Over the next decades demand for meat and milk is expected to increase rapidly;



The livestock sector makes in major positive contributions to global food security, in particular for the poor and women and is therefore critical in reaching the corresponding MDGs;



There are a number of negative effects of livestock production on global food security, such as the contribution to GHG emission and the competition between humans and livestock for land and food;



In the press as well as in the scientific literature erroneous data abound on the role of livestock in food security, in particular on the competition between human and animals for human edible food;



A recent publication, analyzing this feed/food debate finds1 that the production of meat and milk poses less a drain on human plant-based food than often reported, and can, for protein, even produce a net gain;



There are many technology and policy measures to reduce the GHG contribution and the competition for land.



But stronger carrots and sticks will be required for their implementation…..
