Croatia is one hour ahead of (GMT) and also has daylight saving which is adjusted during summer, the same as the rest of Europe. During Australian summer, Croatia is 10 hours behind, and 8 hours during winter.

Food

Croatian food is the result of the differing cultures which have influenced the country over the years. Therefore there is no uniformity as each region has its own specialty. Some traditional dishes which are popular include the Burek, a layered pie made with meat or cheese, Piroska, a cheese doughnut from Zagreb, Brodet, mixed fish stewed with rice from the Dalmatian region, and Manistra Od Bibica, a bean and fresh maize soup from inland regions.

Getting Around

Croatia Airlines is the only airline which services domestic routes with regular flights from Zagreb to Brac, Dubrovnik, Pula, Split and Zadar. Travel via the train network is increasing as the infrastructure is being improved, but there are some cities which are not yet linked via train. Bus system is relatively easy to use as the bus network is far reaching and reasonably priced although difficult to prebook. The car rental is also an option for mainland destination.

Accommodation

Getting There

By Air: Qatar flies from major Australian city via Doha to Croatia. Most other airline can connect to Croatia’s main cities of Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik via other points in Europe. Driving through Croatia along the Adriatic Highway provides views of towns built on slopes, bays of blue water, and craggy cliffs. Explore Croatia via car, bus, or organised tour to most easily enjoy Croatia's natural beauty.

Island Hopping Island-hopping is an easy and affordable way to explore some of the 400 islands scattered along Croatia’s coastline. Most of the big ports are near airports, with catamarans and car ferries running daily between most islands. The short distances between the islands make it easy to visit a number of destinations. On pages 8-9 are sample itineraries, but you can customise your itinerary by choosing the locations and length of stay and we’ll organise the hotels and ferries for you.

Cruises Boarding a cruise in Croatia is not like embarking on a typical cruise, but more like joining a floating hotel. It is a great alternative to island hopping where you’ll have to negotiate the fiddly ferry system, plus there is no need to carry your baggage between hotel rooms. These cruises do not sail at night and instead dock in port so that you can spend the night exploring the destination to soak up the atmosphere or sample the local cuisine. Cruises also dock in a number of secluded bays and beaches during the day to allow you to swim and enjoy the beauty of the coast.

Flexible Itineraries We are very good at many things, however we excel at flexibility. Adding an extra night or an additional island could greatly enhance your trip. (B, D) Day 3 Sun: Bled-Bohinj-Bled Enjoy a relaxing tour of glacier Lake Bled, one of the most popular destinations in Slovenia. Afterwards take a boat ride to the island and a visit to Bled Castle. The terrace of the castle affords wonderful views of the lake and surrounding mountains - on a clear day you can see Slovenia's highest mountain, Mount Triglav. Then travel to Lake Bohinj, one of the best kept secrets in the area. Overnight in Bled at Hotel Triglav or similar. (B) Day 4 Mon: Bled-Klagenfurt-Wörth Lake-Bled Today visit Austria. Pass through the Karavanke tunnel and enter the historic county of Carinthia, to Lake Wörth for a panoramic tour. Continue to the charming Klagenfurt, with the beautiful Lindworm fountain, the Altplatz. Afterwards visit the Loibl pass, a high mountain pass in the karavanke chain of the Southern Alps. Enjoy lunch on the shore of Worth Lake. Overnight Bled at Hotel Triglav or similar. (B, L) Day 5 Tue: Bled-Postojna & Predjama Castle-Rovinj Morning head towards Croatia and stop at the Postojna Caves.One of the largest underground caves system in Europe hides wondrous geological creations and is home of the olm. Visit a family run brewery to try out the local delicacies and taste the beer made of fresh spring water, the best barley malt and hops. Arrival in Rovinj in the late afternoon. Overnight in Rovinj at Hotel Eden or similar. (B) Day 6 Wed: Rovinj-Istriatour-Rovinj Start the day with sightseeing of the most romantic towns in Istria - Rovinj. Enjoy a walk through labyrinths of cobbled streets, which lead through some of the most picturesque streets in Istria and numerous galleries of unique art pieces. Day 1 Sat: Zagreb On arrival in Zagreb transfer to the hotel (Hotel Dubrovnik, Hotel Palace or similar). Enjoy a welcome drink at a group get together in the evening. Acquaint yourself with the tour manager and others over a plate of Štrukli, a local specialty in the Zagreb area. (D) Day 2 Sun: Zagreb-Opatija After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour of Zagreb with an English speaking guide. In the fortified, medieval Upper Town and will visit St. Mark's church, with its multicolour tiled roof, Parliament, the government palace, and many fine old buildings. After the sightseeing we proceed to Opatija situated on the picturesque Kvarner Bay, which used to be the favourite spa resort of the Habsburgs and the European aristocracy including famous personalities such as Mahler, Chekhov and Isadora Duncan. (B, D) Day 3 Mon: Opatija-Istria-Opatija Today journey to the Istrian peninsula and visit the 2000 year old roman Colosseum located in Pula. Afterwards leisure time to relax in Rovinj, perhaps the most beautiful city in Istria and the inspiration of many artists. Then depart to Livade for a sample of one the Istrian tastiest treasures, the truffle. Dinner and overnight in Opatija at Remisens Premier Hotel or similar. (B) Day 4 Tue: Opatija-Plitvice The most beautiful and oldest national park in Croatia under UNESCO protection - consisting of 16 lakes connected by magnificent waterfalls. The park is located in Lika mountain region and visited mostly on foot. However the entrance includes a boat ride across the Emerald Green Lake 'Kozjak' and a train ride back to the main entrance. The visit of the park grounds takes approximately three hours. Dinner and overnight at a Hotel Degenija or similar in Plitvice lakes. (B, D) Day 5 Wed: Plitvice-Sibenik-Split After breakfast at the hotel, drive down from the mountain region of Lika via the coast towards the city of Zadar. The historic town of Zadar is rich in cultural historical monuments. Here you can see The Roman forum dated to the 1st century AD, the church of St. Donatus dated to the 9th century AD. Of special interest are the famous Zadar Sea Organs, one of a kind in the world. From Zadar we continue to the Bibich Winery for a gourmet experience that is more than a simple wine tasting. (B) Day 6 Thu: Split-Trogir-Split Split is the handiwork of seventeen centuries of men and women building and remodelling, adding, tearing down and touching up, so that 18th century houses intersect with ancient Roman walls and fourth century chambers house twentieth century apartments. At the core of this sprawling cityscape is the palace the Emperor Diocletian built for his golden years at the turn of the fourth century. Today's lunch will be the traditional Dalmatian dish - Pasticada which we will taste at the Tragos restaurant in Trogir. The town of Trogir, a UNESCO site, has a fascinating 2300 years of continuous urban tradition. Its rich culture was created under the influence of old Greeks, Romans, and Venetians. Trogir has a high concentration of palaces, churches, and towers, as well as a fortress on a small island. Sometimes referred to as the floating museum town. Hotel Radisson Blu or similar. (B, L) Day 7 Fri: Split-Ston-Dubrovnik On our way to Dubrovnik stop near the town of Ston to visit a local winery and taste the famous 'Plavac Mali' wine, a very close relative to the Zinfandel. In this winery the traditional wine making business has been passed on for generations. The wine tasting includes a wine presentation on all the specifics of the winemaking process, wine tasting and snack. Arrival in Dubrovnik and overnight at Valamar Lacroma Resort or similar. (B) Day 8 Sat: Dubrovnik Completed in the thirteen century, the old city of Dubrovnik has remained basically unchanged. Its medieval ramparts encircle the city which pedestrians can enter through one of two gates - either way, they cross a stone bridge under the watchful gaze of the city's patron Saint Blaise (Vlaho), to find themselves joining the evening promenade down the broad, stone-paved avenue known as Stradun. (B, L) Day 5 Sun: Markarska-Bol (Brac)-Stari Grad This morning we continue our cruise towards the next destination – the island of Brač, more precisely to the town of Bol, known for its famous Zlatni Rat beach (Golden horn), a natural phenomenon that dominates the other beaches of Bol with its specific form. After swimming break and lunch we continue our journey towards Stari Grad on the Hvar island, the sunniest Adriatic island. Free afternoon to explore this unique town. The famous Stari Grad Field is the oldest in Croatia and the best preserved example of ancient Greek system of agriculture. Together with the old town it is a part of world heritage protected by UNESCO. (B, L) Day 6 Mon: Stari Grad-Hvar After lunch stop for swim and refreshment in clear, crystal blue sea at nearby Pakleni islands. In the afternoon enjoy a sightseeing of the extraordinary town of Hvar, which offers many cultural and historical sites (Renaissance cathedral, the oldest communal theatre in Europe founded in 1612, Franciscan monastery, the Benedictine convent famous for their lace listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Spanjola fortress towering high above the town) and many restaurants and bars open late into the night. (B, L) Day 7 Tue: Hvar-Vis Early in the morning we cruise towards the little Biševo island to visit the Blue cave, a magnificent natural phenomenon. As sometimes weather conditions can be very unpredictable, the possibility of our visit will depend on those conditions,

however you will be notified of this by the crew. We continue towards the island of Vis, which was a strategic navy harbour due to its unique geographical position and as such closed to the public until recently. Because of its isolation, Vis has a special charm -‘the Mediterranean as it once was’ which makes it really interesting to see. Overnight is in the town of Vis, situated on the northern side of the island, developed near the remains of the ancient Issa, first urban centre in Croatia. If interested, visit the remains of the Roman thermal Place, City museum or simply take a walk enjoying the view of beautiful ''Villae Rusticae'' situated along the coast. (B, L) Day 8 Wed: Vis-Korcula During breakfast depart towards Korcula, the birthplace of famous explorer and adventurer Marco Polo. Surrounded by medieval walls, Korcula resembles a miniature Dubrovnik when approaching from the sea. It has more legends, tales and monuments than you will find anywhere else. Today, Korcula is the only place in the world where the Spanish medieval knight's game Moreška is still performed. Upon arrival enjoy a walk through the streets of the old town built in the shape of a fish bone. Enjoy the numerous konobas/taverns, restaurants, cocktail bars or night-club located within and around the city walls. Overnight in port. (B, L) Day 9 Thu: Korcula-Miljet-Sipan or Slano Continue cruising towards one of the greenest Adriatic islands – the island of Mljet, where on the western part, the National Park is situated. Free time to enjoy the beauties of the National Park - two salt lakes connected by a narrow channel to the sea, a boat ride to the St Mary isle in the Great Lake, where the old church and monastery are situated. Continue the cruise towards Šipan, part of Elaphite islands near Dubrovnik, or towards Slano on the coastline, both are small fishermen's villages for overnight in the port. (B, L) Day 10 Fri: Sipan or Slano-Dubrovnik Early in the morning we depart towards our final destination – a true pearl of the Adriatic. After lunch short stop at Sipan island to discover this “paradise on Earth”, as the famous writer George Bernard Shaw described. Sightseeing of Dubrovnik followed by an optional cable car ride up to Srđ mountain for spectacular views of the old town. We recommend a stroll along the city walls, 1940 meters in length with magnificent views of the old town of Dubrovnik and the surrounding islands. Overnight in the harbour Gruž. Day 1 Wed: Dubrovnik Arrive in Dubrovnik, transfer to hotel for overnight. Day 2 Thu: Dubrovnik-Montenegro-Dubrovnik After early breakfast join a bus excursion to Montenegro. A small country with magnificent mountains rising above the Adriatic Sea, filled with natural beauty, clear lakes, fast rivers and serene beaches. Enjoy exploring Montenegro's contrasting nature attractions, interesting history, culture and tradition. On return at approx 6:30pm transfer to your hotel in Dubrovnik for overnight. (B) Day 3 Fri: Dubrovnik-Mostar-Dubrovnik Join the escorted bus tour to Mostar, a town of contrasts, culture, color and cuisine. It is divided not only by the Neretva River that flows through it but also by religion and culture from one bank to the other. Mostar, in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina, is where “east meets west”. Just a short drive up the Adriatic coast and then inwards following the breathtaking Neretva Valley will offer stunning views of the local countryside. Here the Neretva river enriches the land bringing to your senses the colors and scents from mandarin and kiwi plantations. Overnight at your hotel in Dubrovnik. (B) Day 4 Sat: Dubrovnik-Sipan or Slano Enjoy morning guided tour of Dubrovnik, the special charm of this old city are the buildings that have remained from the time of the old Dubrovnik Republic. Tour ends with transfer to Gruž port where the ship will be docked and your luggage already on board. Departure from Dubrovnik harbor Gruz at 13:00, cruise along the south Dalmatian coast down to the one of Elaphite islands - Šipan, or small village Slano on the mainland. Both are peaceful fishermen's villages where you can experience the fantastic sunset. Overnight in the port. (B, L) Day 5 Sun: Sipan or Slano-Mljet-Korcula After breakfast we continue our journey towards the island and national park Mljet. Lunch on board. Free time to enjoy the salt lakes in the National Park and enjoy the sun and sea on this peaceful island. We continue to Korčula where we arrive in late afternoon. Surrounded by ancient walls and fortified bastions Korčula’s old town is very well preserved with its layout and structure dating back to 13th century. Overnight in port. (B, L) Day 6 Mon: Korcula-Vis Early in the morning we cruise towards the little Biševo island to visit the Blue cave, a magnificent natural phenomenon. As sometimes weather conditions can be very unpredictable, the possibility of our visit will depend on those conditions, however you will be notified of this by the crew. Entrance to Blue

Cave is to be paid on the spot (approx. € 9 per person). We continue towards the island of Vis, which was, because of its unique geographical position, a strategic harbour for the navy and closed to the public until recently. Overnight in the town of Vis, situated on the northern side of the island, developed near the remains of the ancient Issa, first urban centre in Croatia. If interested, visit the remains of the Roman thermal place, City museum or simply take a walk enjoying the views of the beautiful villae rusticae situated along the waterfront. (B, L) Day 7 Tue: Vis-Hvar Our next destination is little island Šćedro where we will have enough time to relax and refresh in the clean, crystal blue sea. Departure for Hvar after lunch. Hvar is the longest island in the Adriatic. Here we can find the Renaissance cathedral with its original tower; also the oldest community theatre in Europe was founded here in 1612. City of Hvar offers plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes that are open long into the night. (B, L) Day 8 Wed: Hvar-Bol-Makarska Leave Hvar and cruise towards the island of Brač, more precisely to the town of Bol, best known for its famous Zlatni rat beach (Golden horn), a natural phenomenon that with its specific form dominates the other beaches of Croatia. After the swimming break or short walk around the village we continue towards Makarska where strolling along the streets, you will come across numerous churches and other architectural and cultural sites. Overnight in port. (B, L) Day 9 Thu: Makarska-Pucisca-Omis Early departure towards Pučišća, a typical Mediterranean place, situated on the northern side of the Brač island at the bottom of the deep bay. There is a possibility of visiting a stone-masonry workshop, one of the few stone masonry workshops left in Europe. We continue to Omiš, a picturesque town surrounded with steep rocky mountain cliffs, where the river Cetina flows into the Adriatic sea, ideal for river rafting on the Cetina river. Overnight in port. (B, L) Day 10 Fri: Omis-Split Departure for our last destination, the town of Split, a city under UNESCO protection famous for its old city center, 1700 year old Diocletian's palace. Upon arrival we recommend to join our guided tour of Split with an English speaking guide. Overnight in Split. Day 1 Wed: Zagreb Arrive in Zagreb and transfer to hotel for overnight. (D) Day 2 Thu: Zagreb Morning city tour of Zagreb includes walk through the historic Upper Town, where, among other sites, visit the St. Mark's Church, the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the Lotrščak tower. Overnight in Zagreb. (B) Day 3 Fri: Zagreb-Plitvice Lakes-Opatija Morning departure towards the spectacular Plitvice National Park, consisting of 16 lakes, connected with a series of waterfalls. An environment where Karl May movies were made. Walking shoes are essential for our 3 hour walk in this wonderful environment and enjoy a boat ride on the emerald green Kozjak Lake and ride the street train back to the entrance. Drive to Opatija for overnight. (B) Day 4 Sat: Opatija-Krk Island Morning guided tour of Opatija, Take a stroll along the seafront, visit the park and the oldest hotel on the Adriatic coast - Kvarner (1884). Transfer of the luggage will be organised before departure at 13:00. Lunch on board followed by a swim stop in the crystal clear sea on route to Krk island the largest of the Croatian islands. (B, L) Day 5 Tue: Bled-Postojna & Predjama Castle-Rovinj Morning head towards Croatia and stop at the Postojna Caves. (B) Day 6 Wed: Rovinj-Istria-Rovinj Start the day with sightseeing of the most romantic towns in Istria - Rovinj. (B, L, D) Day 8 Fri: Plitvice Lakes-Split Enjoy the evergreen woods and lakes of the oldest Croatian national park. The journey then continues towards Split for a short evening walk through the UNESCO World Heritage site, the largest city on the Adriatic coast. On our walking tour we explore Diocletian's Palace and to Grgur Ninski Statue, the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St Domnius. A farewell dinner in a typical Dalmatian restaurant - Konoba. (D) Day 10 Sun: Split-Korcula Early morning departure towards Korcula island best known as the birthplace of Marco Polo. Stop for lunch in one of the secluded bays en route. Early afternoon arrival in Korcula followed by a guided walking tour of this enchanting town with fortified walls. On this Island you can find more legends, tales and monuments than anywhere else while you wander along the herringbone pattern streets. Bol is a typical fishermen’s town turned into a popular tourist destination. Day 1 Sat: Split Transfer from Split airport to the Split harbour. Check in from 14.00 onwards. After settling, enjoy a guided tour of the city (not possible for late arrivals). Split is a historic town under UNESCO protection. One will find an abundance of Roman architecture - of special interest is the magnificent Diocletian palace, once inhabited by the Roman emperor. Day 1 Sat: Dubrovnik Transfer from Dubrovnik airport to Gruž Harbour for check in from 14.00 onwards. Once settled in transfer to city gates for a guided tour of the city. Take the cable car from the Old Town to Srd Mountain to enjoy scenic views of the Walls and Elaphiti Islands. After the tour, transfer to the ship for a welcome meet and greet cocktail on board. Overnight in Dubrovnik. (D) Day 2 Sun: Dubrovnik-Slano/Ston Departure to a small village called Slano on the mainland. Enjoy the magic scenery during breakfast as the ship cruises around Dubrovnik before continuing to one of the Elaphiti islands for a swim stop. Afternoon arrival in Slano, a peaceful fishermen's village famous for its oysters. After exploring the town a short walk leads to an oyster farm learn about oysters and have a delicious treat. Time at leisure for dinner and return transfer to ship for overnight. (B, L) Day 3 Mon: Slano-Mljet Next morning we head further north to the Island of Mljet. Join the cruise manager for a stroll to the famous salt lakes in the Mljet National Park and enjoy the boat ride to the St Mary Isle to visit an ancient monastery, an old abbey and a Church dating back to the 12th Century. Dinner on board and overnight in port Polaca or Pomena. (B, L, D) Day 4 Tue: Mljet-Korcula Early morning departure towards the Korcula Island. Stop for lunch in one of the secluded bays en route. Afternoon arrival in Korcula followed by a guided walking tour of this enchanting town surrounded by walls. Optional excursion to small village near Korcula for typical Dalmatian dinner and to learn about the history and traditional way of living. Overnight in Korcula. (B, L) Day 5 Wed: Korcula-Vis Continue to the island of Vis, known as “the Mediterranean as it once was” making it really interesting to visit. Try some exquisite wine sorts in one of the Vis traditional wineries. If interested, visit the remains of the Roman thermal Place or simply take a walk enjoying the views of the beautiful Villae Rusticae situated along the waterfront. Overnight in the port of Vis. (B, L) Day 6 Thu: Vis-Biševo (Blue Cave)-Hvar Early in the morning cruise towards small island Biševo to visit the Blue cave, a magnificent natural phenomenon (Weather conditions permitting). Its fortresses are silent stone reminders of the power and might of the infamous pirates who once made their homes and fortunes here. After a short walking tour board a small boat and sail into Cetina River Canyon, a protected nature area. Continue to Radman Mills for a local specialty snack. Return to Omis and your boat, and set sail during lunch. Upon arrival to Split, take a guided tour of the port, the sea front promenade, and Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace. The historical centre of the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your evening is free in Split. (B, L)

Day 5 Wed: Split-Bol-Hvar Stop in Bol, a small town on island Brac, for a swim at the Golden Horn. Enjoy the 1740-foot-long golden pebble beach said to be the best in Croatia. It is unique in that it changes shape and position depending on the winds. Return to your boat for lunch, then head to Hvar, one of the most popular islands in the Adriatic, and a meeting point for the international jetset. The “Croatian Madeira” is also one of the longest islands stretching along the shores of Croatia. A sightseeing tour of Hvar town shows you the first public theatre in Europe (older than Shakespeare’s theatre in the UK), the Franciscan Monastery and many more historical sights. Your evening is free to explore Hvar on your own. (B, L) Note: Due to the limited capacity of the Hvar harbour (during peak season in July and August) port of call can be substituted for Stari Grad/Jelsa. Traditional Cruises The traditional sailing boats have been sailing the Adriatic Sea for years. Originally popular with youngsters, now appealing to the young as well as the young at heart. All you need is a few T-shirts and a swimming costume for a perfect Croatia sailing holiday.
