Economic Snapshot of the States President Trump has now been in office for six months. With lags in releases of economic data, a full accounting of this milestone is a few months away. However, as this economic snapshot of all 50 states shows, Trumponomics has the U.S. economy trending in a worrisome direction. •
Since President Trump took office, U.S. employers gave notifications to lay off more than 140,000 workers as companies closed plants and operations, and shipped jobs offshore. In 26 states, at least 1,000 workers have lost their jobs in mass layoffs since Trump took office.
•
Between January and June 2017, hourly earnings for average worker grew in just 7 states. For the country as a whole, wages are down 1.4 percent under Trump, and in the 43 states and District of Columbia where wages fell, workers now take home 1.7 cents less for each dollar they earned before Trump became president.
Although the U.S. economy overall continues its expansion from the Great Recession and associated financial crisis, the recovery can look very different from state to state, and even county to county. These economic snapshots of the states show that while some areas of the country have surged ahead, many parts of the country, rural and urban, are struggling to regain economic opportunity and dynamism. Most Americans do not measure their family’s well-being in terms of stock prices and aggregate GDP. Thus, the state-by-state snapshots track an array of metrics indicating local economic performance, families’ economic security, how well states are preparing for the economic future with investments in people’s health and learning, and the costs of living that feature regularly in kitchen table discussions.

Notes 1. Changes in state-level data may not be statistically significant due to sampling variation. Individual monthly readings should be interpreted with caution and in the context of longer-term trends and other data that become available. 2. Full-time work at minimum wage assumes a 2,000 hour work year. 3. Women's annual earnings as a share of men's depicts the ratio of median annual earnings for women who work full-time compared to men who work full-time. 4. Methodology of data collection may vary state to state. The national average for infant childcare costs is calculated by JEC staff using an average of state costs. 5. Cost of college attendence includes tuition, room, board, and other mandatory fees for undergraduate students. 6. Milk prices are for the region that the state is in and represent the latest available data for each region. The national price includes the average for the continental U.S. only.
