Havering College is an award winning centre for lifetime learning and training, offering a diverse range of qualifications from entry level to postgraduate degrees. Our mission is to deliver high quality education and training that responds to the needs of employers and individuals. To that end, we’re constantly working to deliver courses that are developed in conjunction with employers to ensure that you have the opportunity to develop the relevant skills required for your industry. We offer an excellent support system with an emphasis on teacher contact time and each course has been designed with progression in mind, flowing from one level to the next and

eventually leading into employment. Our campuses offer an impressive collection of facilities that are equipped with industry standard software and equipment. These facilities are accessible to all students and where possible, equipment can be hired out. FAQs Can I study a subject if I haven’t taken it at GCSE?

What happens if I don’t get the grades I need?

Even if you did not study a subject at GCSE level, you may still be eligible to enrol on a course if you can demonstrate a passion for the subject and or a portfolio of work.

If for whatever reason you don’t manage to secure the grades you need, we will be on hand to provide support and discuss your options.

Do I need English and maths? If you have not yet achieved a grade 4/C (or above) in GCSE English and Maths, you will be required to attend GCSE resit sessions (if you achieved grade 3/D) or functional skills sessions (if you achieved grade 2/E or below).

In most cases you can still study your chosen subject, but it may be at a lower level.

These qualifications are vital for those looking to eventually progress onto university.

What support is available? At Havering College, we are fully committed to providing inclusive education and have a well developed history of supporting students from different backgrounds, cultures and abilities. Support is available from your first contact with the college and continues throughout your programme of study.

How and when should I apply? We would encourage you to apply as soon as possible. You can request a form by emailing [email protected] or you can apply online at www.havering-college.ac.uk It’s worth noting that the course you put on your application does not have to be your final choice. If you change your mind later in the process, we can discuss other options. 4

Our fulltime courses for school leavers consists of: • A main vocational qualification • Enterprise hours/work experience (where appropriate) • Tutorial sessions • English (if you do not already hold a grade 4/C or above at GCSE) • Mathematics (if you do not already hold a grade 4/C or above at GCSE)

LEARNING SUPPORT If you have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), let us know. Viewing your plan can help us to better meet your specific needs. If you don’t have an EHCP, you can ask your local authority to carry out an assessment. A young person can request an assessment for themselves if they are aged 16-25. You can also refer yourself for addition classroom support via ProMonitor. This is separate to an EHCP and it’s specifically for those who don’t require an EHCP but feel as though they need additional support. If you would like to discuss your support needs in confidence, or require any further information, please contact a member of the Learning Support Service. STUDENT SERVICES Our team offer a variety of social and sporting activities, alongside a wide range of support, practical information, advice and guidance. During your induction week (1st week of college) you will be introduced to the services team and the facilities available to you. In addition to this, our welcome event gives you the opportunity to meet with students on other courses and find out more about the benefits of being a student.

Financial Support As a student on a fulltime course, you may be eligible for financial assistance towards the cost of travel and course related materials. The services team can sit with you and discuss the various options open to you and will assist with any queries you may have. The types of funding that may be available to you are as follows: • 16-19 Bursary Fund • Free college meals • The Discretionary Learner Support Fund Additional funding may be available depending on your circumstances. Please speak with a member of our services team for more information.

UCAS Applications When it comes time to submit UCAS applications, the team can work with you to write personal statements and provide advice and guidance throughout the process.

As a student you can apply for a NUS Extra Card and the Students’ Union Plus Card to receive discounts at various shops across the UK.

Sports Programme Our sports & healthy living team organise competitions, clubs and sporting activities for all students. Promoting activities like football, basketball, table tennis and yoga to ensure that there’s something for everyone. If there’s something you’d like to participate in that isn’t on our list, let the team know and they’d be happy to try and organise a new event/club.

Students’ Union The Students’ Union is a body of students elected by fellow students, to represent them whilst at college. The Students’ Union has an annual budget which is used to hold events, activities and trips. As a student you can apply for a NUS Extra Card and the Students’ Union plus Card to receive discounts at various shops across the UK.

StARs Student Academic Representatives The ‘Learner Voice’ is an important aspect of student life. As a student on one of our courses, you could represent your classmates and have a say in how the college could be improved. It’s a great opportunity to get involved and make a difference!

COLLEGE FACILITIES Learning Resource Centres - All Campuses Each campus boasts a modern Learning Resource Centre (LRC) that gives you the freedom to make the most of your study time, combining quality library facilities with hi-tech computers and multimedia equipment. We also provide individual and group study spaces for those that need a quiet space to work and read. Students can access all centres across the campuses, putting more than 80,000 items at your fingertips – including books, periodicals and DVDs.

All Campuses Each campus has a refectory serving a selection of meals, sandwiches and snacks with a Starbucks outlet at the Ardleigh Green Campus. The Jubilee Restaurant, based at our Quarles campus, is the showcase venue for our hospitality and professional cookery students. It is open to students, staff and the general public for lunch and fine dining experiences during term time.

Hi-SET STEM Hub - Ardleigh Green Campus In our commitment to developing science, technology, engineering and mathematics throughout the college, we have a Hi-Set STEM Hub that students can use to build their skills in these specific areas. Exciting workshops and events are regularly held here and it’s a great opportunity to participate in additional activities outside of your course. This centre encourages creative thinking and promotes innovation.

GCSE

A GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the benchmark for academic qualifications and is usually completed as part of your school years. English and Maths GCSEs can be re-taken at the college if you achieved a grade 3/D or below.

NVQ - National Vocational Qualifications

These awards are competence-based, job-related qualifications, designed to develop your skills and knowledge through work-based training and assessment. The Apprenticeship Framework includes NVQ qualifications.

Foundation Learning

A vocational programme of study for those aged 14-16, designed as an alternative to GCSEs. The qualifications are recognised by employers and relate to professional areas (such as construction).

Vocational Qualifications

Functional Skills

Equivalent to GCSE, these qualifications provide practical skills in English Language and mathematics designed to ensure that you reach the level of skill to support your vocational study. Functional skills enable progression and are essential for employment in all industries. Functional skills form a compulsory part of all courses at Level 2 & 3 for those who did not achieve a GCSE grade 3/D in English and/or Maths.

Practical courses with a strong career focus that sometimes include a work placement. Vocational courses include BTECs, NVQs and professional qualifications recognised by specific industries such as AAT, CIPD or CACHE.

ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages

Courses for those who have a limited understanding of English language and would like to develop their skills and potentially transition on to other courses. For young people and adults.

Access to Higher Education Level 3 Diploma

For adults who wish to progress to Higher Education but who don’t have the relevant qualifications in that subject area. They are also particularly useful for adults who may be returning to study after a long break. Successful completion enables you to apply for a relevant university degree course.

Foundation Degrees HNC & HND

Undergraduate qualifications equivalent to year 1 & 2 of a full degree. Combining academic and vocational studies, these are often work-based, designed with a particular career or vocation in mind.

BA, BSc or BEng. Degree

Bachelor of Arts, Science, or Engineering Degrees are undergraduate courses that usually take 3-5 years to complete.

Foundation Skills

Life and work skills for those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

BTEC Level 1, 2 or 3 Diplomas or Certificates

Vocational-based qualifications that focus more on the practical skills and knowledge of a particular vocational area. Qualifications achieved at BTEC Diploma Level 3 are equivalent to an A Level and attract UCAS tariff points, enabling progression on to Higher Education. The BTEC 90Credit Diploma is equivalent to an AS qualification.

Apprenticeships: Intermediate, Advanced & Higher

Apprenticeships are paid jobs with formal training. Ideal if you wish to combine a career with part-time study at college. The Apprenticeship Framework includes NVQ qualifications.

AS & A Level

Subject specific academic qualifications that provide a good foundation for university or higher level study.

APPRENTICESHIPS

What you will study An apprentice will study a group of qualifications called the Framework. This includes English, Maths, ICT (if you don’t have A*-C grades at GCSE) and an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) that reflects their Apprenticeship. These are based on National Occupational Standards that describe the ‘competencies’ expected in any given job role. For example, someone working in an administrative office role may undertake NVQ in Business & Administration. Advanced Apprenticeship qualifications may also attract UCAS points to enable progression on to higher level study.

Earn while you learn - the best of both worlds. An Apprenticeship is a real job in a working environment. It combines on the job training in the workplace with formal training, working towards a recognised qualification at college. Apprenticeships take between 1 and 4 years to complete and cover over 1,500 job roles in a wide range of industries such as engineering, finance, childcare, food production, hospitality, hairdressing, administration and construction. A typical apprenticeship programme would include 3 or 4 days at work and 1 or 2 days developing further skills in the workshops and classrooms at the college.

Apprenticeship vacancies The college operates an Apprenticeship matching service for employers, advertising vacancies and screening potential candidates. Apprenticeships are an approved alternative to full time education for 16-18 year olds. Employers value apprenticeships so you will have a good foundation to start from as well as make contacts in your industry.

A Traineeship is an employer led education and training programme with work experience that is focused on giving young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for. At its core is work preparation training, English and Maths (for those who need it), and a high quality work experience placement.

Traineeships are very flexible, employers work closely with a training provider such as ourselves to design programmes that reflect the needs of the organisation. At the end of the Traineeship, a young person will be offered a job interview if a role becomes available or exit interview and a reference from the company who have provided the work experience placement. Traineeships can be an excellent stepping stone to becoming an Apprentice. WORK EXPERIENCE

DID YOU KNOW? Prior to you going out on work experience all our placements are visited to ensure there is a safe working environment for you.

How does it work? Students will be encouraged to find their own placements. This will give you the experience of contacting businesses and the advantage of finding your ideal placement. (Note - students on Health & Social Care courses will have their placements provided by the college). Work experience placements can vary in length depending on the course of study. Offering meaningful work experience placements for our students puts them on the right track for their work journey. Work experience is not optional; all students will complete this element and it is just as important as the vocational course and any English and maths qualifications.
