FIRST FRIDAY LETTER: DEC. 4, 2015 LEWIS-CLARK STATE COLLEGE
Dear friends,
As we enter the final month of fall semester at Lewis-Clark State College I trust each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you join me in anticipation of the holidays ahead. LCSC has much to be thankful for this holiday season. What quickly comes to mind is a recent visit from author and distinguished alumnus Dr. Milton Snyder. Milt, whose most recent book is titled “The Third Battle of Manassas: Managing Change and Growth in a Suburban Virginia School District,” graduated from the Northern Idaho College of Education (now LCSC) in 1951. He went on to serve in the Korean War, obtain degrees from the University of Washington and Alliant International University, and spend his career in public education, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. The Idaho native was honored with the LCSC Alumni Association’s Marion Shinn Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. Throughout the years, Milt has been a great friend and generous supporter of LCSC, and on behalf of the college it is my pleasure to thank him yet again. Speaking of friends of the college, I feel somewhat remiss for not having mentioned in a previous letter the departure of longtime vice president for finance and administration Chet Herbst. Chet left LCSC after 14 years of exemplary service when he accepted the position of chief financial officer for the Idaho State Board of Education, in October. The State Board could not have found a better qualified or just plain better person, and I know all of campus joins me in wishing him well. Our college is very fortunate that Ron Smith, who served as LCSC’s vice president for finance and administration from 2004-2006, has agreed to serve in that position on an interim basis while we conduct a national search. In other news from November, Joni Mina was appointed division chair of LCSC’s Business Technology & Service Division. A BTS faculty member since 2003, Joni brings nearly 30 years of legal services experience to the position. She’ll now oversee the division’s 13 top-notch programs. We congratulate Joni on this appointment and know she’ll do a great job. Every month seems to be a good month for our athletic programs and November was no different as our men’s cross country team placed sixth and our women 16th at the NAIA National Championships held in Charlotte, N.C. Our basketball teams, as usual, are also off to solid starts with the men holding a perfect record at 9-0 and the women standing strong at 7-2. We wish them both and all of our teams the best of luck this season. On a final note, the LC Cares Committee is hosting its third annual LC Cares Food and Toy Drive this holiday season and I encourage faculty, staff, students, and community members to join the cause. Donation boxes have been placed in all buildings across campus, and gifts of nonperishable food and new (unwrapped) toys are accepted. On Dec. 18, the donated items will be delivered to the Community Action Partnership, the YWCA, and the Asotin Food Bank. For more information call 208-792-2240.
