NADAL, ZVEREV, EDMUND FACE FAMILIAR FOES IN QUARTER-FINALS •

Familiar foes will face off again in Friday’s quarter-finals at the Mutua Madrid Open, highlighted by the record-setting Rafael Nadal against World No. 7 Dominic Thiem. Nadal has winning streaks of 14 matches and 30 sets overall, as well as 21 matches and 50 sets on clay. The Spaniard passed John McEnroe on Thursday for the longest single-surface set streak in the Open Era. He also tied a personal-best for consecutive sets won overall. Nadal swept 30 straight sets in 2012 as well.

Thiem is the last man to win a set and a match against Nadal on clay, doing so 19 May 2017 in the Rome quarter-finals. Nadal is 2-0 against Thiem since then, dropping only nine games in five sets. All eight of Nadal and Thiem’s prior meetings came on clay with the World No. 1 leading the FedEx ATP Head2Head 6-2. Nadal defeated Thiem 7-6(8), 6-4 in the 2017 Mutua Madrid Open final. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev and World No. 9 John Isner will meet in a rematch of the Miami final, won by Isner on 1 April. Neither player has had their serve broken in Madrid. Zverev has broken his opponents six times, while Isner has yet to earn a break point with his return, posting a 4-1 record in tiebreakers to reach the quarter-finals. Isner is 2-3 in tiebreakers against Zverev.

Three unseeded players advanced to the Madrid quarter-finals, including No. 1 Brit Kyle Edmund and #NextGenATP star Denis Shapovalov. They meet Friday for the fifth time, representing 9% of the 19-year-old Shapovalov’s 54 tour-level matches. Their meetings will have spanned all three surfaces and all five tour levels. Each man owns two wins in their FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry. Shapovalov broke one of Nadal’s records and is the youngest quarter-finalist in tournament history.

World No. 8 Kevin Anderson plays his 11th ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final against a man playing his first, Dusan Lajovic. Anderson is 0-10 in ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals, but the 95th-ranked Lajovic will be his lowest-ranked opponent at this stage and level. Lajovic is the first qualifier to reach the Madrid quarter-finals since Santiago Giraldo in 2014. He is bidding to become the second qualifier to reach the semi-finals in tournament history, joining Fabrice Santoro in 2002.

NADAL NEARS 34-YEAR-OLD RECORD, CANADIANS CLASH ON DAY 5 •

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal has won 13 matches and 28 sets in a row overall, as well as 20 matches and 48 sets in a row on clay. That last number could put Nadal in the record books Thursday when the five-time champion faces No. 13 seed Diego Schwartzman. If Nadal defeats Schwartzman in straight sets, he will pass John McEnroe for the longest set streak on any surface in the Open Era. McEnroe swept 49 straight sets on carpet in 1984, including 10 to win the Madrid Indoor Open title.

Only one Spaniard, Nadal, is in the third round -- fewest in the 17-year history of the Mutua Madrid Open. Seven of the Top 8 seeds remain, including No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem, who will meet 21year-old Borna Coric in Estadio 3. Thiem is the last man to win a set and a match against Nadal on clay. The Austrian avenged his loss in last year’s Madrid final by beating Nadal 6-4, 6-3 in the Rome quarter-finals on 19 May 2017. Thiem and Nadal could clash again in Friday’s quarter-finals.

Top 2 Canadians Milos Raonic and Denis Shapovalov will meet for the first time. Shapovalov has reached a new career-high ranking seven times this season, but he’s still looking up at Raonic, who returned to the Top 20 last week. Shapovalov is seeking the second ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal of his career. As an 18-year-old, Shapovalov upset Nadal last August in Montreal and became the youngest ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finalist and semi-finalist since the series started in 1990.

RUTHLESS RAFA MEETS MONFILS WITH 46-SET STREAK ON LINE •

Five-time champion Rafael Nadal begins his title defense at the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday against fellow 31-year-old Gael Monfils. The World No. 1 has won 19 matches and 46 sets in a row on clay, scoring his 11th Monte-Carlo and 11th Barcelona titles along the way. Nadal’s 46-set streak is an Open Era record on clay and three shy of the mark on any surface. John McEnroe swept 49 straight sets on carpet in 1984, including 10 to win the Madrid Indoor Open.

Also in second-round action are No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev and No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem, who’ve each won 21 matches this season. They entered the week tied with No. 4 seed Juan Martin del Potro for the most victories on the ATP World Tour in 2018. Two-time champion and No. 10 seed Novak Djokovic looks to build off the biggest win of his comeback from a right elbow injury. Djokovic beat World No. 20 Kei Nishikori on Monday and meets Kyle Edmund on Wednesday.

Nadal is one of five Spaniards through to the second round, including Madrid resident Feliciano Lopez. The 36-year-old has played in all 17 editions of the Mutua Madrid Open, beginning with the indoor hard-court event in 2002 and continuing through its move to clay in 2009. Lopez’ streak, however, will end next May when he returns to Madrid as the tournament director. In the meantime, Lopez seeks a spot in the third round for the eighth time against No. 13 seed Diego Schwartzman

VERDASCO, FOGNINI, HAASE SEEK MILESTONE WINS IN MADRID •

More than a first-round victory is on the line for Fernando Verdasco, Fabio Fognini and Robin Haase at the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday. Verdasco, appearing at his hometown event for the 16th straight year, goes for his 500th win against Paolo Lorenzi, who is making his Madrid debut at the age of 36. Fognini (299 wins) and Haase (199 wins) seek career milestones at 12 pm on Pista 4 and Pista 5 respectively. Fognini faces Leonardo Mayer and Haase challenges Hyeon Chung.

Verdasco is one of five Spaniards in singles action, joining No. 9 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, No. 11 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Carreno Busta looks to avenge his season-opening loss to Borna Coric at Doha, where the Spaniard held three match points. Garcia-Lopez seeks his first win in six tries against American Ryan Harrison.

While the first round concludes on Tuesday, the second round commences with matches featuring No. 3 seed Grigor Dimitrov and No. 4 seed Juan Martin del Potro. Dimitrov faces fellow former World No. 3 Milos Raonic, who is on a six-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents. Del Potro returns for his first match in nearly six weeks against Damir Dzumhur. The Argentine is 21-4 in 2018 and tied with Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem for the most wins on tour this season.

2-TIME CHAMP DJOKOVIC MEETS FORMER FINALIST NISHIKORI ON MONDAY •

Two players with stellar records in Madrid will collide in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Monday, when No. 10 seed and two-time champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia faces Kei Nishikori of Japan. Djokovic, who hoisted the singles trophy in 2011 and 2016, has an excellent 23-7 win-loss record at the event. Not to be denied, 2014 finalist Nishikori has a splendid 16-5 win-loss record in Madrid, having reached the quarter-finals or better for the last five years. Nishikori won two of their first three meetings, but since the Japanese player’s upset win over Djokovic in the 2014 U.S. Open semi-finals, the Serb has reeled off ten straight wins, including in the semi-finals here in 2016.

Preceding Djokovic and Nishikori on Manolo Santana Court will be the all-French affair between No. 15 seed Lucas Pouille and Benoit Paire. Pouille has emerged victorious in all three of their Tourlevel encounters, including a quarter-final win earlier this year at Montpellier, en route to Pouille’s only singles title of the year up to this point. Three other Frenchmen are also in first-round action on Monday: Gael Monfils meets qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, Adrian Mannarino takes on No. 13 seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, and Julien Benneteau battles Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Two Spaniards will feature in the night match in the Spanish capital when Feliciano Lopez squares off against wild card Pablo Andujar. By taking the court, 36-year-old Lopez will maintain his feat of having played in every edition of the Mutua Madrid Open; this will be his 17th appearance, and he has reached the quarter-finals four times. Meanwhile, Andujar is enjoying a career resurgence as he rebounds from injury problems. Having dipped as low as No. 1824 in February, Andujar is already back into the Top 150, significantly due to winning the Marrakech title last month. Ranked No. 355 at the time, Andujar became the lowest-ranked player to win a singles title since 1998.

Monday’s docket also has two-time Madrid quarter-finalist Milos Raonic of Canada playing Argentine qualifier Nicolas Kicker, Russian Karen Khachanov meeting Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic, wild card Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain facing qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan, and Germany’s Mischa Zverev up against qualifier Federico Delbonis of Argentina.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN MADRID 1) Fantastic Field: Monte-Carlo champion Rafael Nadal headlines a Madrid field that features 17 of the Top 20 players. Seven different men have captured the last seven ATP Masters 1000 titles for the first time since 2009 Montreal through 2010 Monte-Carlo. Not since 2001 Hamburg through 2002 Monte-Carlo have eight different players won eight ATP Masters 1000 events in succession. 2) One of a Kind: Nadal has won 19 matches and 46 sets in a row on clay, including his 10th Roland Garros, 11th Monte-Carlo and 11th Barcelona titles. The Spaniard’s 46-set streak is an Open Era record on clay and three shy of the mark on any surface, set by John McEnroe on carpet in 1984. 3) Spaniard’s Standards: Nadal is 401-35 on clay with an ATP-best win percentage of 0.920. Since Madrid moved to clay in 2009, Nadal is 34-5 at Caja Magica (0.872). He’s won five Madrid titles overall, including his only indoor hard-court championship in 2005. Nadal needs a sixth Madrid title this week to remain World No. 1. Otherwise, Roger Federer will return to the top spot on 14 May. 4) No. 1 Contender: World No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro returns to the tour this week for the first time since John Isner ended his 15-match win streak in the Miami semi-finals on 30 March. The Argentine is 21-4 this season, highlighted by his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells. Del Potro has not reached a clay-court semi-final since doing so on the blue clay at 2012 Madrid. 5) Comeback Trail: Two-time Madrid champion Novak Djokovic is 5-5 in 2018 as he continues his comeback from a right elbow injury. Djokovic remains responsible for 20% of Nadal’s losses on clay, earning the first of seven clay-court victories over his Spanish rival in the 2011 Madrid final. 6) Close Calls: Djokovic will meet 2014 Madrid finalist Kei Nishikori in the first round. Nishikori is 0-4 lifetime in ATP Masters 1000 finals. While Mardy Fish also went 0-4 in ATP Masters 1000 finals, only former World No. 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov played more finals without a title at this level (0-5). 7) Mastering 1000s: World No. 3 Alexander Zverev won ATP Masters 1000 titles in Rome and Montreal, then reached another final in Miami, all before his 21st birthday on 20 April. The #NextGenATP superstar beat Djokovic for the Rome title and Federer for the Montreal title in 2017. 8) Greek Freak: Zverev could face fellow #NextGenATP player Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round. Tsitsipas, a former World No. 1 junior like Zverev, broke into the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings after reaching his first final at Barcelona. He was rewarded with a wild card into Madrid. 9) Los Madrileños: Familiar faces Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco are also in the draw. Lopez has played in all 17 editions of the Mutua Madrid Open, while Verdasco only missed the first. Verdasco is one win shy of 500 victories for his career. Lopez is not far behind with 462 wins. 10) 40-Love: Bob and Mike Bryan, who turned 40 on 29 April, have reached all three ATP Masters 1000 doubles finals thus far this season. They’ve won 16 of their last 18 ATP Masters 1000 finals overall, including Miami and Monte-Carlo in 2018. The Bryans are five-time Madrid champions.
