Sunnier days ahead 2016 gained itself something of an infamous reputation for the number and calibre of stars and celebrities who departed. Many of us in school who celebrated the arrival of 2017 will therefore have looked forward with some relief to better days ahead: seeing our fantastic Y7s further embed themselves in the school; supporting Y9s in making crucial choices about future courses and helping our Y11s keep their hopes and aspirations high as they enter the home stretch for their important exams. And, of course, there would be the school production of High School Musical, the after-school activities, the plans to make to welcome our new Y7 intake in June, sporting fixtures to fulfil (including many cup finals), inter-house competitions to arrange, sports day to organise… so much to do. To say that Ofsted came as a surprise would be something of an understatement. While schools are never unprepared for ‘the phone call’, we were certainly unprepared for the outcome. Suddenly there were interviews with the Sheffield Star to conduct, letters to write, MPs to meet and a collective sense of disbelief to manage. That we have done so is testimony to two things: firstly, to the overwhelming support we have received from you—our community; secondly, to the strength and resilience of the staff I have the privilege to work with. I am humbled on a daily basis by the determination and tenacity they have shown in the face of our recent adversity. Having worked in schools for twenty-five years, I am completely

GRIT & POSITIVE ATTITUDE TO LEARNING

WORLD BOOK DAY 2 MARCH 2017

Y11 students are working hard as they gear up for their exams and we are proud to recognise them for their GRIT and very positive attitude towards learning. In addition, we also recognise them for being good citizens who contribute positively to the school community. Here are two great Nightingale This year Ecclesfield truly embraced the World Book Day spirit with various activities and events going on around school in order to help celebrate all things book related. Amongst other competitions on the day was the staff dress up – fiercely contended and deservedly won by Mrs Evans in the Maths department, the form quiz won by NCW and the get caught reading competition won by Hannah Kendrick and Charlie Day – Well done to all!

BRADFORD MEDIA MUSEUM In December, a group of Y7 and Y10 students visited the National Media Museum as part of their respective schemes of learning. Amongst other activities, the pupils watched an IMAX screening of a popular film and had a chance to explore the way in which media has changed and developed through the years with many opportunities to get hands-on with various different types of media. The kids had a great day and we were impressed with the way they conducted themselves in and around the museum. A massive thank you and well done to everyone involved.

We carried on the tradition of reading ‘The Ecco Story’ with pupils getting an instalment of a story based here in Ecclesfield school in each of their five periods throughout the day. This year the mystery was based around the dungeon and pupils were left in suspense wondering what would happen to the unfortunate character of Andrew whose curiosity had lead him to discover more about Ecclesfield’s dark past than he had anticipated. We also invited student volunteers from the University of Sheffield to come in and work with some of our marvellous Y7 and Y8 pupils – they were hugely impressed with the quality of the writing produced and with the behaviour of each and every one of the forty students they worked with. There was a brilliant buzz around school all day, and most importantly, it got us all talking about books! A massive thank you to our wonderful librarian for all of her hard work and for everyone who got involved throughout the day – we aim to make next year even bigger and better.

POP MATHS MARCH 2017

BLUE PETER BADGES FRANKLIN STUDENT

Saturday March 4th 2017 had us taking our largest contingent of mathematicians to Sheffield Hallam University’s Pop Maths event. We had four teams entered into the competition; two in KS3 and two in KS4. Schools from all over Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham took part competing to be the best. All of the teams did very well and enjoyed pitting their wits against the rest. One of our fantastic KS3 teams, consisting of five Y7s and one Y9 student, scored a great 15 out of 20 coming fifth in their competition. They beat some older more experienced teams in the area, answering questions based on ratios, shape and dates!

Our KS3 pupils from left to right are: Louis, Holly, Lucas, Alannah, Megan, Corey, Frazer, James, Lewis and Joe. Our KS4 teams also scored well with our team of Y11 students coming fifth again with an impressive 16 out of 20.

This superstar from Franklin has got two new Blue Peter badges (although she had to keep them well away from the teachers who kept wanting to try them on!) She is going above and beyond to work towards the prestigious Gold and we are with her every step of the way. She is even signing up to be an Ecco Volunteer which will help her along the way. Who else has achieved something they are immensely proud of? Let us know, no matter how big or small!

SCHOOL PRODUCTION HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

We have recently enjoyed an absolutely incredible three nights here at Ecclesfield thanks to the production of High School Musical. Our students have, as always, been a real credit to the school and it's wonderful to see them all enjoying themselves and working hard. Many people have commented that this could have been the best production yet - they just keep getting better!

Blue Arrow Recruitment and P & B Metal Components Ltd Apprenticeships Ecclessfield School have teamed up with Blue Arrow Recruitment and P & B Metal Components Ltd to develop some fantastic opportunities for our current Y11s to follow apprenticeships within their organisations. Successful candidates will go straight into employment with training when they leave school, working alongside an experienced team gaining first-hand skills and experience in each respective industry. Blue Arrow candidates will learn about all aspects within the recruitment industry, following a business administration qualification. Positions available with P & B Metal Components Ltd include manufacturing, mechanical maintenance and logistic operations apprenticeships, all following a two year NVQ diploma. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH November saw us team up with the Chapeltown & Burncross Neighbourhood Watch Team to try and help improve our local community. We are working together to consult with students to find out their views on their community to help identify areas of concern & areas in need of improvement. This could be anything from areas where students have experienced lots of litter, graffiti, vandalism or anti-social behaviour to areas that they do not feel safe in and so need improving. The information gained will help the Neighbourhood Watch Team in their work with Sheffield City Council and the Police to improve our community. If interested, contact [email protected]



ST SAVIOURS FOOD BANK & AGE UK HAMPER XMAS COLLECTIONS

Although it seems an age away now, we had a fantastic response to our food bank and hamper collections just before Christmas. We collected nearly 2000 items towards both collections, which were all greatly received by St Saviours and Age UK. Bluebell Smith from Age UK said “The hampers were very gratefully received by clients who struggle at Christmas more than ever. Most of the hampers were delivered door-to-door to our clients and we also used a selection of the hampers at a Christmas dinner for people who are lonely and isolated. The dinner took place on Christmas day and this really did make a huge difference to the eighty people that attended who would otherwise have spent the day alone. Some of the guests also really struggle financially so the hampers meant that they felt support all the way through the festive period as well as having a meal on the day. Recipients were so grateful for the support and passed on their thanks again and again!” The overall house winners, who collected the most items for the food bank collection were Turing who donated almost 250 items! A massive thanks goes out to all our students and wider community for their kindness in donating to the collections. It is fantastic to see that their generosity has had a real and direct impact to people in our community.


ECCLESFIELD PARK COMMUNITY GARDEN—VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Are you a gardener? Can you help other people to garden? Do you want to learn about gardening? Want to meet new friends? If you can answer Yes to any of these, then you could volunteer at the Ecclesfield Park Community Garden! #WeAreEcco The Community Garden is run by volunteers and works with local schools, community groups and the general public giving the opportunity to learn about and grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers; with numerous events and activities throughout the year to help raise awareness. THE COMMUNITY GARDEN IS OPEN: WED AND SAT 10AM TO 12 NOON Located in Ecclesfield Park between Ladycroft stream/bridge & Bowling Greens. CALLING ALL Y11s……. IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO SAY ‘YES’! The NCS programme is a government backed scheme offering a once in a lifetime opportunity that helps you build for work and life, while you take on new challenges and meet new friends. Four weeks of fun for only £50! Not only do you get a two week experience away from home with all your friends, but you gain further skills for work and life and it will look great on your CV. It is recognised by employers as it builds in all the skills that employers are looking for such as confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. As well as this NCS is also recognised by UCAS and if you are thinking of applying to university it will make your personal statement really stand out! COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The call has already gone out for students who want to give something back to their community. We have a number of projects planned for the upcoming term and are always looking for new inspiration by working with local partners in order to discover what our community needs. We want to create projects that will benefit people living in our local area and help create stronger relationships with our community. We cannot do it without your help! TEENTECH 2017 An intrepid group of Y8 students attended the TeenTech event at Donc a s te r R a c e c o u rs e recently. This event brings subject areas of science, technology and engineering to life, showcasing the wide range of career possibilities within the sector. Over 300 pupils from thirty different schools experienced hands-on exhibits & challenges run by leading business organisations, partnerships, companies and universities which create a very special experience for participants.

SWORD DANCERS SWASH BUCKLING PERFORMANCES

Over the Christmas period and into the New Year a small group of Ecclesfield students played their part in keeping an old local tradition alive, performing a sword dance with the Six Jolly Miner’s sword dancing team at the Chapeltown Christmas Fayre and at the Grenoside New Year celebrations. After weeks of practice the team put on a great show, receiving a fantastic response from onlookers. Their performance was so well received that they have already been booked to perform at next years Christmas Fayre! Sword dancing can trace its heritage back to the 1800s’s when sword dancing teams were made up of working men from the local area, most of whom were miners. AMRC TRAINING CENTRE VISITS

P & B METAL COMPONENTS LTD TALK CAREERS!

Y10 and Y11 Engineering students were given the VIP treatment at the Advanced Manufacturing and Research Centre in February. Students were allowed a behind the scenes peek at the amazing facilities available to AMRC students and were given an insight into the life of an AMRC apprentice. They were also given the chance to have a go at the tasks that prospective apprentices have to pass in order to study at the AMRC, which included making a model aeroplane!

A Representative from P & B Metal Components Ltd, from their Sheffield site, came into school recently to speak to our Y10 and Y11 Engineering students about the opportunities available working in the engineering industry. Students were able to learn about the processes involved in the design and manufacture of electrical switch components, and learned how you are never more than a few metres away from a product made my P & B Metal Components Ltd! P & B also brought one of their current female engineering apprentices into speak with the students to tell them what life is like as an apprentice and to work in the engineering industry. ECCO SNOWBOARDERS

Students were given the opportunity to learn to snowboard at the SnoZone in Castleford in January. Over three 2 hour lessons, the students learned how to master the twists and turns of snowboarding on the slopes. By the end of the lessons, all the group were signed off as competent on the slopes, so can now go back and snowboard at the SnoZone on their own! WHY NOT TRY A NEW SPORT THIS SUMMER?!?! Ecclesfield Bowling Club in Ecclesfield Park would love you to give crown green bowling a try this summer! Why not go down and have a go at their nine to sixteen year old, Saturday morning sessions. If you can’t make Saturdays, why not go and have a game at one of their ‘round robin’ events between 11am – 2.30pm on Sunday 23rd April, Sunday 21st May, Sunday 18th June, Sunday 16th July and Sunday 20th August. These sessions are open to all including pupils, parents, grandparents, greatgrandparents and even teachers!

ECCLESFIELD AWARDED SCHOOL CHAMPION STATUS BY THE NATIONAL CITIZEN SERVICE Ecclesfield are now amongst only 345 other schools across England to receive the NCS Champion School status. The award recognises our commitment to the National Citizen Service the UK’s flagship youth programme. ’Champion Schools’ are considered to be institutions that have excelled in promoting the programme and recruiting young people to take part over the last academic year. More than 300,000 students have graduated from NCS since 2011, with teachers reporting significant changes to schools and students as a result.

It is fantastic to have been awarded NCS Champion School status, as we really believe that the programme helps to equip students with the necessary attitudes and skills to succeed in life and work after school; some of which need to be experienced first-hand and cannot be taught in the classroom. Over the past three years, our number of student sign-ups has grown year-on-year, which reflects our commitment to promoting the benefits of NCS to students and parents. However, the biggest and most powerful endorsement has come from the participants themselves. The word is out amongst our past and present students about the amazing experiences available to those who ‘Say Yes’ - the chance to meet new friends, take on new challenges, do things and go to places they wouldn’t necessarily get the chance to in school or home life. It is this, coupled with the chance to make a difference in their local and wider community, that makes NCS the ideal vehicle to help develop students into fully participating members of society, enabling them to stand out from the crowd. In Y9 you get to learn about World War One. We looked at what the long and short term causes were and tried to identify the trigger. We also looked at what life was like for soldiers who fought in the trenches. Life was really bad for them and they got infected feet from standing in water and they had to put up with rats. Did you know some rats grew to the size of cats? We are currently investigating the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. Learning about the bad side of Nazi Germany is very shocking. Hitler sent people he did not know to be killed in extermination camps. He also used a secret police called the Gestapo and had a private army called the SA. By Ellie Denton and Erin Bramall

In our first term of Y10 were began learning about the American West. We looked at how the Native Americans lived in tipis and how they hunted the buffalo. The buffalo was key to their survival. Native Americans were warriors and fought in many battles against the U.S army. This was because the Government promised the Indians that some of their land would be protected from travellers going west, but they did not stick to this. The Indians kept getting pushed into reservations. This ended the traditional way of life for the Indians. By Ellie Denton and Erin Bramall


HAWORTH VISIT—YEAR 11

Team MFL have just returned from a fantastic weekend away in Haworth with seventy Y11 students. Hard work and GRIT were in abundance as we worked up until late and started again bright and early. Well done to the amazing students who came with a positive attitude and the real desire to learn. Another thanks to Mrs Goulden and the MFL team for making it possible - it could not happen without you!

Well done to everyone who has had 98% (outstanding) attendance this year. You’ve pulled yourselves out of bed even on those days when you might have had a sniffle and you’ve got yourselves into school on those cold, dark days. A particular well done to those 323 students (amazing!) with 100% attendance all year. This is truly amazing and we challenge you to make it to the end of the year with 100%. We held a special assembly for these students to give them the recognition deserved and to award them all with a little chocolate treat. Fully deserved and let’s keep it up.

BBC SCHOOL REPORT Students from Ecclesfield School have recently been taking part in an incredibly exciting project, run in partnership with the BBC. The BBC School Report gives young people the opportunity to engage with local and national news stories, stepping into the shoes of a professional reporter! A group of enthusiastic Year 8 volunteers embarked on this challenging project, which involved choosing topical issues, conducting interviews and constructing engaging and accurate news reports. These reports are then uploaded to our official news website, where there is a possibility of certain reports being selected and shared by the BBC on National News Day (15th March). Our year 8 volunteers split into several groups, each focussing on their own stories, many of which are pertinent to the lives of our young reporters. For instance, one group have chosen the sensitive topic of teen suicide, following on from the success of the #BoysDoCry campaign. They interviewed several members of staff around the school to gather a broad insight into their topic. Other groups took similar approaches and unearthed some interesting opinions on issues such as cyberbullying, animal welfare, and more local news stories such as sports around Ecclesfield School. ECCLESFIELD STUDENTS SPRING INTO ACTION!

Volunteers from Y7 to Y9 came together at the end of March, to help clean up our community. They took part in a community clean up as part of the Great British Spring Clean. Their event was the first in a series of community clean ups organised by Chapeltown Forum. Students helped collected litter and rubbish from around the streets surrounding the school and from the bus stop across the road from school. They collected over 20 bags of litter in total, which has made a visible difference to the local environment. There is still some litter to collect from the surrounding area, and the students are up for the challenge and they have all volunteered to go out again during the summer term! Thank you to all the students, staff and parents who took part in the event. Your hard work has made a real difference to our community!

Y8 BOYS’ FOOTBALL

Foreword by Miss Podlaski, Curriculum Leader A fantastic half term in the PE department this half term maintaining our high level of participation across the vast amount of clubs we offer. We are excited for the sun to come out and to start all of the summer activities again. There are all of the usual clubs running with some new clubs starting up - a girl’s Cricket club, American Football and we will be re-starting the Dance club with Chloe. Y7 BOYS’ FOOTBALL The Y7 boys’ football team are coming to the end of a great first season. They reached the last 64 in the FA Cup and were unfortunate to lose out. They lost in the semi final of the South Yorkshire Cup. They've won their regional league and have qualified for the league playoffs to be played after Easter. The boys played in the Sheffield Cup final on Saturday 1st of April. The game was a close affair with Ecco trying to move the ball quickly to create chances and forge openings. The opening goal came as an Ecgbert’s defender misplaced a header back to the keeper and Harrison pounced on the error to slot home from close range. Ecgbert’s equaliser also came from a defensive error as Ecco failed to clear their lines. Rhys restored the lead for Ecco after a lovely phase of possession play. He struck the ball sweetly into the top corner from 25 metres to make it 2.1. Immediately, Ecgberts went down the other end and made it 2.2 after a ball into the box wasn't dealt with. Ecco then had lots of good possession and with extra time only a couple of minutes away a great bit of play led to a good cross to Ben who placed the ball into the net to seal the victory and the Cup for Ecco.

After Easter the league finals will be played and the lads will look to bring back their 2nd title of the season. Mr G Cambell, Teacher PE

ESFA CUP The boys played really well in the nationwide competition and finished in the last 32 teams in all of England. Sheffield Schools’ League Ecclesfield Y8 boys are unbeaten in the league and are currently 2nd in the top division on goal difference to Westfield School. One more win against Tapton school next week could see them crowned League champions. South Yorkshire Schools Cup The lads played the Semi-Finals of this famous competition at home against Westfield School and finished in the top four in South Yorkshire. The scorers Sam 2 Connor Elliot 2 Ben Finnlay 2 Aston Game started with an early goal from Ecclesfield and then Forge Valley began to put pressure on Ecclesfield who conceded a goal to make the score one a piece. The more Ecclesfield kept possession of the ball the more their confidence grew and the goals kept coming in — set pieces and volleys— Sam hit the ball from 25 metres to score!

Y9 BOYS’ FOOTBALL

ZUMBA

The Y9 boys went on to the South Yorkshire Cup Semi-Final and lost 3-0 at home to Wickersley. It was a very tight game - in the first sixty minutes and not much between the two teams. Ecclesfield went 1-0 down and pushed for an equaliser unfortunately with this happening we got caught out at the back and ended up conceding another two. The boys have had a great cup run and losing to the defending cup champions is not a bad way to bow out. There are two league games left, both away at Newfield and Notre Dame respectively. We are looking to end the season on a high.

We had a fantastic response to the Zumba sessions that we have been putting on. Really impressed with the amount of girls who have been turning up to our after school Zumba class on a Thursday. If you want to come along, get involved and get your shimmy on… you are more than welcome to join us. The sessions run from about 3.15pm—4.15pm on Thursdays after school.

Y10 BOYS’ FOOTBALL

This term the Y10 football team have put in some impressive performances. Although the boys were knocked out of the South Yorkshire cup at the hands of Westfield they were able to successfully navigate their way to the Sheffield Cup final for the second successive year. 'The Y10 Boys football team won a dramatic penalty shoot out (4-3) over All Saints recently. The teams were inseparable after extra time with both teams locked at 3 - 3. Some fantastic saves by Ryan kept the boys in the game late on and two fantastic saves secured Ryan as Ecclesfield’s man of the match. Well done boys!' Miss R Podlaski, Curriculum Leader PE

NETBALL CLUB We have had a fantastic netball season this year with more girls coming along week in week out than ever. All the girls have made so much progress and are always keen to play whether at practice or in matches. We will be taking the girls to watch a super league professional fixture next half term. We had a break through with the Y8 squad this year coming fourth in the Sheffield Schools’ Federation league (by only one goal in the third / fourth playoff), an absolutely fantastic achievement and well deserved by all the girls. Well done!

TRAMPOLINING CLUB Trampolining is as strong as ever, we still have a steady flow of participants to both sessions each week. We had some great success at the Sheffield Trampolining Competition in the form of Millie who was crowned U13 Closed Sheffield champion, well done Millie, we are all really proud of you. HANDBALL CLUB This year handball club has really taken off, with a strong group of KS3 pupils regularly attending the club on a weekly basis. The delivery of the sessions are being assisted by SUFC community coaches who have played the sport at a high level both nationally and overseas, this has seen the level of play at this club come on leaps and bounds. A Y7 and Y8 boys’ team recently competed in the Sheffield Handball Tournament, where they showed a great team ethic and real togetherness, whilst also displaying their excellent skill and knowledge of the sport. Over the next coming year, we are hoping to get a lot more fixtures with other schools across the city. If you would like to join this club come along on a Thursday after school in Gym 2 everybody is welcome to attend.

GIRLS’ FOOTBALL Fantastic season for our girls’ football, Y7 have been unbeaten until the final round of league matches this half term meaning they are second in the Sheffield League overall. Maddie has been a fantastic captain for the team and has demonstrated some prominent leadership skills throughout the season. Well done girls!

BASKETBALL Y7 boys made great progress this year, making the playoffs finals at the EIS in their first attempt. The boys finished second in Sheffield which is a great achievement. Well done boys.! Y8 boys also made remarkable progress by making it to the playoffs semi finals which they lost. However, finishing in the top four in Sheffield is a great achievement. Well done boys!

GCSE PE The Y11s are busy this week completing their practical exams ready for the moderation day. They have also been proactive in preparing for their theory exam on May 19th, a good number of students have taken up the opportunity to attend GCSE PE revision sessions on a Monday after school in S108. It’s not too late to come along.

ECCO SPORTS LEADERS The Ecco sports leaders have been busy volunteering at a number of primary events. They have helped out at the primary basketball and sportshall athletics events in the last half term and are due to support the KS2 dodgeball event shortly.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD The Duke of Edinburgh Award is well underway now and our cohort have been developing their camp craft skills and have also been placed into their expedition teams. The pupils have also made a massive effort to undertake lots of different volunteering activities in the local community and within school. Our expeditions to both Derbyshire and Wales are both on the horizon and DofE sessions will now be focussing on developing map reading and navigational skills. Miss R Podlaski, Curriculum Leader PE
