Fall/Winter 2016 Events Recap

Baystate Wing Golf Tournament Wilbraham Country Club hosted over 130 golfers at the 10th anniversary Baystate Wing Hospital Golf Tournament on October 7. The event raised over $75,000, with all proceeds benefitting the hospital’s Emergency Department campaign. Rays of Hope Walk & Run Toward the Cure The 23rd annual Rays of Hope Walk & Run Toward the Cure hosted 18,000 walkers and runners on October 30. Chaired by breast cancer survivor Midge Theulen, the event raised over $610,000 – bringing the total amount raised since 1994 to over $13.5 million. Funds raised this year will support research at the Rays of Hope Center for Breast Cancer Research, help purchase state-of-the-art equipment, and provide breast health programs and outreach both at Baystate Health and within the community. Pictured are two participants celebrating along the event’s picturesque route in Springfield’s Forest Park.

Baystate Noble Ball More than 500 guests danced under the disco ball at the 52nd annual Baystate Noble Ball on October 29 – raising vital funds to renovate the hospital’s main entrance and reception area to ensure that the hospital will be fully accessible to everyone. The “Sensational Seventies”-themed event was chaired by Nabil and Julie Hannoush and Mandana and Ali Salehi (pictured, left to right.)

Extra Life Gaming Marathon for Baystate Children’s Hospital Nearly 200 gamers played board games, video games and yard games in support of Baystate Children’s Hospital during the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals 9th annual Extra Life Gaming Marathon. Together, participants raised over $18,000 for patients and families at Baystate Children’s Hospital. Funds from this year’s gaming marathon will provide support for the purchase of 12 new PlayStation 3 gaming systems at the hospital.

to learn how you can support babies like Piper

Piper Law is now at home with her family in Pittsfield after being born at 25 weeks and spending her first three months of life in the Davis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baystate Children’s Hospital.

“”

“Our first-born daughter, Piper, spent her first 13 weeks of life in the Davis NICU. On top of trying to wrap my head around the fact that Piper was born 15 weeks early, it was tough to be away from home. Having the Angel Eyes camera let my family feel closer to Piper and me, and has helped to make us feel closer to them. We watched “PTV” every night. Being able to see Piper while were away from her made every night happier for all of us.” – Erica Law (Piper’s mom)

Someone is likely saying goodbye, in a quiet room, after a life well-lived. And, throughout our system, more than 12,000 of America’s finest healthcare professionals are helping people of all ages navigate every challenge in between. It all happens because we’re here for you and you’re here for us. To borrow a phrase from President Lincoln, Baystate Health was founded by the people, for the people – generations of individuals and families and companies driven by their own compassion to build hospitals and create endowed funds and give in countless other ways. Our community’s heritage of philanthropy, spanning more than a century, fuels the excellence of today’s Baystate Health. The healthcare organizations that comprise Baystate Health were established by people like you. Generous people who resolved to save lives and change the world, one life at a time. We stand on their shoulders. And we are proud to sustain their work.

As a daughter, sister, friend, cheerleader and nursing student, Evan Bard lit up every room she entered. Her compassion and positive energy now illuminate the Davis NICU at Baystate Children’s Hospital.

Keeping Angel Eyes on NICU Babies

On May 11, 2013, third-year nursing student Evan Bard aced her final exams. Six hours later, a car accident claimed her life. But her dream lives on at Baystate Health.

“”

“Our families love the Angel Eye Cameras. They provide a level of comfort and reassurance to parents at times when visiting is not possible. Many families have breakfast, lunch and dinner with their babies. We’ve had people ‘visiting’ from as far as the west coast and even China.“ Jeffrey Shenberger, MD Chief of Newborn Medicine Baystate Children’s Hospital

2016 Annual Report

Twenty-year-old Evan Bard was a popular cheerleader at Agawam High School and later at Curry College, where she was a straight-A, Dean’s List student. At the time of her death, she was planning to devote her career to taking care of the tiniest, most fragile babies as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse. The Bard family is sustaining Evan’s shimmering life force through the EvvGirl Foundation – and, through the Foundation, her dream has found its way to the Davis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Baystate Children’s Hospital.

A heart for little ones “We set up the EvvGirl Foundation within two weeks of Evan’s passing, with the help of family and friends who very generously made memorial gifts and have continued to support the Foundation,” says her father, Todd Bard, noting that more than 1,500 people attended Evan’s wake. “Evan’s sister, Leisl, is president of the Foundation, and her brother, Elijah, will succeed me as treasurer when he finishes college,” Todd adds. “It will help them stay connected to their sister, while making a difference in the world in her name.” The EvvGirl Foundation is already making a big difference for the families of babies in the Davis NICU.

“We are all connected through our acts of compassion,” says Jane Albert, vice president

“”

of philanthropy at Baystate Health and executive director of Baystate Health Foundation. “Just as it takes a team to nurture our Davis NICU babies, it takes a community to deliver a higher state of caring. The EvvGirl Foundation’s impact comes not only from its gift, but also from its power to inspire others to give. We are so grateful to the Bard family for channeling their unimaginable loss into this incredible gift. I cannot think of a more meaningful way to honor Evan’s memory.”

In July 2015, with support from EvvGirl, Baystate Children’s Hospital began installing ten Angel Eye cameras in the Davis NICU. Using a unique password, parents now log onto a secure website that takes them directly to the camera affixed to their baby’s bassinette – unlocking a real-time visual feed that can be viewed on any device that can access the internet. “This was a fairly complex undertaking, with clinical and IT teams coming together to facilitate installation of the technology, safeguard confidentiality and address other challenges,” Todd explains, “Baystate has been an amazing partner in making it happen.”

Calling all Angels We invite you to join the EvvGirl Foundation, New York Life Insurance Company and other community donors by helping to purchase the additional cameras needed to meet the goal of keeping Angel Eyes on every baby in the Davis NICU at Baystate Children’s Hospital. Your gift of $2,500 will be honored with an on-screen message every time a family logs onto the Angel Eyes account linked to your camera. Gifts of $2,500 in support of the Angel Eyes program will receive Bronze level benefits in our President’s Society; gifts of $10,000 or more will also be recognized on the Baystate Health Foundation President’s Society donor wall in the main lobby of Baystate Medical Center.

If you would like to help keep Angel Eyes on every baby in the Davis NICU at Baystate Children’s Hospital, please contact: Kathy Tobin at (413) 794-5996 or [email protected].

“Evan always had a heart for little ones,” remembers her mother, Barbara. “Through this project, we’re able to help fulfill her dream of taking care of them. We’re especially pleased to help bring this technology to Baystate Children’s Hospital, where Evan was born.”

Inspiring generosity Nearly one-third of the bassinettes in the Davis NICU at Baystate Children’s Hospital now have Angel Eyes, thanks to the EvvGirl Foundation and other individual and corporate donors, including New York Life Insurance Company, which made a $25,000 gift to purchase an additional 10 cameras. The goal is for every bed to be so equipped. “Our company is dedicated to keeping people safe at every stage of life, and we are so happy to be able to help the families of infants in the Davis NICU feel more connected and secure,” says Jean Deliso, an Agawam-based New York Life Insurance Company registered agent and newly-appointed chair of Baystate Health Foundation. “We are very proud to partner with Baystate Health – and deeply honored to build on the inspirational generosity of the Bard family.”

Our goal is to attach an Angel Eye camera to every bassinette in the Davis NICU – building on the Bard family’s generosity.

Country Bank Helps Keep Care Local With support from Country Bank and other generous friends, we’re building a new Emergency Department at Baystate Wing Hospital – one that’s built for tomorrow’s technology and tomorrow’s patient care needs.

Baystate Wing Hospital’s new Emergency Department will be built to accommodate 24,000 patient visits annually – more than double its current capacity.

“We believe that communities with local access to quality healthcare thrive,” says Paul Scully, Country Bank President and CEO. “We welcome generous members of our community to join us in supporting this terrific project.” A $2.8 million campaign is underway at Baystate Wing Hospital to build a new Emergency Department that will match the excellence of the healthcare professionals who work in it.

A $1 million corporate gift leads the way

When Baystate Wing’s current Emergency Department was built in 1995, it was designed for 10,000 patient visits annually. Today, that number approaches 24,000. Ellen and Ed Noonan are chairing our fundraising campaign in support of the new, larger Emergency Department. We’re almost halfway there, thanks in large part to a generous $1 million gift from Country Bank.

Melanie LaFlamme (center right) pictured with members of her Baystate Wing Emergency Department care team (left to right): Laura Charron, RN; Thomas Mappleback, RN; and Jamie Bradshaw, RN.

“Country Bank’s pledge supports our longstanding financial commitment to our community hospitals,” says Paul Scully, president and CEO. “Over the years, the Bank has never wavered in its support of both Baystate Wing Hospital and Baystate Mary Lane. We believe that communities with local access to quality healthcare thrive. Country Bank welcomes generous members of our community to join us in supporting this terrific project.”

It wasn’t the first time Melanie LaFlamme had dislocated her right shoulder. When Melanie rolled over in her sleep and felt the pain, she immediately knew what had happened. And she knew what she needed. Melanie and her husband headed to Baystate Wing Hospital.

The new Emergency Department – on which construction is scheduled to begin this Spring – will deliver more space, more privacy and less waiting. It will be built to accommodate 21st century technology and care, as well as the special needs of patients who present with behavioral health challenges.

They arrived at midnight and left at 6am. During the hours in between, Melanie says, she had just about the best experience a person can have in an emergency department in the middle of the night.

“We are very grateful for Country Bank’s generous support,” says Mike Moran, president and chief administrative officer for Baystate Health’s Eastern Region, which includes Baystate Wing Hospital and Baystate Mary Lane. “The Bank has been an important partner to us for more than three decades, supporting – among other projects – new surgical suites and inpatient units at Baystate Wing and renovation of Baystate Mary Lane’s Radiology Department and Oncology Services. When our new Emergency Department opens its doors, it will stand as a testament to Country Bank’s longstanding investment in high-quality healthcare in our region – and to the generosity of every donor to this campaign.”

“I was in so much pain, but the staff somehow made it as stress-free as possible,” she remembers, reserving special praise for Tom Mappleback, RN, Laura Charron, RN, Jamie Bradshaw, RN, Tyler Christianson, DO, and patient care technician Barbara Dart. “They checked on me regularly while I was waiting to be seen, brought me heated blankets, and just took really good care of me from the moment we checked in to the moment I came out of anesthesia after having my shoulder set. And they all got along so well. I knew I was in good hands.”

“It was actually kind of magical,” she says.

Making an Enduring Impact through Planned Giving Bernadette and Jan Piepul’s legacy builds on decades of care and community service – promising to deliver a higher state of caring at Baystate Health for generations to come. Retirement is one of life’s sentinel crossroads – a moment when one finds oneself looking both backward and forward. What have I achieved? What gives my life meaning? What will my legacy be? For Bernadette and Jan Piepul, post-retirement estate planning led to a generous, lasting gift to provide future support for Baystate Children’s Hospital. Lifelong Springfield residents, the Piepuls have always had a special connection with Baystate Health and a desire to help children – the youngest, most vulnerable members of our community. Jan grew up near Baystate Medical Center and enjoyed getting to know many Baystate care providers who came to his family business, Piepul’s Camera Center. Bernadette recently retired from a distinguished 36-year career in surgical nursing – a long and fulfilling adventure that took her from the operating room to post-operative care to management of General Surgery at Baystate Medical Center. By including a gift to Baystate Children’s Hospital in their estate plan, the Piepuls are providing crucial future resources to improve children’s health and well-being.

2016 Annual Report

Supporting a shared mission Bernadette and Jan have been making charitable contributions in support of patient care at Baystate Health for more than 25 years. A few years ago, they joined other members of our community in making our Children’s Specialty Center possible – a facility for outpatient specialty care. By including Baystate Children’s Hospital in their will, the Piepuls have now planned their largest and most lasting gift. Leaving a legacy at Baystate Children’s Hospital was a natural decision for the Piepuls. They share a profound sense of personal and professional mission with the healthcare professionals there, as well as deep compassion for the children who are struggling with health challenges. “You see the impact of philanthropy everywhere at Baystate Children’s Hospital – from life-saving equipment to the clinical and Child Life services provided throughout the hospital,” says Bernadette. “You feel the commitment of the nurses and other staff members. They love their jobs and they love their patients. We love the idea of supporting all that they do with an estate gift.”

Spirit of caring Through their bequest, Bernadette and Jan Piepul will ensure that the vital work of Baystate Children’s Hospital will be sustained at the highest level for years to come. And they will help advance innovations beyond imagining for young patients and their families. “We’re so happy that our estate will be helping the children of our community long after we’re gone, in ways that we can’t even begin to envision today,” says Jan. “New, life-saving technologies will transform the care provided by a new generation of healthcare professionals. And we’ll be part of it through our legacy.” “The care you receive at Baystate is the best care you can receive anywhere,” says Bernadette. “I was proud to devote my nursing career to Baystate Health’s patients, and we are proud to sustain that care through our bequest.”

“”

“To punctuate decades of service with an enduring legacy gift, as the Piepuls have done, is a powerful act of generosity,” says Baystate Health President and CEO, Mark Keroack, MD. Bernadette and Jan’s generosity epitomizes the spirit of community at Baystate Health, says Mark Keroack, MD, president and CEO. “Healthcare is more than a career, it’s a calling,” says Keroack. “We are grateful that some of the nation’s finest healthcare professionals – nurses like Bernadette Piepul and men and women in an array of other professions – choose to dedicate their lives to our patients. We’re grateful to their families, as well – people like Jan Piepul – who make this all-encompassing life commitment along with their loved ones. To punctuate decades of service with an enduring legacy gift, as the Piepuls have done, is a powerful act of generosity.”

What will your legacy be? The Baystate Health Foundation Legacy Society celebrates the generosity of people in our community who have included Baystate Health in their long-term philanthropic plans. Financial Overview

your impact Thanks to you, Baystate Health Foundation is growing steadily; its total assets increased by more than $7 million between 2015 and 2016. That’s vitally important – because our community’s needs are growing, too. Our Foundation distributed $9.3 million last year in support of facilities, services, and programs throughout Baystate Health – helping to deliver a higher state of caring for people in every city and town in our region. It all happened because of you. Whether you participate in an event, contribute to a capital campaign, make a gift to endowment, or support our Annual Fund, your generosity drives the far-reaching impact of Baystate Health Foundation. You help to provide state-of-the-art technology and facilities, enhance our medical and surgical services, extend our reach into the community, and make life warmer and safer for everyone – from the tiniest baby in our Davis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to people who are coping with the challenges of aging.

Dennis Chalke Treasurer & Chief Financial Officer, Baystate Health Treasurer, Baystate Health Foundation

Are you as excited as we are about the positive energy that flows through our Foundation and by the promise of all that we can accomplish together?
