An Optimistic Report from the Dystopian, Apolcalyptic World of 2030 In this talk, we’ll explore dozens of disparate trends in technology, sustainability and the construction industry and connect the dots to get a glimpse into how we can save the world AND save our businesses at the same time. Together, we’ll acknowledge the challenges and complexities facing project teams pursuing net zero / zero carbon projects and how to identify the risks amplified over and above a conventional development. Main Hall Empowering a Sustainable Legacy in LA This session will review the notable lessons and achievements of past projects, as well as offer a framework for initiating and executing community-designed projects. Conference Room A Mentorship for the Future of Sustainable Design: Why Our Cities Need the Next Generation of STEM Outreach to Focus on Careers in Sustainability Organizations such as Los Angeles Promise Fund’s, The Intern Project, Spark, and the ACE Mentor Program will introduce the state of union of STEM/STEAM outreach for local students, as well as a general organization introduction. Conference Room B

Neglected to Net Zero: Renewal of a Historic Building to a Sustainable Center for Environmental Education The Robert Redford Conservancy was once an abandoned historic building which had been damaged in a fire and has been transformed into a net zero, LEED Platinum learning center which is educating the next generation of change makers. This project serves as an example of the importance of reusing existing buildings as it relates to embodied carbon and also the opportunities around us to transform existing spaces into new purposes. Conference Room C Increasing Building Resiliency in the Era of Climate Change To safeguard our buildings against these extreme climate risks and to maintain occupant safety, it's important to think strategically about how our existing buildings and infrastructure adapt to become more resilient. Investors are applying pressure to understand and mitigate these risks and many building owners are taking proactive steps toward addressing these challenges. Experts will discuss resiliency strategies that building stakeholders can use in assessing material risks and in implementing resiliency measures. Conference Room D Viable Net Zero Water Systems from Aging Infrastructure: Magic Johnson Park, A Case Study Gary Lai, Principal of AHBE Landscape Architects and Sonny Sim, Vice President, PACE Advanced Water Engineering will examine a new model for urban water use – Net Zero Water, through their case study of Magic Johnson Park in the Willowbrook Community of Los Angeles. Net Zero Water would effectively take the community off the water grid. Gary and Sonny will describe the analysis, design and engineering needed to create a viable Net Zero system from older infrastructure. Conference Room E Beyond the Audit: Making Efficiency Easy and Enticing by Addressing Project Procurement This session reviews procurement in the public sector as a barrier to project implementation and discusses successful project procurement strategies. Best practices in everaging utility programs and partnering with contractors will be shared. The session builds on a paper currently in development for the American Council for an EnergyEfficient Economy (ACEEE). Conference Room F

PROGRAM

Break/Visit Exhibitors The Case for WELL Participants will receive first hand knowledge and experience of the WELL certification process through three different WELL case studies.  The case studies will include an example of an "All Projects In" project.  "All Projects In" is a pathway that allows certain typologies to get certified, even if WELL does not have a specific program for that building type - examples include warehouse and senior living centers.  The case studies will also address the Performance Testing process and how to actually get certified.  Finally, participants will learn how WELL is applicable to unique project types such as portfolio clients, but also to common projects such as municipal and commercial spaces. Main Hall Legal Issues in Green Construction This session will discuss the legal landscape relevant to the green construction and building industry. The presentation will discuss recent changes in the law,recent/ anticipated court decisions, and upcoming laws or bills pending in the state legislature. The discussion also includes concerns unique to contract review and negotiation on green projects, and addressing important contract terms that deal with sustainable building and risk allocation. Conference Room A The Changing Electric Utility Industry Roles & Opportunities for Local Governments The Utility Industry in California is in the midst of dramatic change – and it is not just Community Choice Energy driving that change. This presentation will discuss current and prospective changes in power supply, grid management, customer behavior and where opportunities lie for local governments. Conference Room B

Three Imperatives Your City Needs in the 21st Century Inspired by the EcoDistricts Protocol, this presentation hones in on three core areas of concern specific to the Southern California region; density, equity and resiliency. Our panel of experts approach these issues using a diverse range of perspectives, providing 10:45am solutions using big data, long term adaptable land use planning and advocacy while spurring long term economic development to provide holistic and flexible solutions throughout the region. This presentation will lightly reference several EcoDistricts case studies, however will be heavy on big data, economic development and strategic solutions. Conference Room C

Building A Sustainable LA: An Open Forum Los Angeles is undergoing a major transformation and upgrade of infrastructure 2:00pm- systems. Transportation electrification has the potential to reduce a substantial amount 4:15pm of greenhouse gas emissions. This session will engage attendees to discuss programs underway at LA Metro within procurement, contracting, major projects, construction management, and aims to investigate additional programs and strategies as proposed at the session. Main Hall Health and Wellness Design and Performance Metrics The WELL Building Standard is an innovative approach to our built environment in two ways: it focuses on the health and well-being of a building’s occupants, and is a performance-driven standard. Unique to green building standards, prescriptive design requirements are rather light in the WELL Building Standard, creating an opportunity for flexibility in design choices. However, there are stringent on-site measurement requirements that must be met during the Performance Verification, to achieve a WELL certified building. Join us in a conversation about the dynamic impacts of good design practices and the value of testing in delivering buildings that use air, light, and acoustics to improve productivity, health, and wellness. Conference Room A Invisibile Buildings: Why Are We Still Talking To Ourselves? The green building movement’s biggest problem is that the health and environmental impacts of buildings are still invisible to the general public. Let’s solve it. Conference Room B Beyond CalGREEN - What’s Next for Green Building? Now that CALGreen elevates our state building codes beyond LEED standards, how do we up our game? Both SITES and LEED for Neighborhoods offer exciting opportunities to look beyond the building to increase our environmental impacts and overall resilience. Both standards outline the treasures hidden in our green spaces, particularly our common grounds. As opposed to focusing on water use alone, they give us a structure for understanding the broad and deep impacts of our landscaping 2:00pm choices on our health as well as our fiscal, social and environmental resilience. Join us to explore how exploring this new frontier can benefit your business and LA. Conference Room C An Innovative County: The LA Countywide Sustainability Plan Following Gary Gero’s afternoon keynote, Kristen and Rita will give a 15 minute presentation to delve into further details and background about the LA Countywide Sustainability Plan. Heidi will moderate and ask the panel a handful of questions, then open it up to the audience for Q&A. Please join us to hear from the team, ask your burning questions, and find out about the path moving forward. We are just getting things kicked off and, as key stakeholders, we want to hear from you!

Conference Room D

Opportunities to Advance Sustainable Building through Transit-Oriented Development This presentation will profile two Measure M projects and explore opportunities for utilities to leverage program funding and technical expertise, alongside existing regulatory incentives, to help municipalities develop a more sustainable, resourceefficient built environment in LA.
