Benefits of Artistic Expression & Art Therapy for Seniors The majority of seniors can benefit greatly from engaging in different art forms, and some may improve their quality of life through doing art therapy. Taking part in artistic activities and engaging in therapeutic processes with art are both valuable, but in different ways.

experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.” (AATA) In Memory Care, art therapy can have transformative effects. Art therapists aim to improve life for memory care individuals by presenting creative opportunities for them to express feelings and experiences, and strengthen connections to others in the moment. A senior who can no longer write or use language cohesively may be able to paint in many colors or reveal a part of their past in an image. Due to such expressions, family and friends often feel strengthened connections.

According to Gene Cohen, MD, PhD, as we age, participation in the arts positively affects our health. Cohen concluded this from his own 2006 study in which he found seniors active in arts had better physical health, fewer visits to the doctor, required less medication, and fell less frequently than those in the study not involved in arts (Today’s Geriatric Medicine).

Art therapy isn’t about being the best artist in the room. It’s about the connections between creative choices made and one’s inner life (Psychology Today).

Such findings shed light upon the value that painting, dancing, drawing, knitting, sculpting, drama, photography, poetry, creative writing, and playing or moving to music can bring in senior living communities.

Patron Saint of Ireland Saint Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in Ireland since his passing on March 17, 493 A.D. Patrick grew up in Roman Britain, was captured by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. He was later freed, returned home and became a missionary. He chose to return to Ireland to enlighten the pagans about Christianity. He used the familiar three-leaved green shamrock to convey the Holy Trinity. It proved to be a symbol easily understood by the Irish. It has withstood the test of time and now all over the world, Saint Patrick’s Day is honored with feasting, festivals, the wearing of the green and is even a Bank Holiday in Ireland.

May the luck of the Irish be with you! On Contentment: “The discontented man finds no easy chair.”

Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706-April 17, 1790)

On Diligence: “Diligence is the mother of good luck.”

On Folly: “Silence is not always a Sign of Wisdom, but Babbling is ever a Folly.” On Friendship: “A true friend is the best Possession.” On Honesty & Dishonesty: “Half the Truth is often a great Lie.”

Benjamin first published Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1732. It was extremely popular with the readers of the day. He became famous for his common sense philosophy.

On Prudence & Good Sense: “Tis easier to prevent bad habits than to break them.”

Following are some of his time-honored wit & wisdom. 3

Little Sassy and I first came together in 1983 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where I was a professor at New Mexico State University. He is a lilac-crowned Amazon parrot, found in the wild around the jungles of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Recently we celebrated our 35th anniversary together! (That equals half my life.) He is now 44 years old (a healthy adult), since he was 9 when I met him. As all responsible parrot owners should, I have made provision in my will that dear friends who are also “bird people” will have him when I’m gone. I’ve given them complete and careful instructions for his care, his likes and dislikes, etc. I felt very proud when our vet said he couldn’t be getting better care! What a great compliment. Most people are not aware that parrots need 70% “people” food. Little Sassy chooses items always available to him that are spread out on his big smorgasbord! Favorite fruits, veggies, crunchy toast and crackers are just some examples. Also, he is a little cannibal, eating his own cousins when he greatly enjoys chicken drumsticks, complete with bone! (He eats the marrow.) He also gets vitamin, mineral, and amino acid supplements on his seeds and in his water. Only when all these elements are given will his diet be balanced and complete.

So cheerful, cute and colorful, Little Sassy is a legal Companion Animal, just my cure for depression or frustration, according to medical sources. Indeed, he is my little sunshine, my only sunshine, who makes me happy from when morning skies are grey until our last of many kisses before bedtime every night. - Rosemary Silversteen
