From Way Up There

From Way Up There On May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr., left Earth in the Freedom 7 capsule, as part of the Mercury mission. His flight approximately 116 miles above the Earth, at a velocity of approximately 5,134 mph, lasted 15 minutes and 28 seconds and made him the first American in space. From a low orbit such as astronaut Shepard had, there would be many things that could be seen on Earth with the aid of only a pair of good binoculars or a telescope. Many pieces of the puzzle had to fit together just right to get the first American in space. Try decoding the following landmarks by doing the math problem for each letter. Then, see if you can fill in the continent where each of these landmarks would be found. I wonder if Alan Shepard could have seen any of these on his flight! a 1
