Inside the USF/St. Ambrose Series

Head Coach Joe Curry

USF and St. Ambrose meet for the 19th time overall and for the 14th straight year. The Bees lead the all-time series 12-6. St. Ambrose holds a 6-3 lead both at ATI Field and on its home field in Davenport, Iowa. Last year in Davenport, St. Ambrose came away with a 35-20 victory. That followed a 21-10 USF decision at ATI Field in 2011. The teams met for the first time in the opening round of the 1987 NAIA Playoffs. USF, in only its second year of intercollegiate football, lost 21-3 in Joliet. USF won four straight matchups from 1988-91 before St. Ambrose won 10 in a row from 2000-2009. St. Ambrose’s 42-0 victory in 2007 marked the last time USF has been shut out. Since then, the Saints have registered points in 72 straight contests. Only two of the last 14 meetings (St. Ambrose 31-30 in 2009, USF 27-24 in 2010) have been decided by seven points or fewer.

USF has scored 104 of its 297 points (35%) in the fourth quarter, more than in any other period (41-89-63-104). The Saints have put points on the board in the final stanza in every game this season and until last week had scored at least one touchdown in the fourth quarter in each contest. USF was held to a field goal last Saturday at Siena Heights.

Within the Ranks USF is winless in six games against top-25 opponents in two seasons under head coach Joe Curry. After going 0-4 a year ago, the Saints fell earlier this fall to No. 5 Saint Xavier (37-25 at ATI Field on Sept. 28) and No. 4 Saint Francis (Ind.) (37-28 at ATI Field on Oct. 19). The Saints’ last victory over a nationally-ranked foe came in the opening round of the 2011 NAIA playoffs when they toppled No. 6 Morningside 21-17 in Sioux City, Iowa. USF’s most recent win over a top-25 opponent at ATI Field occurred the previous week in a 21-10 decision over No. 17 St. Ambrose in the Saints’ 2011 regular-season finale.

Torrence a Top Target Junior WR Troy Torrence ranks fourth in the NAIA with 926 yards receiving and stands 11th with 54 receptions. His 926 yards are the second-most in a season in USF history, 46 shy of the school record (Lexus Jackson in 2011). Torrence’s nine TD receptions place him in a third-place tie on the Saints’ season performance chart, while his 54 catches tie him for fourth. Among the 19 NAIA players who have caught at least 50 passes, Torrence boasts the second-highest average per reception (17.1). Torrence has eclipsed the 100-yard mark on three occasions this season, including a 243-yard effort against Saint Xavier (Sept. 28) that stands as the third-highest singlegame total in the NAIA this fall. He has logged an average of 102.9 yards per contest.

Show of Hands Twelve different Saints have caught a pass this season and nine have had at least one touchdown reception. Four different receivers have combined for eight 100-yard efforts thus far in 2013, and five different players have combined on 11 receptions covering 40 or more yards.

Something’s Got to Give USF stands fifth-best in the NAIA in opponent third-down conversion percentage (28.8%); St. Ambrose ranks fourth in the nation with a 50.0% success rate on third down.

USF Football Game Notes

vs. St. Ambrose (11/9/13)

Downward Trend

Low Turnover

For both USF and its opponents, scoring has come at more of a premium in the Saints’ last two contests. During the first seven games of the season, USF and its foes combined for an average of 66 points (average score: USF 37, opponents 29), but in the last two contests have averaged only 29 points (USF 19, opponents 10).

After scoring 59 points off 15 opponent turnovers in the season’s first five games, the Saints have scored only seven points off seven takeaways in the last four affairs.

Home of the Saints USF returns to ATI Field for only the fourth time in 10 games and for the first time in three weeks. The Saints are 1-2 on their home turf this fall with losses to Saint Xavier (37-25, Sept. 28) and Saint Francis (Ind.) (37-28, Oct. 19) sandwiched around a victory over Robert Morris (28-25, Oct. 12). USF needs a victory this week to avoid suffering its first losing season at ATI Field in four years (1-5 in 2009). Since the start of the 2010 campaign, the Saints have posted a 14-6 mark at ATI Field. USF has won its last three November home games (31-21 over Menlo in 2012, 21-10 over St. Ambrose in 2011, 35-3 over Quincy in 2010).

Milestones In Reach Senior WR Elliot Allen needs 28 all-purpose yards to reach 4,000 for his career. He is the Saints’ career leader in that category, as well as in kickoff and punt return yards (1,700, 501). He is also the school’s co-record holder for career receiving TDs (17). Senior RB Anthony Hubert is 18 yards shy of 2,000 yards rushing for his career. He ranks second all-time at USF in rushing touchdowns (20), total touchdowns (24) and scoring (144); fourth in rushing (1,982); and eighth in all-purpose yards (2,360).

Group Effort Without an individual ball carrier averaging more than 59 yards per game, the Saints as a team have rushed for 161 yards per contest. Senior QB E.J. White has gained a team-leading 485 yards (54/g), while senior RB Anthony Hubert leads the team with a 59-yard per game average (414 total yards). Junior RB Malik Norman ranks third on the team in total yards (286) and average per game (41). USF has rushed for at least 148 yards in six of nine games and has surpassed 200 yards on four occasions, highlighted by a 315-yard effort against Concordia. Six different Saints have rushed for a touchdown. White and Hubert each have four, followed by Norman with three, and junior WR Trace Wanless, sophomore WR Sheldon Magee and freshman WR Quest Young each with one.

Driving School Among USF’s 45 scoring drives this season, 19 – or 42% – have covered 70 or more yards. Of those 19 drives, seven have extended at least 80 yards. USF has scored on the first play of a possession on six occasions. The average yards traveled on those one-play drives: 57 yards.

Nonconference Call USF is 2-2 in nonconference play with victories over Olivet Nazarene and Lindenwood-Belleville, and setbacks against Trinity International and Saint Xavier. In their only previous nonconference game at ATI Field, the Saints dropped a 37-25 decision to Saint Xavier back on Sept. 28 During head coach Joe Curry’s two-year tenure, USF is 5-4 overall and 3-2 at home in nonconference action.

Double Digit Picks Senior CB Toney Brown made the 10th interception of his career last week at Siena Heights, becoming the sixth player in USF history to achieve the feat.

Get Out of Town USF finished the regular season with a 5-1 road record, giving the Saints only their third winning campaign away from home since 1991.

Punt, Pass and Kick With sophomore P Ryan Giachetti sidelined with an injury, senior QB E.J. White assumed the punting duties and averaged 34.0 yards on five kicks, one of which landed inside the Siena Heights’ 20-yard line.

Go for Three A victory over St. Ambrose would be the Saints’ third win in a row, matching the longest winning streak of head coach Joe Curry’s two-year tenure. USF won three straight games from Sept. 15-29 a year ago.

No Saint has carried the ball as many as 20 times in a game this year (White 19 vs. Olivet Nazarene, Hubert 19 vs. Robert Morris).

USF Football Game Notes

vs. St. Ambrose (11/9/13)

Go Deep

Opponents Find a Way

Senior QB E.J. White has thrown five touchdown passes of least 70 yards to three different receivers: junior WR Troy Torrence (73 vs. Saint Xavier, 72 vs. Marian), senior WR Elliot Allen (84 vs. Olivet Nazarene, 78 vs. Robert Morris) and freshman RB Jordon Mixson (70 vs. Concordia).

USF’s opponents have scored every way possible this season, with the exception of a 2-point conversion. In addition to 11 rushing touchdowns and nine passing TDs, opponents have scored on a kickoff return (Robert Morris), punt return (Saint Xavier), interception return (Lindenwood-Belleville), and fumble return (Olivet Nazarene), as well as a safety (Robert Morris) and a defensive PAT (Saint Xavier).

Lucky Seven A win over St. Ambrose would give the Saints seven victories for the third time in the past four years. Prior to that, USF produced only three seven-win campaigns in 24 seasons since the program’s inception in 1986.

Brown & Gold in the Black USF has owned a record of .500 or better for 37 of the past 38 weeks and has held a winning record in 33 of 38 weeks since Oct. 9, 2010.

Move the Chains

Half Way There

Junior WR Trace Wanless leads the team with 15 receptions (of 43 total) that have resulted in a first down and/or touchdown on third or fourth down plays.

USF has won 25 straight games, including four this season, when leading at halftime.

At the Polls USF improved its position in the national rankings for the second straight week as it climbed to No. 20 in this week’s NAIA Coaches’ Top-25 Poll. The Saints stood in the No. 23 position last week and the No. 24 slot two weeks ago. This week’s No. 20 ranking, which USF shared with Reinhardt, marked the Saints’ 27th appearance in the last 31 NAIA regularseason polls dating back to Nov. 1, 2010. USF has been included among the top-25 on seven occasions this year, standing between 17th and 25th.

The last time the Saints lost a game they led at the half was a 14-13 setback against McKendree on Nov. 1, 2008. USF led that contest 13-7 at the intermission.

Points on the Board USF has scored in 72 consecutive games since it was last shut out on Sept. 29, 2007, in a 42-0 loss to St. Ambrose.

Up Next USF closes out its regular season next Saturday when it entertains MSFA Mideast League rival Taylor at 1 p.m.

Punt Coverage USF features one of the top punt return specialists in the NAIA in senior WR Elliot Allen, who ranks 11th in the nation in punt return average (13.1) and 15th in total yards (170). On the other side of the ball, the Saints have held opposing punt return units to a 5.5-yard average on four runbacks over the last five games after allowing an average of 16.3 yards on seven returns in the season’s first four contests.

Trailing for most of the game, USF (2-1) took its only lead with 1:38 remaining in the contest when E.J. White found Dustin Greenwell in the corner of the end zone from 10 yards away to put the Saints on top 39-38. The Saints answered quickly on an 11yard TD completion from White to Trace Wanless less than two minutes later, then scored again when White hooked up with Troy Torrence from 14 yards away at the 5:44 mark. Both team’s offenses struggled early in the game. TIU scored the only points of the opening stanza on a 19-yard pass from Anderson to Cory Windle midway through the period. In the second quarter, USF sandwiched a White-toTorrence 4-yard TD pass play and a White-to-Wanless 6-yard strike around a 22-yard Carter field goal and a Chris Elliott 27-yard run to make the score 17-13 in favor of TIU at the half. The Trojans struck first in the second half on a 5-yard pass play from Anderson to Windle at the 6:31 mark of the third stanza. USF responded quickly again, this time when White completed a pass to Ryne Van Gennep, who dashed 43 yards to the end zone. Game #8 Summary & Stats – USF 20, Marian (Ind.) 6 INDIANAPOLIS – No. 24-ranked USF held Marian (Ind.) to a pair of field goals en route to a 20-6 win over the defending NAIA national champion Knights in Mid-States Football Association Mideast League play. The victory vaulted USF (5-3, 3-1 MSFA Mideast) into sole possession of first place in the MSFA Mideast League standings, one-half game ahead of Marian and Saint Francis (Ind.), which lost 28-24 to Robert Morris in other conference action. USF led 7-3 at halftime. After a scoreless first quarter, Marian put the first points on the board on Zach Sparks’ 26-yard field goal at the 9:26 mark. The Saints answered on their ensuing possession with a seven-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 27-yard scoring strike from E.J. White to Troy Torrence. USF scored the only points of the third quarter when Malik Norman found his way through the line for a 2-yard touchdown on the Saints’ opening possession of the second half to give them a 14-3 advantage. USF started the drive at the Marian 39-yard line following an interception by Mike Passo. The Saints increased their lead to 20-3 early in the fourth quarter when White and Torrence hooked up on a 72-yard touchdown completion. Marian made it a twopossession game with a Sparks 24-yard field goal with 8:58 remaining, but USF stymied the Knights on their final two drives to seal the victory. Passo collected 15 tackles, and Josh Mander made nine as the Saints held Marian (4-4, 2-1) without a touchdown for the first time since the 2007 campaign. Jeff Cascella and Joe Lyman were each credited with a pair of sacks, while Eric Davis had one. Torrence and White connected seven times on the day for 150 yards; White was 17-for-29 for 205 yards overall. Marian signal caller Joey Hecklinski was 20-of-43 for 185 yards. USF limited Marian’s Tevin Lake, the NAIA’s 15th-leading rusher entering the game, to 68 yards on 20 carries.

USF Football Game Notes

vs. St. Ambrose (11/9/13)

Game #9 Summary & Stats – USF 17, Siena Heights 13 ADRIAN, Mich. --- Ten unanswered second-half points and a late Jamal Graham interception secured No. 23-ranked USF’s fourth comeback win of the season and kept the Saints alone atop the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League standings with a 17-13 victory over a stingy Siena Heights squad. Boasting the nation’s eighth-best scoring defense (16.8 ppg) and the 12th-best unit overall (301.9 ypg), Siena Heights (4-5, 1-4 MSFA Mideast) held the Saints to a season-low 306 yards of offense. USF (6-3, 3-1) opened the scoring with E.J. White finding Troy Torrence over the middle for a 46-yard touchdown strike on the Saints’ second play from scrimmage on their second drive of the game with 10:14 remaining in the opening quarter. Siena Heights (4-5, 1-4) shut the door on the Saints the remainder of the half, while putting up 13 points of its own beginning with back-to-back 27- and 24-yard field goals by Victor Bodrie. The second one came after the first of two White interceptions on the day, giving Siena Heights the ball at USF’s 9-yard line. Siena Heights took the lead 13-7 one quarter later after driving 80 yards in eight plays with Burke Hart capping the series on a 1-yard burst up the middle at the 7:04 mark. The hosts had a chance to add to that advantage on their opening drive of the second half only to have Bodrie hit the right upright on a 34-yard field goal attempt. Bodrie’s miss and one on a potential sack of White on a third-and-6 play on USF’s next possession cost Siena Heights in the end. White escaped the probable doubledigit yardage loss Trace Wanless on an intermediate pass that Wanless spun and turned into a 43-yard touchdown and the eventual game-winning score. For White, it was his sixth completion in as many attempts on the 10-play, 80yard drive, which also saw the Saints convert three thirddown plays. Looking to add to its advantage in the fourth quarter, USF had two touchdowns called back by penalties on the same drive that saw Dustin Greenwell convert a key fourthand-1 play. The Saints eventually settled for a 38-yard field goal by freshman Jordan Patsch. USF then looked to put the game out of reach in the closing two minutes going for it on fourth-and-five from the Siena Heights 22-yard line. White, however, had his pass intercepted at the goal line by Fred Butler, who returned it 40 yards leaving Siena Heights with 97 seconds to drive 60 yards for the go-ahead score. The hosts picked up two first downs to get the ball to the St. Francis 36-yard line before Graham came up with an interception with 47 seconds to play. Jeff Cascella added to his top ten individual defensive rankings with one more sack and two more tackles for loss as part of a game-high eight tackles on the day for the Saints. White completed 22-of-31 passes for 231 yards to go along with a team-high 55 yards on the ground.
