Highly Commended in Division A Yass Valley Council Bookham Cemetery & Reserve Signs Illegal firewood collection at the Bookham Cemetery and Reserve threatens the endangered remnant of Box-Gum Woodland - an ecological community listed as endangered and critically-endangered under the NSW and Commonwealth legislation. Council have addressed this threat through raising awareness of the biodiversity values contained within the site and to alert visitors that firewood collection is damaging and prohibited. Highly Commended in Division B Greater Taree City Council Big Swamp, Big Plume, Big Results The Big Swamp project area in the Manning River catchment is recognised as one of the worst acid sulfate soil ‘hot spots’ on the NSW coast. The project area consists of 2000ha of coastal floodplain which had been extensively drained for agriculture. The project was initiated by Council after receiving a $2million grant from the Federal Government to implement comprehensive on ground works aimed at reducing the production and transport of acid runoff into the Manning River. Richmond Valley Council Fishers Way: Working with stakeholders to repair Jabour Weir Fishway The Fishers Way project is a partnership between Council, Fisheries NSW, the commercial mullet fishers from Ballina as well as the recreational fishers in the region. Each of these partners contributed to the repair of the fishway to facilitate fish passage. Since the repair of the fishway juvenile fish have been reported moving into upstream waters and reclaiming their former habitats. Eurobodalla Shire Council Re-introducing Burning to Themeda Grass Headland EEC’s (Endangered Ecological Community) Eurobodalla Shire Council implemented annual fire management on three Endangered Ecological Communities of Themeda Grasslands on local headlands to restore environmental integrity. Like much of Australia’s flora, the existence of Themeda Grassland is uniquely tied to Indigenous past practices. Working with the Indigenous community, Council sought advice from Indigenous elders about traditional management practices. Reinstating the fire regime has markedly reduced exotic annual grasses and invigorated native growth. Tom Dexter Environment and Sustainability Project Officer 02 4474 7491 [email protected]
