United Nations University Objectives: The United Nations University (UNU) is an international community of scholars engaged in research, postgraduate training and dissemination of knowledge in furtherance of the purposes and principles of the United Nations, its member states and peoples. It serves as an academic arm for the United Nations system, contributes to capacity building particularly in developing countries, and serves as a platform for new and creative ideas and dialogue. In addition to the UNU Centre (Headquarters) located in Tokyo, UNU has already established fifteen Research and Training Centres/Programmes worldwide. For more information please visit www.unu.edu. United Nations University – Office of Communications: The UNU Communications Office is the gateway for disseminating to the media, academia, the UN system and the wider public the outcome of UNU’s work as a Think Tank, its Academic and Degree Programmes, its research and its capacity building. It produces and provides print and electronic information material on UNU and organizes its regular NY public events. It is responsible for UNU’s website and social media presence. In addition, the Communications Office handles the Media Management including issuing press releases, liaising with journalists and scheduling interviews with UNU experts. The Head of the UNU Communications Office acts as the UNU Spokesperson. UNU is searching for a Communications Officer to be located at its Office at the United Nations in New York. The Communications Officer, reporting to the Head of Communications, will be responsible for a wide range of communication activities such as media relations, event management and online communication in close cooperation with communication teams at UNU institutes and programs located around the world.

Responsibilities: Reporting directly to the Head of Communications, the main duties and responsibilities of the Communications Officer include the following: •

Press activities: Prepare press releases, organize press briefings and interviews, reply to media requests, brief UNU directors and staff members before interviews, offer media related research topics for professional articles in research magazines, maintain and actualize the press database, organize workshops for journalists on UNU related topics; Event management: Establish and organize a regular public lecture series on UNU related topics, organize the participation in exhibitions and conferences; Information material: Conceptual design, writing and editing of printed and multimedia material; Internet: Maintain and update the UNU website and social media platforms in close cooperation with other staff from the office of communications; Information management: Management and retrieval of media related topics in close cooperation with UNU institutes worldwide, liaise with communication and scientific staff of UNU institutes on media relevant topics and material, establish an internet based expert service; Quality assurance: Supervise contractors such as designers, photographers, producers or print offices; Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Head of Communications.

Required Qualifications and Experience: • • • • • • • • • •

MA Degree (or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or Humanities; Minimum two (2) years working experience in a research organization, university or company in the field of research communications or as a journalist in the field of science journalism; Excellent writing skills and writing experience on a professional level; Professional experience in event management; Organized with excellent time management, forward planning, and prioritization skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines; Energetic with a high level of creativity and the ability to translate complex scientific issues and disseminate them to the various target audiences; Knowledge of relevant computer and media applications including familiarity with social media platforms and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign); Fluency in both oral and written English is essential. Knowledge of any other United Nations official languages would be an asset; Proven communication and interpersonal skills including good networking ability, particularly with media at national and international levels; The ability to interact with colleagues of diverse national, cultural and religious backgrounds and with political representatives and diverse communities in both industrialized and developing countries.

Remuneration: We offer a competitive net salary (tax-exempted) at P-2 level commensurate to level of experience and allowances including post adjustment. Post adjustment is subject to change. The post carries the standard set of United Nations benefits and entitlements for international positions in the UN Common Systems, including participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, the possibility of participation in a health insurance programme, education grant, removal expenses and home leave. Duration of Contract: This is a full time fixed-term appointment. The period of initial appointment will be for a period of two (2) years with the possibility of renewal on a rolling fixed-term appointment basis, subject to satisfactory work performance. The mandatory age of retirement for United Nations staff is 62 years. Staff members of the United Nations University are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Rector and may be assigned to any of the activities or offices of the United Nations University. The Rector reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a level below that is advertised.
