1. Changes to the Canadian Work Permit
application process As of May 2013, paper applications for Canadian work permits are now processed by the Canada Visa Application Centre (VAC) in London. If you are placing a paper application, you will need to submit your application in person or by mail to the following address: Canada Visa Application Centre in London The Battleship Building 179 Harrow Road London W2 6NB UK Applications can also be placed online at www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/applyhow.asp. While it is still possible to place applications in person at the Visa Office of the Canadian High Commission in London (Wednesday’s only from 8:00am to 10:30am), applications lodged in this way will take longer to process. It is possible to work in Canada for up to 4 years on a Work Permit. To apply, you need to have a written job offer from an employer in Canada, as well as a positive labour market opinion (LMO) issued to the prospective employer to confirm that the employer has permission to hire a foreign worker for this job. You must also meet certain criteria including health and character requirements and provide proof of sufficient funds. Any Irish citizen granted citizenship through naturalisation must apply to retain their Irish citizenship if they reside abroad. Naturalised Irish citizens who are resident abroad may risk having their citizenship revoked by the Minister for Justice and Equality under Section 19 of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956, after a period of seven years if they do not register annually to retain this. To register to retain your citizenship, download form 5 from the Irish Naturalisation & Immigration Service (INIS) website www.inis.gov.ie or click here.
