Welcome to Sydney One of the world’s most exciting cities Sydney is a vibrant, internationally recognised city. With a population of over four million people from over 180 countries and speaking over 140 languages, it is truly multicultural. Cost of living

Situated on one of the world’s most beautiful and natural harbours, Sydney provides a unique outdoor lifestyle, offering a variety of alfresco dining venues, parks and an exhaustive choice of outdoor leisure activities. ‘Sydneysiders’ also have access to more than 70 beaches spread along the city’s coastline.

Living in Australia is cost effective when compared to other western countries. Sydney caters for all socio-economic groups. Your budget will depend on the type of lifestyle you choose and the location of your accommodation. We anticipate that an international student will require approximately AU$18,000 – AU$20,000 for living expenses each year (not including tuition fees).

Sydney’s natural beauty is enhanced by the rich and vibrant arts and entertainment scene with new concerts, opera, jazz, theatre and cinema regularly available. The many lively shopping and dining precincts (including its very own Chinatown) offer variety and ensure you’ll never be bored.

Climate Sydney has a temperate climate. The warmest months are January and February, with temperatures ranging between 18 and 36 degrees Celcius. The coldest months are June and July however, daytime temperatures rarely fall below 10 degrees Celcius. The average rainfall is 1,200mm per year and average humidity is 62%.

Above all, Sydney is home to a relaxed and friendly community who live, work and play together in this unique city.

Course accreditation

A minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) is required for direct entry into Diploma and for the Fast Track option. An IELTS score of 5.5 is needed to gain provisional entry to a SIBT Diploma. Students admitted into the Provisional Entry Program must complete an additional Communication and Study Skills unit in the first semester before full entry is granted into Diploma. For further details refer to page 27.

SIBT is a Higher Education Provider offering courses accredited by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. Academic standards are assured by Macquarie University moderation procedures and university accredited examinations.

Course structure Students must complete 8 academic units, either over 8 months (Fast Track) or 12 months (Standard Track). Students on a Provisional Diploma will complete their studies at SIBT over 12 months. Unit content is identical to the respective first year units at Macquarie University.

Teaching methods SIBT students attend 4 hours of classroombased lectures and tutorials per unit per week. It is expected that approximately 6–8 hours per week per unit will also be required for additional study time.

Assessment methods The method of assessment may vary depending on the course and units selected. A combination of university approved assessments, including assignments, essays, oral presentations, tutorial participation and formal examinations may be used.

Further studies Upon successful completion of a SIBT Diploma students enter the appropriate Bachelor degree (Year 2, Semester 1) or continue at SIBT to complete an Advanced Diploma.

Requirements for transfer to Macquarie University In accordance with Macquarie University Progression and Transfer Rules, SIBT students must meet the following conditions for transfer to Macquarie University or Macquarie City Campus: • M inimum requirement is a pass in 8 Diploma units. • S ome degree programs require a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA). Refer to pages 16–19. • Australian citizens and permanent residents require a minimum GPA of 1.5.

Pallavi Chaudhary, India Diploma of Business, SIBT

A major advantage of studying in SIBT is the size of the classroom: no lecture has more than 50 students so the lecturer can give each student individual attention. I also like SIBT’s location on the Macquarie University Campus because I enjoy the same benefits as Macquarie University students, like the library, the computer labs, student discounts in the on-campus cafés, etc. I have never regretted making the decision to study so far away from home. It is an enriching experience that has changed me for the better.

NEW!

A day in the life of a SIBT student Siti Nuramirah Mohamad Fazwi, Malaysia Diploma of Commerce

Activity 8am

I wake up around 7am and take the fantastic new train to Macquarie University station. During my 20-minute trip I revise my accounting lecture notes before class. Accounting is one of my best subjects and my goal is to be an Accountant (which is why I chose Macquarie – it is famous worldwide for Accounting!). I grab a coffee and a bagel from the SIBT ‘Globe Café’ before heading to class.

11am

I have finished the first 3-hour block of an Accounting lecture of the day (we also have breaks in this time). The lecturer was very clear in her teaching, she explained the theory well and gave practical exercises so we could further understand what she was teaching. I am now heading to my tutorial for the same unit, which will go for about an hour. My tutor is super friendly and very knowledgeable – he’s currently doing CPA, and I can ask him anything I need to.

12pm

Lunchtime! So much choice… I usually choose between the food court (U @ MQ) on campus or go across to Macquarie Centre, which has over 250 shops and restaurants. Today it’s U @ MQ and I am meeting my lovely SIBT friends in the central courtyard. There are five of us in the group – from Korea, Australia, China and India. There’s amazing diversity at SIBT and Macquarie, around 100 different nationalities, so I have made a lot of friends from all around the world. I have Thai vegetable rice for lunch and we talk about our upcoming tests and when we are going to meet next for study group.

1pm

The next class is ISYS104 (Computing). Every week we have a quiz at the beginning of the class so the lecturer knows if we have understood last week’s lecture. It’s great revision for me! The lecturer always makes the class very interesting and lively. He also usually explains what we are going to learn in practical class so this makes it so much easier when we get into this next class. In this unit, I have learnt how to use Excel, Microsoft Word and even how to build a website from scratch!

6pm

Class is over and I’m really excited because there is a Malaysian Club BBQ on at Macquarie University Village. I love meeting new people and the students who come along are actually from everywhere – not just Malaysia. It’s a good mix between typical Aussie BBQ food, sausages and steak, and Malaysian food, mee goreng and curry puffs. I meet Sally, an Australian girl who is studying a Diploma of Communication at SIBT. She is really friendly and we make plans to meet up for a coffee next week.

9pm

I say goodbye to everyone and catch the train back to my apartment. I revise today’s lesson and quickly fall asleep! I want to get up early tomorrow to go to the gym at Macquarie University’s Sports and Aquatic Centre after all the delicious food I’ve eaten today!

21

Same Class. New Experience. SIBT now has the same semester dates and one timetable across two campus locations. This means that students can design their timetable to study some units at SIBT in the City and some at the SIBT campus at North Ryde. For example, a Diploma of Commerce student might choose to do a Finance unit in the city on Tuesday, Marketing and Accounting at North Ryde on Wednesday and then head back to the City on Thursday for Computing. Students have the flexibility to experience both campus lifestyles while still graduating with the same high-quality SIBT Diploma.

The benefits of choosing units at SIBT in the city 1. It’s convenient

2. E xperience two study lifestyles

We understand it is often easier to get to the city, so studying some units in the CBD could cut down travel time and make life a little easier.

Students can combine the experiences of studying at Macquarie University, with studying in the heart of Sydney’s financial district at Macquarie City Campus. Take this opportunity to get more out of your tertiary learning experience.

Students can take advantage of the new railway line that operates between Macquarie University and Wynyard station. It’s never been easier or quicker to travel between campuses by public transport.

22

As the hub of Sydney’s business and social activity, the CBD offers a variety of options to socialise with friends and classmates. Share lunch with friends in Hyde Park or the Rocks, or go to the movies after class – the new experiences are endless.

3. Increased opportunities for part-time work Studying in the city provides the chance to gain part-time work close to the campus and obtain valuable work experience. At the same time, working close to Macquarie City Campus means you can more easily divide your time between study and employment.

4. Same high quality education It’s only the location that is different. The unit content and exams are identical at each campus, so wherever students choose to study they will receive the same high-quality education.

‘In this semester I designed my timetable to study two units at the City and two units at North Ryde. The campus at North Ryde has a huge range of facilities, and this combined with the smaller classes and quiet, modern learning environment in the City make my study lifestyle both convenient and always interesting! Next semester I’ll continue to study at both campuses as it makes university life more diverse and I can get more out of my time here by experiencing the advantages of both locations.’ Tora Brophy, Australia Diploma of Commerce, SIBT
