Paying Chamber Dues Is A Win-Win For You And Your Community These are tough times for most everyone. Many businesses have had to lay off workers. Everyone is tightening their belts. In fact, most of us have never seen an economic period with so many serious problems and so much uncertainty. But one of the endearing factors about we Americans is our resiliency. Because we live in this country, we know we will get through this and become the better for it. As an organization that serves this community in countless ways, your Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will strive to continue what we’ve been doing and that is work to bring jobs or retain and grow those we have, support the business community and Clark County through our Strategic Vision initiative. One way to help your business and community, is a membership in the Chamber. If you’re wondering how it will benefit you, here are a few examples: • Many businesses save significant amounts of money by being included in the group rating program with the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. • Our Member2Member program allows you and your employees to obtain discounts from local merchants that are exclusive to members. Plus, your business can post a coupon. • Our quarterly newsletter, launched last year, provides news and information about the community that you won’t find anywhere else. • We have lobbied local, state and federal government officials on such issues as mandatory sick leave, prevailing wage changes, workers’ compensation changes, health care and more. • Last year, we attended a meet and greet in San Antonio, Texas, encouraging potential transfers from Brooks Air Force Base to consider living in Clark County if they accept a transfer to Wright-Patterson. • We were at a meeting in Chicago with site selection consultants, learning more about how we can better promote ourselves to businesses looking for a place to locate.

they are, provide assistance. This is more calls than have ever been made and could one day serve as a national model for economic development. • Our many networking programs allow an individual sponsor to introduce what they do to the community, while those in attendance can make business contacts. • Our partnership with the Dayton Development Coalition gives us inroads when businesses contact that organization about locating in the region. We participate in the DDC’s annual one-day journey to Washington, D.C. to advocate for the region with our state senators and members of Congress. Our affiliation also gives us opportunities to connect with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. • An independent survey showed that tourism sales in Clark County totaled $327 million in 2007. We rank above the state average with eight percent of jobs tied to tourism. The driving force behind tourism is the Chamber’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. • We promote events throughout the county and maintain kiosks in several locations along with the visitor racks in hotels/motels and other visitor stops. • No matter what type of business you own, you benefit by investing in The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. • When David Garrett announced he had made a recreational gold find in local waterways, the Chamber brought together interested parties to discuss how we might use this to bring visitors here. You get the picture. Your Chamber is in the business of helping you succeed as we strive to increase value to you. We hope you agree that the Chamber is an integral part of Springfield and Clark County, but we can’t do what we do without your support. Your membership demonstrates that you care about this community and care about its future, while providing your company and employees the many benefits the Chamber offers. Phone the Chamber at 937-325-7621 for information or visit our website at www.greaterspringfield.com.

• We contacted more than 1,000 local businesses in our first full year of the HITS (hiring, investing, training, space) initiative, asking if the business is doing any of the four activities, and if

Strategic Vision Being Implemented by Chamber Board The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is working on an ambitious five-point Strategic Vision that encompasses everything from developing the workforce to changing perceptions. “To move this community forward, we must tackle these many issues head-on,” said Chamber President Mike McDorman. Community leaders will be asked to join groups related to each goal. The strategic vision is an updated version of Vision 20-20 that was reviewed at the last Chamber retreat. “We found that many of those goals were accomplished and other changes,” McDorman said of the initiative created a number of years ago. “We had to realign and reprioritize what needs to be done.” Many of the goals set in the updated vision are being worked on, he said, but the purpose is to be more specific about how they can be achieved and to hold the group accountable. The five goals include: Goal 1 Grow Greater Springfield by broadening and strengthening existing economic development efforts to sustain quality job growth and increase local wealth in the short- and long-term. Goal 2 Develop the Workforce’s ability to meet the needs of business by enhancing the education, training and workforce development program of the public school resources. Build a competitive workforce prepared for the jobs of the future. Goal 3 Change Perceptions by enhancing Greater Springfield’s internal and external image through branding and marketing efforts, retaining and attracting more businesses, residents and visitors. Goal 4 Revitalize Strategic Community Areas, complete the Buck Creek Adventure Sports Program, Hollandia Gardens and other efforts to create a more vibrant community and improve housing options. Develop and implement strategic planning in these target areas to make them better, stronger environments to live in, do business in and visit.

How To Achieve The Goals To achieve goal one, the report suggests continuing to promote the Hiring Investing Training Space (HITS) program that is directed by the Chamber’s Community Improvement Corporation and includes a number of partners. Other ways to achieve the goal are developing and filling PrimeOhio II Corporate Park across I-70 from the Clark County Fairgrounds and pursuing opportunities in targeted job sectors. Those sectors include advanced manufacturing, aerospace and technology, health care, logistics and trade, professional services and tourism and community development. The objectives in goal two include improving student performance and instilling confidence in the public schools. Others are to launch a marketing campaign to promote careers in target business sectors, support Aspire P16 and advocate for the expansion of engineering and technical programs in regional colleges and universities. Goal three can be attained by enhancing community pride. That can be accomplished by increasing awareness of the many opportunities here, promoting the Greater Springfield brand and inviting Wittenberg University to be a key partner in Chamber initiatives. It also calls for creating opportunities for Wittenberg students to become more invested in the community. Key components of achieving goal four are creating housing opportunities downtown, enhancing neighborhoods by supporting such efforts as the South Limestone Gateway project, continuing downtown development and expanding Wittenberg’s role in revitalization efforts. Much of goal five can be achieved through communication with the City of Springfield, local leaders and the public. Ways to fund implementation of the goals will be pursued. “Progress will be gauged through benchmarks to be established,” McDorman said.

Goal 5 Build a Culture of Implementation by strengthening stakeholder relationships and obtain the resources necessary for success; building the resources and leadership necessary to succeed in all endeavors.
