2014 NFLPA Coaching Internship
Please read the following information regarding the NFLPA Coaching Internship. All former NFL players interested in coaching are encouraged to apply. Background: The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) have partnered to provide an opportunity for former professional football players who want to gain valuable experience in the coaching profession. Since the establishment of the NFLPA Coaching Internship in 2006, many retired NFL players have transitioned from the program into full-time coaching positions and over 40 NCAA member institutions have been positively affected by participating. See below for a few former intern standouts and ambassadors for the program who have gone on to do great things in the coaching profession. Todd Washington, Class of ’06 - Assistant Offensive Line Coach, Baltimore Ravens Prior to his position at the Ravens, Todd completed his internship with East Texas Baptist University and went on to gain additional experience at the University of San Diego and the Hartford Colonials (UFL). Tyrone Wheatley, Class of ’08 - Running Backs Coach, Buffalo Bills After completing his internship with Ohio Northern, Tyrone went on to coach Running Backs at Eastern Michigan and Syracuse before arriving in Buffalo. Brandon Lynch, Class of ’10 – Co-Defensive Coordinator, University of Northern Iowa Shortly after completion of his internship with Wilmington College, Brandon was hired as the Secondary Coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University. After two successful years, he was given an opportunity at Northern Iowa. Brandon was also selected to attend the exclusive NFL-NCAA Coaching Academy in 2012. Paris Johnson, Class of ’13 – Graduate Assistant, Michigan State Paris took a leap of faith and left his career as police officer to become a coach. He did his internship with Central State University and subsequently joined the staff at Michigan State as a Graduate Assistant where he helped bring home the Rose Bowl championship trophy earlier this year.
Program Details: Former NFL players will be selected to serve as coaching interns at Division II, Division III, and NAIA institutions for an entire football season (including training camp). Applicants will be appointed to a Division II, Division III, or NAIA football program that best meets the interests and qualifications of the applicant and the needs and interests of the host institution. Geographic location will be considered when possible. Host institutions are responsible for (1) providing a positive, quality experience for the intern coach, (2) supplying intern with housing and meals from his initial report date through the end of training camp, and (3) completing an intern evaluation to be returned to the NFLPA at the end of the season. In the spirit of providing a consistent, quality experience, we strongly suggest that host institutions allow
externs to: o Facilitate a position meeting o Take the NCAA recruiting test or be exposed to recruiting o Handle academic issues or interact with university staff directly about player progress o Be involved with scheduling/planning practice o Lead drills in practice o Have input in game plans o Assist with opponents' film analysis o Execute game day responsibilities o Evaluate talent o Use PlayMaker, XOS, HUDL, DV Sport, Dragon Fly or similar programs o Diagram on the board to teach players and/or the other members of the coaching staff Coaching interns are expected to (1) arrive on the start date determined by the head coach, (2) remain with the host institution from start date through the entire season, (3) contribute to the football program in any way possible as determined by the head coach and the coaching staff, and (4) complete an evaluation to be returned to the NFLPA at the end of the season. Interns will be assigned by mid-July and are expected to contact the head coach to determine the start date. This is an unpaid opportunity; however, the NFLPA will provide a modest stipend to help offset travel expenses.
