Cathedral staff covering Sunday services around the Diocese A letter from Canon Clare MacLaren Dear Friends, Aware that many parishes are struggling to cover Sunday services, the Dean, Canon Steven and myself have agreed that (except when we are “in residence” at the Cathedral) we should each make ourselves available on one Sunday a month to cover services elsewhere. When Canon Jean is back from her sabbatical, it may be that she will be willing to add her availability to it too. http://mailchi.mp/7562794c9383/1umbk9046z

We are all “spoken for” in a number of parishes already between now and Christmas, but I have produced an online “booking sheet” which shows when there is a Sunday when one of us could be free to support you in the parishes. You can access the booking sheet by clicking here: http://bit.ly/2qaasXj how to fill in the form are there too!Instructions on As time goes on, we will add more dates, taking the list into 2018 – using the same link, so bookmark it on your computer, or keep it in a safe place, if you think you may want to use it in the future. Here’s hoping we can make the most of the technology and get this to work for us all! With every good wish, Clare
Supporting Persian Asylum Seekers & Refugees In light of the growing numbers of Iranian individuals converting to Christianity in the UK, and seeking asylum on the basis of their new religious faith, there is an increasing need for clergy and others to provide them with support. A small group in the Diocese is therefore exploring what types of pastoral and practical support are being provided by clergy and local churches to Persian refugees and asylum seekers. If you have already had some experience in working with Persian refugees and asylum seekers, we would love to hear what that has been like. We would also like to hear what training and/or guidance would help you in your work in this area. Please share your experiences, and direct your requests to: The Revd Gavin Wort Chair of Newcastle Diocese's Committee for InterFaith & Ethnic Relations Vicar of the Parish of the Holy Cross, Fenham Tel.: 0191 274 5580 Email:

education. These grants recognise the cost of having children of school or university education age and of helping them make the most of their education. In other words, children do not need to be at fee paying schools to qualify for this support. Grants may also be made to retired clergy and widows or widowers of clergy in the two dioceses with eligible dependent children in education. You should refer to the guidance notes for applicants if you are unsure whether you qualify. To those already in receipt of grants, we send a remittance advice with application forms for the next academic year attached. If you would like to apply for a grant for the first time, you can download an application pack in .PDF format from the clergy private area on our website www.lordcrewescharity.org.uk. Using this version, you can print off the forms, complete and sign them, and return them to us. Please note that the date at which the school year of your children is entered should be as of1st October 2017. The closing date for applications for 201718 is 30 June 2017. All applications must reach us by this date. You will then hear from us in either late August or early September 2017. Grants will be paid in two equal instalments, in September 2017 and March 2018.

Frances Ashton Charity Help for serving and retired members of the Clergy of the Church of England and widows/widowers thereof. Since 1747 Frances Ashton’s Charity has been helping those who spend their lives serving God and their parish. The Frances Ashton Charity will consider a modest grant for almost any purpose which is causing financial hardship. For example, we http://mailchi.mp/7562794c9383/1umbk9046z

could help with: • The cost of a new pair of glasses • A respite care break for a disabled family dependent • The cost of a family holiday • The cost of repairing a broken boiler Particular priorities for support include unforeseeable emergencies, medical or care needs for the applicant or their dependents. In some cases, the trustees may be able to help at any point during the year. There are a few exceptions where the Charity is unable to help, for example private education. If you are a serving or retired member of the clergy of the Church of England or the widow/widower of a member of the clergy who has passed away and you have a hardship, please ask us for an application form and the full guidance notes. St Hilda’s Trust Grants available Does your parish have plans to engage with children and young people? Is there a project you are struggling to get off the ground due to lack of funding? St Hilda’s Trust (Registered Charity No 500962) makes grants to organisations for charitable purposes, although those organisations need not necessarily be registered charities. The Trust’s main areas of concern within its overall objectives are children and young people who are disadvantaged in some way within the Diocese of Newcastle. Last year the trustees awarded £56,000 in grants to local organisations, parish and school projects, as well as major UK charities (where the funds benefited those in our Diocese). For example local lunch & holiday clubs, art & theatre workshops and community based initiatives are amongst the projects to have benefited. Grants usually range from £500 to £5,000. The trustees would welcome more applications from local parish projects. For further information and application forms, please contact: The Secretary, St Hilda’s Trust Church House, St John's Terrace North Shields, NE29 6HS Tel: 0191 270 4100 Email:

Affordable and Meaningful Funerals The cost of funerals has more than doubled in 10 years: an average basic funeral now costs just under £4,000. Funeral grants, meanwhile, are only for those on qualifying benefits, and only cover 35% of that cost. Joint working between Church Action on Poverty and the Quakers has produced some resources for those leading or helping people to plan funerals: A comprehensive booklet called ‘Planning an Affordable and Meaningful Funeral’ can be downloaded here. An A4 sheet ‘Top 10 Tips for Affordable & Meaningful Funerals’ is a great way to encourage people to think ahead and could be available at the back of every church. It can be downloaded here. The Quakers are also leading on the Fair Funerals Campaign, asking government to make a more realistic amount of money available to those on very low incomes, and calling on us to encourage our local funeral directors to sign the Fair Funerals Pledge (see: http://fairfuneralscampaign.org.uk/).
Donate clothes, shoes and other items at St George's Church, High Heaton. Alphonsi Solomon, a member of St George’s Church, High Heaton is planning a trip to Uganda this year and would be grateful for donations of children’s books (especially those specifically designed to help with reading skills), bibles, shoes, baby clothes/items, children’s clothes/items, adults' clothes and any surplus household items. Alphonsi has transport and is happy to pick items up from individuals if requested but it would be more helpful if you could take items to your church and he can then arrange collection from the secretary. Dear all, At the beginning of this year we launched the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) and Giving For Life across the diocese. Our feedback survey after the events show 65% of attendees asked are planning to use Giving For Life 48% plan to launch PGS this year with another 31% hoping to launch later than this year This is extremely positive news and we love there is so much interest so we wanted to give you a little update. As of our April statistics we had: 5 active parishes (Active parishes are where the parish is registered and at least one donor is giving through the scheme) We have 9 additional parishes registered (these will be waiting donors to return the gift forms or possibly for the parish to run their launch / giving programme) Outside of that we have 12 interested parishes who have requested resources / information in order to take to a PCC / standing committee. http://mailchi.mp/7562794c9383/1umbk9046z

A huge thank you and well done to everyone, we do genuinely believe PGS is a practical tool to help assist parishes with their financial management and the results will speak for themselves I’m sure! For those with questions or still deliberating please don’t hesitate to get in touch, if you are a parish wanting to register and want to discuss timings or how to launch we can assist with that and if you’re a donor with a form don’t forget to send it in! REVitalise Narrative Preaching With the Revd Jon Russell What did you preach about last Sunday? When Jesus is asked ‘who is my neighbour?’, he doesn’t explore the concept of the neighbour in the Old Testament, nor derive it from his doctrine of God. He says, ‘a certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves…’ and two thousand years later, we all remember the story that he told. Narrative Preaching is about ‘incarnating’ our preaching within story and image. This REVitalise session will introduce Narrative Preaching to those unfamiliar with what it can offer. PRAYER DIARY
NOVENA Novena – Nine days of prayer as part of the 'Thy Kingdom Come' prayer initiative. In Newcastle Diocese, the Novena prayer diary begins on Ascension and ends on Pentecost, with nine days in between. It mirrors the time when the disciples, along with Mary, Jesus' mother, and his brothers waited in prayer for the promised Holy Spirit. This year, 2017, thousands of Christians are joining in with the Archbishop's prayer initiative. You can also take part using the Novena prayer diary for Newcastle Diocese. http://mailchi.mp/7562794c9383/1umbk9046z
