefits of Sponsorship Contacts

The Goal In 2013 we discovered that our Tall Ship, Helen Mary R needed her rigging replaced. We didn’t have the reserves in place to pay for the standing rigging so operations had to be suspended and fundraising started.

The past two years have seen successful rounds of fundraising and many repairs, replacements, and renovations to Helen Mary R and our final goal is to create strategic partnerships and secure sponsors. We have exciting ideas on how we would like to move forward and will be able to offer sponsors the opportunity to capitalise on three major campaigns; the Round Britain Challenge, The Tall Ships Race 2017, and Mayflower 400.

Together, we can build and inspire a new generation.

Using Sail Training to Inspire and Change Lives Mórvargh Sailing Project was incorporated as a Community Interest Company in January 2010. Since then we have taken many young people sailing on our Tall Ship, Helen Mary R. We use offshore sailing because it is an unforgiving natural environment that provides a sense of risk and adventure. Helen Mary R is a natural extension to this, she requires hard physical work and cannot be sailed without teamwork, both on deck and down below. Most people come to us with little or no sailing experience but nearly all find it a life changing experience.

Demographic Sail training and the Tall Ships races have a broad demographic, it caters for a large range of interests, abilities and aspirations. We take young people aged 14+ on our voyages and also provide around 20 adult sailing days each year. Young people are referred to us by Schools, Youth Offending teams, Social Services and other youth groups such as the Scouts & Sea Cadets. Morvargh Sailing Project is about teaching young people the importance of teamwork, communication, social responsibility and the environment along with improving academic performance; all this set against the stunning backdrop and adventure of sailing in the South West of England, France and other European ports. Our adult voyages see around 300 people sailing with us; along with visiting wider Plymouth & Sutton harbour attractions before & after.

4

Technology and the Environment Young people sailing with us write about their adventures during their voyage on our website based Ship’s log, pictures they’ve taken and a GPS track/map of where we’ve sailed that day are also uploaded. Families, friends and the public can interact with or share this page. It is automatically shared to our social media pages when posted. We primarily use Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram social media networks. Mórvargh’s Klout score is 54, this score puts us in the top 20% of social media users globally. The environment is important to us; we work in partnership with the National Marine Aquarium to deliver an innovative STEM workshop for schools & are a recommended boat operator for the Sea Watch Foundation.

The Tall Ships Races With more than eight thousand participants and over five million public visitors, The Tall Ships Race in Northern Europe was not only the world’s largest annual international sailing event for young people, but also had the largest public attendance of any sports event or exhibition in the world. The 2009 Northern Europe Tall Ships Race statistics are shown below: 

5.5 million spectators, 8,000 participants from over 50 countries.

Value of TV/Radio/Press coverage = £1.5 million!

More than 500,000 website visitors during the event.

We plan on entering a number of Tall Ships festivals when we re-launch and will take part in the Small Ships race in the Solent.

A young persons perspective Having grown up in Plymouth, I have always loved the sea. I have spent a lot of my childhood rock pooling and swimming and was a member of the national marine aquarium for several years. As long as I can remember others have commented on my shyness/quietness and whilst it bothered me, I thought that it was just the way I was so didn’t seek to work on my confidence. When I was 14 I was offered a place on a school trip with Mórvargh sailing project. I was initially unsure as to whether I would like to go, as it was a whole week away and I only briefly knew the others on the trip. I tried to justify my passing up on such and opportunity with silly worries like ‘What if I get sea sick?’ and ‘What if they don’t have vegetarian food?’ But, after a bit of convincing and the thought: ‘What if I love it?’ I decided to go for it, and I am so glad that I did. I have since participated in twelve or so week-long voyages around the Devon coastline. In addition, I became a watch leader; this required me to take responsibility for teaching groups of young people whilst on trips including during a three-week long voyage to France with students from Plymouth University (who were at the time a few years older than me). This opportunity allowed me to develop leadership skills and confidence alongside learning to become a more competent sailor.

I no longer feel defined by my shyness or quietness. Since Mórvargh offered me such fantastic experiences and opportunities with their project, it has given me the confidence to have faith in what I can achieve. Last year I completed two scuba diving courses and this year I have applied to do a Marine Biology and Oceanography course at Plymouth University. (which she started this Sept.) I truly believe that if I didn’t have the experiences I did with Mórvargh, I may never have pursued these interests that have put me on the path to do what I love. I will always be grateful to Mórvargh for that and hope that I am still able to be a part of the inspirational work that Mórvargh do and encourage others like me to realise their potential.

Sponsorship Sailing has a clean and positive image, and for those of us who go offshore, a sense of adventure and endurance, which makes it a great fit for many companies who aspire to these values. There is much more to sailing sponsorship than just visible branding and media returns. Unlike Formula 1 or football, sailing sponsorship gives a sponsor’s key clients a chance to meet the skipper, their skipper, and to go sailing on the boat (not something you do with an F1 car or a box at the rugby). The relationships built between sponsor and client on-board during sailing days are very valuable, and strong bonds and trust are formed that lead to some great business deals. We are looking to engage with two key sponsors in an arrangement in the region of £5,000 per organisation. This will guarantee we get sailing and hold our launch party & 30th birthday rededication in 2016.

Working with you We’ve already worked with local companies such as Woollcombe Yonge & Cotton Frog on smaller events and Sutton Harbour were a major supporter in 2015. These relationships allow us to understand what organisations want to achieve from any sponsorship arrangement, however we feel it should be an organic arrangement that is worked and improved upon with clear targets and expectations. We are dedicated to providing you with a return on any investment you make and really want to engage with Partners to match what we can offer to your expectations so that you are happy throughout.

Climb on board We value the opportunity of working with & promoting your organisation and look forward to discussing sponsorship of Morvargh Sailing Project further. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information and I would like to thank you for your time. Matthew Barraud Project Director 07481 546577 [email protected]
