GOAL OF THE GROUP We want to learn what it means to be a 2 am friend and why interdependence leads to a more fulfilling life than independence.
SCRIPTURE Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NIV King Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes. We’ve talked about Solomon before, but a lot of is writings focus on politics, religion, wealth, friendship, but ultimately wisdom. In the section we’re going to look at, Solomon writes specifically on isolation, and it’s danger in our lives.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
THINK ABOUT “Life is Better Together.”
1. Share: Tell about a time or situation where you had to accomplish something that required help. What would have happened if you chose to be independent rather than interdependent? 2. Read Ecclesiastes 4:9 - “Two are better than one...” a. When you read that statement what are some of the fears or excuses that come to mind? 3. Read Ecclesiastes 4:10-12 – Solomon is presenting this idea that to sustain your life, you need others. So here are some questions for you around this idea: a. Who is present when you fall? b. Who in your life can ask you the hard questions and not take “I’m fine” as an answer? c. How did those relationships get to that place? d. Do those relationships point you back to the truth found in scripture? 4. Discuss: At some point in each of our lives we will need relationships that go beyond surface level. You need people who know you, challenge you, push you, but also stand by you in life’s difficult moments. Isolation doesn’t prepare you for the moments when community is needed. What step have you been avoiding to step out into interdependence? 5. Discuss: “Everyone needs some ones and there’s a someone who needs you.” Why is it important that we don’t just settle for what we currently have but that we are looking for the someone’s that may be waiting for us? a. How could we do this as a group? 6. Pray - Ask God to give clarity on what steps each person in your group needs to take. Is He calling you to be a 2 am friend to someone right now? Has He encouraged you to reach out to a 2 am friend for something going on in their lives?

1. Write a thank you note to someone who was your 2 am friend when you needed it most. 2. Ask God if there is someone who needs you to be their 2 am friend right now. Take a step towards building that relationship this week.
