Description: Worldwide we are seeing a growing need for product performance and validation from both the manufacturers and the end users. For the manufacturer a carefully developed validation program is an essential investment in developing and releasing new valves and equipment into increasingly harsh applications. The purpose of having a rigorous validation program is to reduce risk and ensure that the product meets the operational needs of the customer. Product reliability and validation begins with the product development process. This applies to new products or expansion of existing product lines. Stage Gates are an effective way to ensure that reliability targets are defined during the early part of a project and well established through a robust product validation program.

Description: The shale gas revolution in North America has stirred up significant plant design and construction activity in the region. Several LNG export facilities as well as petrochemical facilities are being considered and are at different planning or construction stages. The above activity will most definitely require the selection of a significant number of valves operating in cryogenic applications. The purpose of this workshop is to assist piping systems design engineers explore different criteria to ensure optimal valve technology selection to be installed in low temperature and cryogenic applications. The workshop intends to cover several aspects of the selection process including functionality, material compatibility, process conditions, acceptable leakage, weight and space constraints, initial capital cost as well as operations/maintenance cost throughout the plant life expectancy. The loss of production associated with valves repairs (unplanned facility shutdowns) and valve maintenance (planned facility shutdowns) is often significant therefore it is crucial to define a valve criticality and complexity assessment type of approach along with an effective valve performance monitoring program in order to minimize production disruptions. The workshop also intends to explore current standards and regulations applicable to valve performance in low temperature and cryogenic conditions.

Workshop Applying Adapter Tools for EPCs and End-User NPQC Engineers Room 310C Moderators: Henk Hinssen – iHandl Engineering, Andreas Vogt – F.I.R.S.T GmbH

Description: Adapter tools such as the CONVAL Adapter Tool (CAT) are being entertained by EPCs and NPQC (non process quality control) end users for potential use on their major projects. One reason is to improve the control valve sizing and selection process. During the FEED stage it is important to spot, budget and recommend the appropriate control valve solutions for potential “troublemaking” cases out of a large valve dataset. And during the Detailed Engineering phase it is important to size and select the appropriate vendor solutions for the complete large valve dataset. Adapter tools have been developed for both phases allowing the EPC contractor to run their sizing and selection processes in “batch mode”, call it “bulk engineering”, or call it “automating the sizing & selection process”. End users started piloting such methods for proof of concept for potential use on major projects.

Description: In the last 20 years industry has reduced expected emissions from >500 ppm where today many manufacturers are reporting better than 50 ppm (10X reduction) performance by improving on traditional style packing glands. When fugitive emissions issues were first introduced, bellows seal and double packed with lantern ring arrangements were being promoted as the only solution. Valve and packing technology has come a long way, but what does the future hold? This session will have respected leader in the valve industry look into the future and give us their insight on where we are headed with respect to changes in valve testing for emissions, legislated requirements as well as valve standards and technology.

Description: Discussion will center around the types of castings, where castings are used vs. forgings, standards that govern castings, how valve manufacturers qualify foundries, and actual examples (show and tell) of actual casting defects.

Description: Discussion will be around the variable factors that have to be considered today in the total valve design. Manufacturers now need to take into account all solutions that are currently available to customers on a global scale, while working on a new design. Customers nowadays are less reluctant to purchase valves from suppliers based outside the US. Today, global standards and end user standards from global companies and their needs have to be considered. Design teams are now spread out globally.This helps in designing a truly global product, with an understanding of different local markets.The session will have several experts from different valve companies to discuss the different variables required today to be successful in the complete design of a valve.

Attending the “Hands-On Valve Packing Installation Seminar” affords you the opportunity to learn “Best Practices” for low emission valve packing installation/ valve sealing integrity, while pointing out key differences from traditional valve packing installation you may have learned in the past. There will be a review of the “Valve Condition Requirements” as proposed in the new “Low E Addendum” being added to API RP621. You will be instructed by Vance St. Jean who has over 30 years of field applications experience and continually trains valve technicians for both field and shop repair.Vance also has trained and continues to train end user personnel from engineering, reliability and quality to mechanics across all industries for all types of valves, including traditional on/off valves, critical path MOVs, and control valves. Additionally, for those of you interested, a card certifying you as a “Certified Packing Installer” will be provided upon completion of the workshop through AW Chesterton and Valve World Americas.
