Inspiring Stories, Transforming Lives: Featured Speaker In October, 2009, Audrey Mabrey was raped, severely beaten, and set on fire by her estranged husband, a former NYPD homicide detective. The traumatic incident left Audrey with burns covering 80 percent of her body and hospitalized in a medically induced coma. Her experience could have broken her will, but Audrey’s indomitable spirit and relentlessly positive attitude inspired her to find her true calling in life - to ensure that her two young sons would live their lives safely and free of violence, and teach other victims how to escape a similar fate. Having experienced situations that no person should ever have to endure, Audrey courageously stepped forward to serve on the ‘front lines’ in the name of protecting survivors and promoting a society free of violence. Audrey volunteers her time for domestic violence survivors seven days a week whenever they are home alone, in court or in hospital. She empowers survivors of domestic violence to develop safety plans, navigate the legal system to ensure perpetrator accountability, and understand their immediate family dynamics and the cycle of violence. Audrey is a powerful motivational speaker and has created public service announcements, spoken at functions and appeared on television and radio –in her local area of Tampa, FL, and nationally, to help raise awareness about domestic violence and its long-term impact on women and children. She is widely regarded as the voice for domestic violence survivors, sharing her story with others around the world in the hopes of raising awareness and inspiring others to believe in themselves.
