Liam Costello, We understand Olney Town Council have objected to the Planning Application Ref: 14/02474/FUL for the removal of the existing garage and execution of single storey rear extension to the Olney Catholic Church. Further to this we wanted to take this opportunity to provide a series of visuals (as attached) and some supporting text to read in conjunction with the visuals which provides the rationale behind the final design of the proposal and assist in addressing the areas raised in the objection. We thought it would be helpful to your members if we explained the scheme with some coloured images. The images show that from West Street only the south east corner of the extension will be seen so there will be minimal impact on the view from the public realm. A new gate will link the existing single storey store (former toilets) with the proposal, creating a secure site. The existing buildings include the Presbytery and the Church. Although the buildings have a direct internal linkage we believe there is little relationship between the architecture of the Church or the Presbytery. We believe the architectural expression of an extension to the rear should not match either one of the existing styles but respond to the site constraints and context, the clients’ requirements and result in a design which ties the two buildings together, functionally and aesthetically. We believe our proposals enhance the existing uncomfortable relationship between the two buildings. The appearance and scale of the extension responds to the constraints and opportunities offered by the site. The extension has been kept to a single storey minimising any impact on the neighbouring properties whilst accommodating the existing first floor windows of the presbytery. The architectural language, including the arrangement of the glazed openings and facing materials, relate to the existing buildings and site layout whilst clearly being of their time. We hope the above and attached provide a better explanation of our proposal and we hope this will allow the Council to withdraw its objection and, ideally, to support the proposal. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss the proposal in more detail or if you would like us to explain the design to Councillors. Kind regards Chris
