Management and Leadership Training: Visual Metaphors as a vehicle for change “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Henry Ford

Introduction: When faced with a problem we have a tendency to take the same approach, responding within existing frameworks, because we have formed habits and our past experiences, which are our point of reference, inform our current responses. However, we often have a wealth of alternative and better solutions within us. To reach it and go beyond surface knowledge we have to access the subconscious, the language of the mind which is predominantly non-verbal and metaphorical. This makes it hard to capture using a verbal centred approach. To explore and harness that hidden knowledge we need to use a non-verbal centred approach, one that accesses our subconscious thoughts through the use of images and metaphors. One approach is through the use of collage. The visual metaphors that surface through collaging, together with the sharing of their meaning, converts subconscious knowledge to explicit knowledge. Using this approach helps learning by creating a new framework by which to view and interpret situations; increasing the potential for developing new responses and solutions. Additionally, when applied in this context, because every collage created produces a different result, it greatly minimises the risk of repeat behaviour patterns being formed. Aim of the course: This half day practical training workshop introduces and applies the principle of collage art and storytelling as a technique for developing visual metaphors to stimulate creative thinking, problem solving and aid decision making. Who is it for?  

The workshop is designed to be delivered either in an educational setting or in-house with an organisations management/leadership team. To benefit from this course you need an open mind and willingness to participate in a group; creatively and verbally. However, no artistic skills or previous experience is necessary. [Due to the nature of collaging this course is unfortunately not suited to those with severe visual impairments] Learning outcomes: By the end of the course each individual will have created a collage enabling them to identify the specific personal challenges they face as a leader. They will understand the principles and process for using collage art and storytelling as a tool for accessing the subconscious for the purpose of:    

Better understanding of colleagues through the sharing of stories Sharing knowledge Organisational learning Complements existing learning and development tools Provides the organisation with access to an additional approach to meeting the diverse needs of differing learning styles.

"Metaphors are a very powerful tool because they are familiar to everyone, they help tie together related concepts, and as the Olson Zaltman study revealed, they resonate in the deepest possible way."
