I’m proud to say that our programs and services are as vibrant as ever; our special events continue to receive fabulous support from the community; and our donors remain as generous as they ever have been. We’re truly blessed. Since our founding 26 years ago, the Foundation’s goal has been to raise charitable funding for Mount Carmel in the central Ohio community and allocate those funds to meet our communities’ needs. The stories in this issue show that we remain on target. Of course, we continue to rely on the generous deeds of donors like you to create and continue the programs you’ll read about in the pages that follow. On behalf of our Board of Trustees and my cohorts on the Foundation staff, thank you for your kindness and please continue to give. New Faces to the Foundation Vanessa Van Atta has joined the Mount Carmel Foundation as Senior Development Officer for Mount Carmel East. Vanessa began her new position on the East campus in December and will work closely with that hospital’s leadership triad. Vanessa comes to Mount Carmel from United Way of Central Ohio, where she served as relationship manager in leadership giving. She previously served as an income development coordinator with the American Cancer Society, where she managed five major annual fundraising events.

Lynn Weita joined the Foundation as Senior Development Officer for Mount Carmel West in January. Her office is in the Medical Staff Building on the West campus, where she works closely with that hospital’s leadership triad. Lynn joined Mount Carmel from the Ohio Health Foundation, where she served as Riverside Methodist Hospital’s development officer for endowment-level gifts and grateful-patient fundraising programs. She also worked with hospital service line leaders to determine fundraising priorities. She previously held development posts at the American Heart Association in Cleveland, Central Ohio March of Dimes, and Easter Seals Society of Central Ohio.

Operation Joint Implant Providing New Knees and Hips For Needy

Dr. Adolph Lombardi, Jr. and Dr. Keith Berend of Joint Implant Surgeons, Inc. travel regularly with a team from Operation Walk Monroeville (Indiana) to Nicaragua, Guatemala and Cuba, where patients have no access to life-improving care for arthritis or other debilitating bone conditions. “We thought, why not create a program right here to meet the need in our communities and raise awareness about this important work?” Dr. Berend explained. “Operation Joint Implant could mean the difference between a lifetime of disability and a return to work for someone who has no way to pay for the surgery they desperately need.” Operation Joint Implant is the first program of its kind in central Ohio. Operation Walk programs have already been established in California, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Two highly-respected orthopedic surgeons have joined with Mount Carmel to launch Operation Joint Implant, a local volunteer medical services program to provide free surgical treatment to the uninsured working poor in central Ohio. The program is based upon the international organization Operation Walk, which serves patients in developing countries around the world.

Candidates for Operation Joint Implant must be at or below 200% of the poverty level and ineligible for third-party payor assistance, including Medicaid. All surgical and medical services are donated by the surgeons and Mount Carmel through the Mount Carmel Foundation. The first Operation Joint Implant took place on January 7 at Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital. Future patients will be identified through traditional Mount Carmel Outreach clinic sites, Mount Carmel HealthProviders physician offices, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Family Practice Center, Mount Carmel Health Stations, and the Mount Carmel Orthopedic Clinic.

Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Plans Expansion With the northern quadrant of Columbus growing twice as fast as the rest of Columbus, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s is planning to invest more than $120 million in new facilities and equipment over the next three years to meet the needs associated with this rapid growth. The expansion will expand heart services and improve surgical capabilities, inpatient capacity and facility infrastructure. It also will include: • Open heart surgery capabilities • New patient tower with a dedicated cardiovascular unit as well as orthopedic, neurosurgery and spine patient care unit • New grand main entrance to assist with way-finding and improve travel time within the hospital • Renovated kitchen and dining • Parking garage and road enhancements

Pink Ribbon T-Shirts Funding Breast Cancer Programs

reast cancer awareness is a cause unlike any other, and pink is its official color. B Pink hats, ribbons and wristbands are all symbols of the cause and are worn proudly by its growing legion of supporters. Mount Carmel has long been one of those supporters, but this past year decided it was time to do more.

To advance the cause even further, Mount Carmel launched its “Do More Than Wear Pink” campaign to encourage women to not only dress the part, but also get an annual mammogram and encourage others to do the same. The campaign kicked off last spring with the launch of DoMoreThanWearPink.com, and has included events, print ads, radio, billboards and online advertising. Special pink ribbon T-shirts were designed in support of the campaign and are being sold at the Mount Carmel Women’s Health Centers. All proceeds benefit the Mount Carmel Foundation Women’s Health Fund, which continues to provide free breast cancer programs and services to dozens of women — all focused on early detection and survivorship.

Street Medicine The Mount Carmel Community Outreach program, which began in 1985 with a small mobile vehicle that allowed a space for triage and patient assessment, has been a vital part of Franklin County’s healthcare safety net ever since, delivering free, urgent medical care to vulnerable populations.

visits costing between $600 and $1,000 per patient, the savings to both the individual and the community are considerable.” The Street Medicine program operates through the generous support of the Mount Carmel Foundation. Costs include staffing,

medications and supplies. The annual budget for Street Medicine is $16,000, but those costs will grow as additional camps are identified and reached through the help of the program’s patient advocate.

Over the past two years the program has collected data on over 325 of its patients who stated they are “living on the streets.” According to Outreach Program Director Brian Pierson, there are more such people not receiving appropriate medical care than those who are.

“This population is fragile, has barriers to healthcare and faces challenges just in daily living.” said Mobile Coach Clinical Manager Ladonya Brady, RN. To address those growing numbers, Brady and Outreach Medical Director John O’Handley, MD began attending International Street Medicine conferences to research methods for effectively reaching this population. Last summer, after several months of preparation, Mount Carmel launched its “Street Medicine” program to go out weekly to known area homeless camps to provide immediate on-site treatment and, when needed, referral to the Mount Carmel Mobile Coach or other clinic. The team is staffed by a Registered Nurse, an Emergency Medical Technician, a physician or Nurse Practitioner and a patient advocate. “In the seven months our Street Med team has been visiting homeless camps, 61 patients have received medical care, referral information and in some cases a followup visit to check on a patient’s progress,” Pierson said. “With Emergency Department

Champagne & Diamonds 2011 Raises $250,000 For Hospice, Palliative Care More than 540 physicians, corporate and community leaders attended Champagne & Diamonds 2011, raising nearly $250,000 for Mount Carmel Hospice and Palliative Care. Held February 12 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton, the Mount Carmel Foundation’s winter fundraising event received funding from Diamond Sponsor Emergency Services, Inc., along with Platinum Sponsors PNC Bank and Mount Carmel Columbus Cardiology Consultants, Inc. The Foundation Allocations Committee supplemented the proceeds raised, bringing the total funds raised to $400,000 for this worthwhile cause.

The Mount Carmel Foundation’s Physician Philanthropy Committee proudly awarded the 2011 Dr. Tom F. Lewis Spirit of Philanthropy Award to Dr. G. Patrick Ecklar at February’s Champagne & Diamonds gala.

Passionate about education, Dr. Ecklar has taught and trained more than 200 residents and medical students at Mount Carmel as Program Director of Internal Medicine and now as a Senior Faculty member.

Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Ecklar has been with Mount Carmel for more than 30 years and has helped thousands of patients through what he calls “their journeys.”

Dr. Ecklar also is a generous supporter of the Mount Carmel Foundation, the Mount Carmel College of Nursing, Columbus Medical Association Foundation, Ohio University, Ohio State University, New Directions Career Center, WOSU, the Christina Isabelle Dance Company and COSI.

“I am very humbled to be recognized in this way and to have my name associated with Tom Lewis,” said Dr. Ecklar. “Being a physician is such an amazing experience. It’s a privilege for people to trust in you, and I’m honored that my patients trust in me to help them.”

Family, Friends Honor Tammy Weidner’s Life and Legacy

Tammy Weidner, RN, MBA

Tammy Snyder Weidner, RN, MBA, vice president of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, passed away February 6 following a prolonged illness.

A 1981 graduate of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing, Tammy served Mount Carmel for 32 years, holding a wide variety of positions. According to one of her many mentors, Tammy became interested in healthcare in 1978 when she was a patient in the Mount Carmel East intensive care unit. It was there Tammy set goals with the nursing staff and vowed to return to Mount Carmel to serve.

“Tammy’s service at Mount Carmel as mentor, encourager and teacher helped to inspire countless Associates who now have the honor to carry forward her relentless passion for excellence,” said Janet Meeks, president and chief operating officer at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s. In her honor, the Weidner family has established the Tammy Weidner Scholarship Endowment Fund at the Mount Carmel College of Nursing. Contributions can be mailed to Mount Carmel College of Nursing, 127 S. Davis Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43222, to the attention of Jan Burkey, Director of Development.

College of Nursing Alumna Leaves Generous Gift to Mount Carmel

Helen Ione Brooks, RN

Helen Ione Brooks lived a long life dedicated to helping others. And even though her life ended, her dedication did not. She passed away in 2007 at the age of 91, leaving $160,000 in her will for Mount Carmel.

“She always knew she wanted to be a nurse, even before she graduated high school,” said Tom Schaefer, successor trustee of the Helen I. Brooks Trust and a personal friend. “Helen was very much an in-charge person — very well read, and an astute investor.” Following high school graduation, Brooks attended classes at Bowling Green State University until she met the requirements to enroll in Mount Carmel School of Nursing. She graduated from Mount Carmel in 1937 and took a job as a public health nurse for the Wyandot County Health Department. A year later, she received more training from the University of Michigan’s Public Health School, and worked as a member of the Detroit Visiting Nurses Association from 1941-1945 providing home health care and maternity services. “She even delivered babies, a few of which were named after her,” Schaefer said.

In 1947, Brooks enrolled in the U.S. Army Nurses Corp. and served as a Lieutenant Nurse until 1954, stationed in both England and Germany. Upon returning, she went back to the University of Michigan, earned a master’s degree and opened her own nursing home, Brooks Convalescent Center, in Detroit. She ran the nursing home for 30 years until 1978, when she retired and sold it. She resided in Dearborn, Mich. until 1994, when she moved to the Henry Ford Retirement Village until her death in 2007. “Helen was very proud of being a nurse and Mount Carmel School of Nursing held a special place in her heart,” said Schaefer. The Helen I. Brooks, Class of 1937 Memorial Endowment Fund, designated by the Mount Carmel Foundation Board of Trustees, will now benefit aspiring nursing students just like her for years to come.

Child Creates Zoe’s Cancer Fund at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s

Support Hospice, Palliative Care Programs hen families make contributions W to the Mount Carmel Foundation in memory of loved ones who received end-of-life care through Mount Carmel’s Hospice and Palliative Care programs, those gifts go right back into the programs that inspired them. Memorial contributions are used to provide bereavement services and counseling as well as to expand and enhance the care and services Mount Carmel patients and families receive from Hospice and Palliative Care.

While visiting her grandfather, who had been admitted to Mount Carmel’s St. Ann’s in June 2010, eight-year-old Zoe Zifer was found in the second floor lobby, coloring a picture of the hospital. When the housekeeping supervisor asked if she could help her, Zoe replied, “Yes. I want to give money to the hospital because you have taken such good care of my grandpa.” In her hands, she clutched six one-dollar bills she had earned with her friend Marina, selling drawings they had colored and sold at church. Zoe’s mother confirmed her intentions, and the $6 was used to start a new fund to raise money for cancer patients at Mount Carmel. The picture that Zoe drew now hangs in the main lobby at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s with a plaque that tells her story. It was unveiled at a ceremony held on March 10.

For uninsured patients, that may come in the form of medications and equipment assistance that can keep them in their home. For others it may be therapeutic massage or visits from certified therapy dogs. For grieving children and their families, it may be an Evergreen Program support group or a summer program like Family Fun Days at the Columbus Zoo, Camp Hope or Horses and Me. Whatever the need, Mount Carmel’s Hospice and Palliative Care programs are there. For more than 2,300 people last year alone. And there is never a charge for bereavement services. Many of the programs are funded solely by private donations — most often from people whose generous hearts are helping to heal those that have just been broken.

The fund she began, called Zoe’s Cancer Fund, now supports programs and services at Mount Carmel that provide hope and healing to cancer patients and their families. Planned Gift from Dr. Goold, The Catholic Foundation Helping Associates in Need In 2010, the Foundation was blessed to receive a grant distributed by The Catholic Foundation from the estate of Edmond J. Goold. Dr. Goold, who passed away several years ago, was the medical director of the psychiatric program at Mount Carmel West for many years. Among his wishes was to support those in need in the Mount Carmel family. To that end, The Catholic Foundation has awarded $7,000 from his estate to Mount Carmel’s Sister Rose Thomas Fund, which supports the emergency needs of

“We are thankful to Dr. Goold and proud that the value of this ministry has been acknowledged and supported by The Catholic Foundation,” said Laura Campise, grants coordinator at the Mount Carmel Foundation. “It was through Dr. Goold’s generosity and planning that we and Mount Carmel’s associates in need have been blessed with this wonderful gift.”

The donation, which recognized the staffs’ expert personal care, will be used to purchase unbudgeted items for the units and help support staff-driven Maternity Services programs like the NICU Scrapbooking Program, which allows parents of create keepsakes of their children’s first days.

The Mount Carmel Foundation has funded a $200,000 grant to Mount Carmel’s Interpreting Services department to implement a system-wide video interpreting system to assist patients with Limited English proficiency (LEP) and those who use American Sign Language (ASL).

Mount Carmel’s Interpreting Services Department provides 24-hour, seven-day-a-week interpretation services for four hospital campuses, as well as clinics, physical rehab facilities, MRI and diagnostic departments, affiliated offices and private physicians’ offices throughout Franklin County. Services are offered to Limited English Proficient and American Sign Language patients, as well as those speaking Spanish, Somali and Russian. The department also staffs a multi-language line for patients and provides interpreting assistance for a variety of hospital departments.

Grace Bears Continuing Their Mission of Comfort hanks to the support of the Mount T Carmel Foundation Women’s Health Fund, more than 500 Mount Carmel patients each year can face breast cancer with GRACE. GRACE, which stands for Guidance, Respect, Advocacy, Compassion and Excellence, is a soft and furry comfort bear and a symbol of the support that Mount Carmel’s Comprehensive Breast Health Program strives to give each and every breast cancer patient. GRACE not only helps our patients feel comforted and safe but also plays a therapeutic role by providing chest and arm support after surgery. Breast cancer survivor Jacinta A. Hooker often shares her story about GRACE and what the bear means to her. “When I first met Grace, it was during a meeting with my newly introduced surgeon. We had just decided that a double-mastectomy would be the best route, and I was certain my world, as I had known it for 61 years, had ended. “Then my breast health nurse navigator said she needed a few minutes with me. At this point, my mind was floating somewhere between here and disbelief, as to how my world would be different. She explained the GRACE program and reached into a large shopping bag and pulled her out!

“I am not sure why I was so relieved. I was either so glad I didn’t have to talk to one more person that day about breast cancer or it was a polar bear that couldn’t talk back! “For a month after my surgery, Grace rode in the front seat of my car as my co-pilot, proudly displaying her tiara, wand and pink sunglasses. She has now become a part of my family.”

Cowardin, Hughes Named Stefanie’s Champions In 2010 Betsey Cowardin, former director of Mount Carmel’s Employee Assistance Program, and Mount Carmel video specialist Larry Hughes were both honored with the Champion Award at the 2010 Stefanie’s Champions award ceremony. Established by cancer advocate Stefanie Spielman and her husband Chris, the Champion Award was created to honor an important factor in cancer treatment — the loving and healing presence of devoted caregivers. Betsey is a third-generation and 16-year breast cancer survivor who thinks of herself as a breast cancer “thriver.” Following her second mastectomy, Betsey started the Mount Carmel breast cancer support groups in 1995 and the gynecological support groups in 1999. Both groups met regularly and touched women from as far away as Athens. Betsey’s daughter Claire, a thyroid cancer survivor, nominated Betsey for the award because her mom is “an incredibly unique and caring individual who did so many things voluntarily and had so much impact on other people’s lives.” Marti Hughes, a five-year ovarian cancer survivor, spoke of why her husband was so deserving of this award. She said they both believe “love is a decision, not a feeling,” and that Larry has shown this by his actions and his positive attitude in caring for her throughout their marriage. Hospitalized at Mount Carmel West in November 2005,Marti had a blood clot in her leg after her first surgery. It was a low point for her. She mentioned to her husband that she

wished she could “get her smile back.” That Christmas, with the help of Marti’s family members, Larry presented her with a book of memories from every year of her life, with the last page saying “I’m giving you your smile back.” Larry and Marti have been married for 40 years. GUA RDIAN ANGEL D O N O RS The Foundation’s Guardian Angel’s giving program offers grateful patients treated at all Mount Carmel hospitals the opportunity to recognize a caregiver or member of the support staff who has made a special difference in a hospital stay. After the Guardian Angel gift is made, the Foundation notifies the caregiver, who is presented with a Guardian Angel pin and a recognition card on behalf of the donor.
