Fidlar - Fidlar (Picture Disc) FIDLAR's debut LP plunges the listener into the band's beer-soaked, late-night, raucous garage party. Through the making of RAMU, that goal has grown to be something more."

Insane Clown Posse - The Amazing Jeckel Brothers  Horrorcore hip-hop veterans Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope of Insane Clown Posse have never been one to avoid controversy for the sake of their craft. The release of their 1997 album The Great Milenko proved that, when the album's label, Disney-owned Hollywood Records, removed the album from shelves mere hours after its release to appease complaints by the Southern Baptist Church. This controversy only served to propel the Detroit duo's profile higher, as numerous labels lined up to court them. By 1998 Insane Clown Posse had settled into Island Records, and The Great Milenko had sold over one million copies, setting the stage for their next record. The Amazing Jeckel Brothers was released in 1999, was the fifth entry into their "Joker's Cards" anthology of albums, and featured 17 tracks touching on themes of anger, morality, and sin, heavily inspired by the negative press the group has received from the Hollywood Records debacle. Like Milenko, the album featured production from their frequent collaborator DJ Mike E. Clark, but Jeckel Brothers set itself apart with its sound, heavily indebted to classic 90s rap, as opposed to Milenko's hard rock-influence, featuring key contributions from legends of hip-hop like Ol' Dirty Bastard and Snoop Dogg, from fellow horrorcore icons Twiztid, ska-revival band Gangsta Fun, and even prank call comedians The Jerky Boys. Despite receiving a thrashing from critics, Insane Clown Posse defied the press it received, when The Amazing Jeckel Brothers debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 charts, and ultimately reached platinum status in 2008. In celebration of this landmark album, Insane Clown Posse's own Psychopathic Records now presents this special reissue of The Amazing Jeckel Brothers. Not just on vinyl for the very first time, but pressed on transparent red wax, and housed in two variant covers featuring each of the two iconic Jeckel Brothers from the original artwork.

It is a testament to the talent of Modest Mouse that this tribute will certainly ring true with fans of all music. FEATURED LOCAL ARTIST: COLOURATURA

This month, Nail City Record is proud to feature local music project Colouratura. This unique project is the brainchild of composer Nathan James and producer/sound designer Ian Beabout. The two met and began developing music as a duo in the summer of 2016 while pursuing music degrees from West Liberty University. May 2017 marked the musical duo’s first self titled release, Colouratura. This self titled debut album was recorded at West Liberty University’s recording studio, and is a hybrid of several genres including rock, pop, ambient, electronic, and film score.

During the following summer of 2017, Beabout retrofitted a barn-style shed from Old Hickory Buildings in Bridgeport, into a professional recording studio, he dubbed ShedSounds. In the preceding fall, Colouratura began working on their new material, at ShedSounds studio with the aim to focus their musical identities and interests into a much more cohesive work. Colouratora’s upcoming album, Unfamiliar Skies,  is due this spring. According to Beabout you can expect a “hodgepodge of styles including progressive rock, metal, psychedelic, and folk, but it represents a much more ‘band oriented’ offering. It’s best described as ‘art rock.’ ”

“We wanted to make Unfamiliar Skies everything the first album wasn’t,” Beabout said. “And that’s not to say we aren’t immensely proud of the first. It’s simply that we wanted to present a piece of work that represented a lot of what we love about music. Good songs, great energy, and hopefully something that is consistently engaging.”

Colouratura and ShedSounds would also like to highlight some of the local and  other collaborating artist who contributed to the projects thus far:  Local musicians, Eric Holskey and Brandon ‘Tuna’ Collins -drums, Derek Pavlic- guitar and bass, Chris Kuskey- guitar co-songwriter, Nathan Lestini- bass. Other collaborators,   Michael P. Dawson - sax, and Bret Harold Hart- Guitar. Dave Newhouse (of prog. rock band The Muffins)- woodwinds,

In order to jump start the release, Colouratura has launched a Gofundme page that has already had a terrific response from contributors around the world. Thus far, Colouratura has enjoyed airplay on US radio, as well as stations in Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK. You can check out their Gofundme here – www.gofundme.com/unfamiliarskies. Sunday, April 8th - Timber Rattle // Drekka // bedtime On April 8th, at 6pm Nail City Record will be hosting the following bands for an evening of music. TIMBER RATTLE (Ithaca) is a kind of "pyche-pastoral" hymnal which seems to be as informed by noise shows in west coast basements or the revolutionary spirit of poet Jean Genet as it is by a panoply of North American landscapes. A cohesive and quintessential offering, 'Phantoms of Place' is a meditation on physical space, place and tradition, and an exploration of the meaning of being human in the garment of living nature.. DREKKA (Bloomington) has explored early industrial tape culture, fragile bedroom noise folk, and expansive cinematic textures. These very personal pieces touch on the themes of silence, memory, forgetfulness. But rather than obscure himself, as is so often the effect of experimental music, DREKKA functions as a direct line into Anderson's mind and his tenuous cache of memories. These personal aspects and this fragility are even more clearly on display than if they were obfuscated by poetic abstractions. While "haunting" and "hypnagogic" are words often used to describe experimental music and art, DREKKA unequivocally occupies and deals in those dark spaces which comprise the tenuous province of memory and dreams. Those are the real ghosts of time and sound BEDTIME (Wheeling, WV) made their debut at the 2017 Bridge + Tunnel Xmas show. This is their proper debut of original material.

FREE SHOW, DONATIONS ARE ENCOURAGED.

For March, my pick of the month is David Byrne- Live from

Jon's March Pick

Austin, Texas This album was released by musician David Byrne- (formerly of the Talking Heads) on New West Records on October 2, 2007. The original release was only available on

David Byrne - Live From

CD and DVD. Fortunately, for those of us who prefer to listen on vinyl, the album was recently reissued in 2017, as a two disc

Austin, TX

lp on red vinyl.

All of the songs on the album were recorded live during a KLRU television show called Austin City Limits. The show, that later became this album, was a promotion highlighting Byrne and his 2001 tour of Look into the Eyeball. During several songs on this album, Byrne is accompanied by the Austin-based tango string sextet, called Tosca. This album was an easy pick for me this month for several reasons. The first reason is I have a heavy bias for Byrne’s music- he is one of my favorite musicians. Secondly, this album not only includes songs from Byrne’s solo work, but also includes several Talking Heads songs and a Whitney Houston cover, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)." Lastly, this album is a good warm up for his much anticipated, American Utopia  album that is about to drop March 9th, 2018.

Molly's March Pick Lately, I have been listening a lot to War (Originally called Eric Burdon and War). That's why I picked "The World Is a Ghetto", released in 1972. The album has many hits, including "Cisco Kid", "Where Was You At" and "Four Cornered Room". "The World Is A Ghetto" topped the charts in 1972, and the album was Billboard magazine's Album of the Year as the best-selling album of 1973.

The band's harmony is insane. The use of many instruments and different sounds makes their music unique. It's a mix between Jazz, Funk, Rock, Latin, Rhythm and Blues and Reggae. Lyrically, they carry a timeless message of hope and peace, much needed today.

War - The World Is A Ghetto

March Album Of The Month Jimi Hendrix - Both Sides Of The Sky Both Sides Of The Sky presents 13 studio recordings including 10 which have never before been released. All but two of these studio recordings were made during a fertile two year period between January 1968 and 1970. Jimi’s mastery of the studio and his increasing use of them as a proving ground for new songs resulted in a growing collection of extraordinary material. Both Sides Of The Sky completes a trilogy of albums [with Valleys Of Neptune and People, Hell & Angels] intended to present the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in the Hendrix archive.

TRACK SYNOPSIS’: Mannish Boy - The first ever studio session by the group Hendrix would christen as his Band Of Gypsys. Hendrix, Cox & Miles shared a love for the blues as this driving, uptempo reworking of “Mannish Boy” by Muddy Waters makes clear. Lover Man - Just two weeks before their triumphant New Year’s concerts at the Fillmore East in NYC [yielding both 1970’s Band Of Gypsys and 2016’s sequel Machine Gun], Hendrix gathered with Cox and Miles to cut this dynamic rendition of what had become a favorite concert staple. Stepping Stone - A totally unique take on this Hendrix favorite, with Jimi showcasing both blues and country styled licks atop a relentless, galloping beat. $20 Fine -Stephen Stills joined Jimi, Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles Express keyboardist Duane Hitchings at this September 1969 session. With Stephen handling lead vocals and organ, Jimi added multiple guitar parts to this rollicking Stills original. Power Of Soul - This 1970 studio session came three weeks after the Band Of Gypsys concerts at the Fillmore East. While a live version remains one of the highpoints of Band Of Gypsys, Jimi never released a studio version during his lifetime. For this album, we present the mix that Hendrix and Kramer prepared of the complete song at Electric Lady on August 22, 1970. Jungle - The influence of Curtis Mayfield can be heard here as Jimi expands on the “Villanova Junction Blues” theme he made famous by its inclusion in the 1970 Woodstock documentary. Things I Used To Do - Jimi is joined for this rendition of Guitar Slim’s blues classic by Johnny Winter. Jimi’s trademark guitar work and Winter’s deft slide playing weaves in and around the foundation set by bassist Billy Cox and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young drummer Dallas Taylor. Georgia Blues - Jimi reunited with some old friends from his pre-Experience days. Lonnie Youngblood, with whom Hendrix played in R&B groups like Curtis Knight & The Squires, voiced this superb twelve bar blues neatly underpinned by Hendrix’s sublime rhythm and lead guitar work. Sweet Angel - With Axis: Bold As Love only just released, Jimi immediately turned his focus to recording what would become Electric Ladyland. This gorgeous, instrumental reading of “Angel,”, features Jimi on guitar, bass and vibraphone joined by Mitch Mitchell. Woodstock - Stephen Stills came to this session fresh from having visited Joni Mitchell, who had a new song that Stills was excited to try and record. Long before CSNY’s version, Stephen, Jimi and Buddy Miles recorded this amazing rendition. Send My Love To Linda - A superb new Hendrix original composition recorded with Cox and Miles in the aftermath of their successful Band Of Gypsys performances at the Fillmore East. Cherokee Mist - Together with drummer Mitch Mitchell, Jimi created this moody, evocative original complete with his playing of a sitar to complement his traditional electric guitar.
