Town of Woodstock, VA Call to Artists for Jane’s Garden Sculpture Deadline for Entries: May 29, 2015 Project Description: The Town of Woodstock Enhancement Committee (WEC) is seeking one sculpture to exhibit in Jane’s Garden; a quaint, newly developed, landscaped garden in the historic downtown district of Woodstock, VA. This sculpture will be on exhibit August 31, 2015 through August 31, 2017. The WEC is accepting submissions now through May 29, 2015 from experienced artists for a freestanding sculpture. The sculpture may incorporate interactive as well as functional elements. This invitation is extended to all artists 18 and older regardless of where they live. In addition to finished pieces, proposed work will also be considered. An identification plaque will be provided for the sculpture. The WEC will promote the exhibit through local media.

Location: Jane’s Garden, a small pocket park in historic downtown Woodstock, is the site for the temporary sculpture. It was established in the fall of 2014 in honor of the unfaltering dedication to the Town of Woodstock by the previous WEC Enhancement Coordinator, Jane Beasley. It is adjacent to a typically dry creek bed and privately owned building. This area has been privy to flooding in the past but on rare occasion. The park is accessible via a sidewalk that is along Old Valley Pike/VA-Route 11 which runs through Town. There is no electricity provided. Photos and drawings of the site can be viewed at townofwoodstockva.gov, Our Community, Arts and Culture.

Guidelines for Submitted Works: The theme for this exhibit is “Capturing the Valley.” Works submitted must be of a scale and material suitable for outdoor display. All proposed sculptures should be designed to withstand an outdoor, frequently visited, unmonitored environment with little or no maintenance for the duration of the exhibit. They must be original and suitable for family viewing. The work must be constructed so that it can be securely anchored. Solar lighting provided by the artist is accepted and encouraged. Jane’s Garden includes one concrete pad surrounded by native and non-native plantings. The pad is a 10 ft diameter circle and can hold up to 1,500 lbs. Sculptures cannot be over 15 ft tall and 9 ft wide. Anchor bolts are required and must be set at least six inches from the edges of the pads.

Payments and Awards: There is no entry fee. The artist chosen to participate will receive an award of up to $5,000 for the selected piece. The award will be paid in one lump sum upon completion of the installation and receipt of an invoice. A budget is requested.

Installation: Costs associated with transportation of the piece, travel of the artist, insurance during travel and installation, installation and removal of the work are the responsibility of the artist. The town will provide proper and necessary pad and installation support as feasible. Completed installation must pass town inspection, meeting all safety requirements. The artist whose project is accepted will be required to sign a loan agreement; a sample of which is posted on our website at townofwoodstockva.gov, Our Community, Arts and Culture. Insurance on the sculpture once installed will be provided by the Town of Woodstock for a value to be agreed upon with the artist based on the budget or determined by an independent appraiser.

Entry Procedures: Each artist may submit up to three completed sculptures or proposed pieces for consideration. To apply, please submit the following in this order:  One CD or portable drive with digital images (no slides accepted). Each sculpture may be represented by up to five digital images, showing different views of the finished piece or of a model or drawings of the concept. A total of no more than fifteen images (five per sculpture) may be submitted.  Three copies – A completed application (provided on next page).  Three copies – A budget (not to exceed $5,000) to include all costs such as materials and artist fees.  Three copies – A drawing of how the piece will be anchored to the pad.  Three copies – A one page description with drawings and/or an image of a maquette (only if submitting a proposal).  Three copies – A current resume (if applicable, but not required).
