Muslim Chaplain Breakfast and Discussion with ALIM Scholars Room 202A This event is only for those who hold a formal chaplain position at an institution (university, prison, hospital, military, etc.) The Islamic Society of North America invites you to join experts in discussing the future of the Chaplaincy Program. Now that we’ve become part of this “on the go” society, our need for chaplains has grown dramatically. Traditionally, we turned to Imams for spiritual leadership, or for advice and counseling. We now ask chaplains to do the same, even though they minister to a community of sojourners mainly, who live temporarily, in unfamiliar settings. Because our students, soldiers and inmates have needs that are strikingly unique, we at ISNA believe it vital that future chaplains come adequately trained. Those already involved in chaplaincy programs as well as those looking to participate in some way, are invited to attend. Speakers: Sherman Jackson, Muneer Fareed

Yet, we only have to look to our past to see where our future lies. In a span of just 50 years, Muslims find themselves in prominent roles in business, education, engineering, law, medicine, and now even politics. Our role as students is to stand on the shoulders of these giants, building upon the legacy that they have tirelessly constructed. Learning from their trials and errors will place us squarely on the path to success as long as we hold onto the rope of God and his Prophet (pbuh). How we define the role of Muslims in the West in the decades to come rests in our hands. We only have to decide how it is shaped. 49TH ANNUAL ISNA CONVENTION

MSA National Continental Conference Friday, August 31st thru Sunday, September 2nd, 2012 Washington, D.C.

The Search for the Sound of the Soul

[To the righteous it will be said], “O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], And enter among My [righteous] servants and enter My Paradise.” (89:27-30) Our knowledge of the outside world depends on our modes of perception. We use our senses to grasp what the world around us is like. Yet, having our senses bombarded with unnecessary stimuli leaves our mind wandering. We lose sight of what our goals are in this world. However, by letting go of these distractions, we are able to see our greater purpose in this world so as to achieve the ultimate goal of Heaven. Imagine a world where all our worldly distractions have been taken away, and all that lies around us is motivation to perform our best.  In order to succeed in this world, we must understand our Creator and love Him. Once this is achieved, everything else falls into place and the goal seems that much closer. God instilled in all of us to do good, but sometimes the illusions of this world tend to pollute that good in us.  If you listen to the sound of your soul, you can hear the echoes of God’s word.

Session Key Activism: These sessions give you practical tools and lessons to take back to campus. Discussion & Learning: These sessions utilize audience interaction. FRIDAY, AUGUST 31ST, 2012 Time Event/Speakers/Moderates Room   4:00 – 5:30 PM MAIN SESSION 1 Grand Ballroom North The Search for the Sound of the Soul “Therefore, stand firm in your devotion to the upright faith - the nature made by Allah, the one on which mankind is created - and the laws of Nature ordained by Allah cannot be changed. That is the standard of true faith, but most among mankind do not know.” (30:30) We are God’s greatest creation, perfect and innocent in our childhood. This is the beginning, the moment where we are precisely calibrated to the Truth. It has been described as our inherent nature, but since we are bombarded by modern dogma, human philosophies, and tampered traditions, it gathers dust waiting to be known again. Therefore, we ask the question, what is our true nature and why were we given it? And if we are to rediscover this natural state of ours, it certainly may need some polishing in order to see our unblemished reflection again. As a result, we may find something we had felt all along but simply ignored. Speakers: Omar Suleiman, Nouman Ali Khan, Yasir Qadhi 5:45 PM Asr

Meeting Room 12

PARALLEL SESSION 1A Mount Vernon Pursuit of Happiness: Knowing Your Self He who knows himself knows God. — Ali ibn Abi Talib (R) Narrated The chirping of social networks has left the current generation interestingly preoccupied with raising the self rather than understanding it. Few times do we rest from posting our thoughts and opinions and instead ponder on the state of our existence, our purpose, and the beautiful qualities that we have been given. Seemingly inconsequential, this act of worship will not only bring us closer to discerning who we are but also appreciate the One who has given us this ability to self-reflect. If we are mindful of ourselves, we will witness God and His Mercy. Speaker: Hussain Kamani

6:00 – 7:00 PM PARALLEL SESSION 1B Grand Ballroom South Reality Check: Behind Closed Doors On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may God be pleased with him) from the Prophet (pbuh) is that among the sayings he relates from his Lord (may He be glorified) is that He said: “O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another.” (Muslim 32:6246) Many Muslims around the world are suffering in silence. They live secret lives of depression, abuse, dysfunction, and sickness; too afraid to express themselves due to the negativity surrounding these issues. The first step in healing is our acceptance of this reality, that our loved ones struggle with far more than what meets the eye. Recognizing these prevalent ailments in our families and communities brings relief to the burden of silence. It is the first step in clearing the path for those who wish to share their concerns with others, bringing light through the once closed door. Speakers: Yasmin Mogahed, Saad Tasleem

This may cause us to lose sight of what is essential and pure in the sight of God. Let us reflect on the personal effects caused by our perceptions of beauty and our need to fit in based on popular standards while understanding parameters based on Islamic precepts. Doing so will lift the burden on our mental state and free us from societal expectations. Speakers: Yasmin Mogahed, Nouman Ali Khan, Suhaib Webb  11:30 – 01:00 PM LATE NIGHT SESSION 1 Grand Ballroom North To Catch One’s Eye “Surely, we have created the human being in the finest stature.” (95:4) Healthy gender interaction is an important goal for most Muslim brothers and sisters. At times, we can become so focused on avoiding sins that we appear rigid and closed to the opposite gender. It is believed that many of the issues we face when trying to find a spouse arise from the gender interaction etiquette we’ve adopted. How do we soften our behavior by using what is permissible? We should aim to be our natural selves within the limits defined by our Prophet (pbuh). Join us for an open Q&A session that will help teach us to express ourselves properly. Fajr Meeting Room 12

10:30 – 12:00 PM MAIN SESSION 3 Grand Ballroom North The Alchemy of Happiness Ibn Al-Qayyim (may God have mercy on him) says, “Truly, in the heart there is a void that cannot be removed except with the company of God; and in it there is a sadness that cannot be removed except with the happiness of knowing God and being true to Him; and in it there is an emptiness that cannot be filled except with love for Him and turning to Him and always remembering Him; and if a person were given the entire world and what is in it, it would never fill that emptiness.” The quintessential question of our generation is asking what makes us happy. For many, it may be a home and a white picket fence, for others that perfect job, and to some, meeting Mr. or Mrs. Right. For the Muslim, the soul seeks a higher meaning that the material world will never please, that which quenches its thirst for eternal bliss. The only place to find this bliss is in the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh). It is the formula by which we may know the source of absolute happiness, our Lord and Creator. God has also created all that exists as an enduring proof to know Him. By reflecting on the purpose of creation, we will find ourselves holding another key component to everlasting delight, for in reflection does our soul draw nearer to God. It is best, though, if we find others who share in this same curiosity of knowing true contentment as they may aid us in this lifelong pursuit. For the student, one does not need look further than the local MSA or mosque where their purpose is to find this alchemy of happiness. Speakers: Hussain Kamani, Nouman Ali Khan, Suhaib Webb  12:30 – 1:30 PM WORKSHOP SESSION 1A Mount Vernon Ambassadors on Campus – The Importance of Keeping Strong Ties For many, their MSA experience ends once they complete their undergraduate program and leave the halls of their university. However, by creating an alumni organization, we can help to strengthen the ties amongst the old and new members as well as invest in the organization’s longterm sustainability. The purpose of an MSA alumni association is to keep a spirit of loyalty and to promote the general welfare of the organization. They exist to support Muslim life on campus and to strengthen the ties amongst alumni as well as within the community. Find out how to create one on your campus today! One Nation Under God: Striving for the Common Good

12:30 – 1:30 PM WORKSHOP SESSION 1B Grand Ballroom South If You Care For Your Future: Stop the Hate Muslims tend to find themselves on the receiving end of many unwarranted stereotypes. Recent incidences include Lowe’s refusing to sponsor a Muslim television show and the NYPD unjustly spying on our brothers and sisters in select MSAs. Yet, we too sometimes reverse roles and are the ones spreading hatred and injustice. There are moments we may impart a condescending tone about other people’s culture and ethnicity through trivial jokes and petty statements. What we fail to see is how these actions are no different than the ones we publicly denounce. There are ways to be rigorously self-critical without being condescendingly judgmental. Learn how we can stop the hate. Speakers: Omar Suleiman and Sherman Jackson 1:30 PM Dhuhr 1:30 – 3:00 PM

PARALLEL SESSION 2A Grand Ballroom South Pursuit of Happiness: Knowing Your Creator “Be mindful of Allah, and you’ll find Him before you.” (Tirmidhi) Many assume happiness can be derived from material possessions and financial comfort. This has led many away from the source of all human emotion, our Lord and Sustainer. Today, we unfortunately attribute objects as the source of ease rather than God Himself. Our aim, therefore, is to identify who our Creator is and what are we to make of His qualities such as Love and Mercy. If we can appreciate our Lord through His traits, we will surely find Him as our intimate friend who brings only happiness to those He loves. Speakers: Yasmin Mogahed and Yasir Qadhi

 3:00 – 4:00 PM

PARALLEL SESSION 2B Mount Vernon If You Care for Your Future: Engaging in Civic Liberties There are many issues and concerns that we as Muslims are facing in the United States. However sometimes we do not know how to make our voices heard to the right people in order to create change.  One of the key ways to making public officials care about our concerns on domestic and foreign policy is by being able to know how to effectively talk to them. Join us in a workshop that aims to empower Muslim Americans all around the country to stand up and advocate for the issues we all care about, and strengthen our ability to do it effectively.  This session is about active citizenship and embracing our rights as Muslim Americans to work with decision makers in our local communities, in our state legislatures, and in Congress to shape better policies. Speakers: Brian Calfano and Haris Tarin

4:30 – 5:30 PM WORKSHOP SESSION 2A Mount Vernon Ambassadors on Campus – Mo’ Muslims, Mo’ Money The cost of higher education has soared in the past few decades and doesn’t seem to be slowing in pace. Student loans have become the major means of financing one’s education, leaving a great burden on the young in this country. MSAs and independent organizations have responded to this by building endowments that have granted scholarships to aid educational costs. Knowing how to personally deal with student debt in a cost-efficient manner and how other MSAs can begin building endowments for future students will help alleviate the weight of their financial obligations. Learn the best ways to make college and MSA a rewarding experience without creating a hole in your pocket. Speaker: Yaqub Mirza

Why is this the case? Do we lack the proper knowledge, are we too afraid to propagate the truth, or are we just in need of Islamic knowledge ourselves? Learn effective ways of providing information about Islam, how to answer common questions, and how to avoid common pitfalls. Speaker: Omar Suleiman 5:45 PM Asr

6:00 – 8:00 PM MAIN SESSION 4 Grand Ballroom North Torchbearers: Creating Positive Changes “And We made them leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practice regular charity; and they constantly served Us and Us only.” (21:73) Muslims in the West are faced with the difficult task of integrating within larger society and being direct contributors to its growth and well-being. Recent issues such as the NYPD spying scandal have challenged this integration for students. How we address these injustices and coordinate our response with the public and government at large will reflect on who we are as Muslims in America. This attitude must also translate into the influence we have on our local communities that include Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Our role must extend beyond the walls of our mosques and into the public domain where we may influence political, educational, and even social trends. Our presence will be felt if we only put forth the effort that is required. A fitting opportunity is in the upcoming election where the course of political events rests in the hands of us as voters. How we define our role in this referendum on where our country is heading will surely have an impact on people here and abroad. Join us for a discussion on the multiple roles we students play in American society. Speakers: Suhaib Webb, Tariq Ramadan, Hamza Yusuf 8:00 PM 8:00 – 11:00 PM

Verily, Paradise will be his abode.” (79:40-41) Throughout time, society has enforced strong social prohibitions on which issues can be openly discussed, specifically those regarding areas of human activity or social custom that relate to sensual and emotional aspects of life. These taboos exist as a means to hide the “crude” from public discussion while revealing how culturally relative our ideas about the “natural” are. Although we may be averse to entertaining these topics in the public space, it is both necessary and would serve as a great benefit to our community. We may then understand how to better confront and handle issues such as sexuality, mental health, and physical abuse. Join us for an open Q&A as we discuss some of the most common taboos in our society as well as how to address and cope with them. Speakers: Khalid Latif, Yasmin Mogahed, Omar Mahmood, Altaf Husain

11:00 – 12:30 PM MAIN SESSION 5 Grand Ballroom North The Great Balancing Act “It is Allah who has sent down the Book in truth and [also] the balance. And what will make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near.” (42:17) The place where love and fear intersect is where we will find faith. Our soul naturally oscillates between both feelings: the love of our Creator for that which he has blessed us with but fear of the repercussions if we deny his omnipotence. Our task is to find the happy medium where neither arrogance in our faith leads us astray nor fear of our shortcomings leaves us forlorn. Situations arise that try even the most unshakable of convictions; however our beloved Prophet (pbuh) left us with the light of hope: that the here and now has yet to be written and we are its authors. We have the opportunity to reaffirm our love of the Creator and make amends for our misgivings, returning our soul to its natural rhythm. Embracing this opportunity recognizes that the present is God’s gift to us. Speakers: Omar Mahmood, Zaid Shakir, Yasir Qadhi  1:00 – 2:00 PM WORKSHOP SESSION 3A Grand Ballroom South Reality Check — Seeking Counsel There are moments when we must call on our brothers and sisters for assistance as the burden of our difficulties are too great for us to bear alone. In the multitude of difficulties we or our loved ones may face, mental health is one that seemingly affects many. It knows no race, creed, or color extending to the rank of rich or poor, young or old, strong or weak. It is in these periods that the counsel of others will help lift the weight of psychological distress off our shoulders and bring ease in our time of need. For those of us who suffer from such an affliction, brave the choice of asking for help. You will surely find those who are willing to assist. Speakers: Omar Mahmood and Altaf Husain  1:00 – 2:00 PM WORKSHOP SESSION 3B Mount Vernon If You Care For Your Future – I Spy with my NYPD Eye This past year, actions taken by the NYPD to monitor Muslim student activities on campuses across the Northeast have been brought to light. Though many officials were quick to distance themselves from the actions of the NYPD, others were surprisingly supportive. Such support begs the question- How should a MSA respond if similar issues arise on their campus? Also, what rights or legal support exists that we all need to be aware of? Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.” (12:87) There have and always will be times when you are desperately praying to God for an answer to some very important issues. You wait and wait and nothing seems to happen. But what is it? Most of us believe that we, ourselves, are the problem. We believe that it is our own lack of faith and/ or that our lives are not pure enough for God to acknowledge our prayers. We do not know or understand what God is up to; perhaps, He is testing our faith or maybe our request may just not be good for us. Understand the concept of trials and tribulations in Islam and how to distinguish between a test and a punishment. Speaker: Khalid Latif

 4:00 – 5:00 PM

PARALLEL SESSION 3B Mount Vernon Pursuit of Happiness: Knowing this World and the Next “Certainly this world has not been made a place of permanent stay for you. But it has been created as a pathway in order that you may take from it the provision of your (good) actions for the permanent house (in Paradise). Be ready for departure from here and keep close your mount for setting off.” - Ali (ra) Seeing creation as it really is, a blessing and confirmation of God and His power, is an endeavor that rids the material of any deification we may ascribe. Rather than presuppose existence, we begin to thoroughly assess our relationship with the creation and how it will lead us into His presence. If we are astute, we will find shades of God’s attributes in this world that point directly to Him, carrying us closer to His Love. Seeing the unseen as it really is, however, is a challenging matter that requires understanding of divine knowledge, the Quran. Otherwise, man would be unaware of what his senses could not perceive. There is satisfaction in knowing that our Creator has left us with knowledge concerning the life to come, a certainty we otherwise would be blind to. Grasping the mercy of the realities of heaven and hell, angels and jinn though the Quran along with clear apprehension of this world can only fulfill our most important pursuit, to be eternally loved and happy. Main Session 1 Room 151 A&B Life’s Instruction Manual When putting together a desk that comes in different pieces, why do most people ignore the instruction manual? Its purpose is to help ease the complicated process. In that same way, Muslims have the perfect instruction manual on living life. The Quran. When we think about the Quran, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the amazing stories. After becoming familiar with these stories, the next step is to tie them into our everyday lives. While trying to apply these stories to our lives, one word seems to creep up and cause problems. That word is HOW? “How do I apply the prophets’ stories to my life, when they happened so long ago?” “How do I benefit from these stories?” There’s only one way you can answer them…come to this session! And we know that for the love of Allah, we must obey all of His commands. But have you ever wondered why Allah has commanded certain things from us? Ever feel like you are trying to communicate with them, but there is a huge brick wall between you and them? After Allah and the prophet, we know that it is our parents who come next in importance. But sometimes we do not always see eye to eye with our parents and them with us. The miscommunication and unsolved issues can result in rebelling, arguing and talking back. Are women oppressed in Islam? Why does your religion force people to condone terrorism? Many of us have dealt with some form of prejudice and invalid stereotypes against our own religion. It can be tough to clarify these misjudgments in a calm manner that can help better the image of Islam in a non-Muslim’s mind. Come to this active session to hear how your fellow brothers and sisters have dealt with these issues. Speaker: Dr. Omar Mahmood Moderator: Jasmin Ullah

Main Session 10 Room 151 A&B Charter for Compassion/Book Signing It is not a choice that we have, nor is it an option from a slew of opinions among schools of thought or methodologies. It is a mandate given to us by Allah (SWT) and exemplified by our beloved Prophet (S). Whether one begins to read the kalām of Allah (the Qur’ān) with the basmAllah, or one reflects on the prophetic way of living, being, interacting, and feeling, we are constantly reminded of being compassionate to one another. Raulullah (S) states “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” Let’s ask ourselves, do we truly believe?  Speakers: Karen Armstrong Moderator: Uzair Siddiqui

Main Session 12 Room 151 A&B Open Spaces You have secrets. Everybody does. But would you ever share them? That time you were offered a drink by a friend, but didn’t know what to do. Or when you were caught talking a little too animatedly to someone of the opposite gender. Or how about that time you thought you might share your secrets with a Muslim friend of yours, but ended up being judged and looked down upon. You’ve listened to the lectures, heard the speakers, now it’s time for YOU to get YOUR SAY. Speak whatever is on your mind and express yourself in a free and comfortable atmosphere. Come to the MYNA booth to make your own topic, or simply show up to the session and see what everyone else is talking about. This is your space. Moderator: Mohammad Azruf Ullah

Main Session 13 Room 151 A&B How to Change a Life … Prophetic Style In the stories about the Prophets and Sahabas, we constantly hear about the amazing things they did to change the lives of the people around them. We also learn about the da’wah they gave and the manner in which they gave it. After gaining all this knowledge, we tend to overlook how to embrace this knowledge. In this session we will learn how to give da’wah in a less dated way, yet still hold onto the tricks of ummah’s great leaders. Speakers: Imam Zaid Shakir, Mufti Hussain Kamani Moderator: Samee Khan
