Forest bathing for a happier life...

“It is not so much for it’s beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

What is Forest Bathing? Also known as the Japanese art of shinrin-yoku, it promises complete mental and physical rejuvenation by being submerged in all things ‘forest’. Developed in the ‘80s, it’s a cornerstone of preventive healthcare and healing in Japanese medicine.

Does it really work..? The book “Your Brain on Nature” by Eva M. Selhub MD and Alan C.Logan ND, examines the fascinating effects that exposure to nature can have on the brain. Scientific studies have shown that natural environments can have remarkable benefits for human health. Natural environments are more likely to promote positive emotions, walking in nature has been associated with heightened physical and mental energy. It’s no surprise that fresh air is good for your health, but that doesn’t always make it easier to get a balance of healthy immersion in nature.”Your Brain on Nature” makes a case for better, healthier, greener thinking and improved mental health through exposure to green spaces and provides tips for how to apply the science of optimal brain health to everyday life. In their book, authors Eva Selhub and Alan Logan discuss research linking shinrin-yoku (Japanese “forest bathing” or “forest therapy”) to increased cerebral blood flow, immune defence and improved mental health.

Hideaways

Dunton Hot Springs is the definition of rustic luxury nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies. This perfectly restored ghost town thrives on contradictions; hand-hewn log cabins exquisitely furnished, a life-worn saloon serving food of startling quality, lung torturing trails followed by pampering massages, sensuous hot springs sitting beneath the magnificent forest.

04

Wilderness paradise Discover this winter wonderland. Where to start? Take to the groomed cross-country ski trails, or snowshoe through the vast surrounding meadows. And then there is skiing, heli-skiing, hiking and even winter horseback riding in the canyon country surrounding their vineyard.

All of Dunton’s authentically restored log cabins are full of fascinating details. All the cabins are hand-built, in some cases, by the original miners themselves. Every window affords magnificent views of the mountains and the surrounding meadows.

Words fail to describe how peaceful and unique Dunton is. Sitting in your own private sauna with the comforting sounds of the river and waterfall flowing and bubbling in the background, the world seems to disappear.

The old mining town has a sense of history which leaves you warm and relaxed. From world-class food to a team dedicated to keeping you relaxed and energised. Dunton is a gift that never fails to bring a smile of contentment to anyone who visits.

Momentum’s objects of desire... I have worn the Breitling Emergency watch for over ten years and thankfully never had to use it. To me, it’s my safety blanket I add to any adventure. The newest version is a monster, it has the latest tech and a built-in dual frequency Personal Locator Beacon. If you love your kit and love to take the path less travelled as we do, the Emergency is a trusted companion.

Icon’s are built by a dedicated team of master craftsmen. The Founder, Jonathan Ward watches over each build, magically turning vintage 4x4’s into, not just a work of art but a powerhouse, that’s as capable on the road as it is off. If you’re feeling flush and desire the ultimate 4x4 that’s authentic, stunning and genuinely unique. You have found your nirvana.

This axe is firmly placed in our kit bag. Tough as nails and more capable than Bear Grylls. The Multi-Mission Axe is a rescue and survival tool built for the unforgiving environments encountered by special forces and first responders. It also looks fantastic and beautifully balanced, this axe is as good as it gets! www.outlandequipment.com

UVU arguably design the most technically proficient kit on the planet working at the pinnacle of fabrication. Their attention to detail and their punishing testing is beyond reproach. Designed for adventure athletes who race in the Arctic to the Sahara at -40ºc to +40ºc. We love the look, the feel and unrelenting performance. www.uvuracing.com

Photograph of the month The mighty Matterhorn sits majestically in the Pennine Alps on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The first summit of the mountain was achieved in 1865 and at 4,478 m (14,692 ft) it’s regarded as one of the most famous and distinctive of all the Alpine peaks.

Journal... Chasing the Northern Lights...

What have we been up to?

Did you know 2018 is your best chance to see the Northern Lights for a decade! The Northern Lights take place on an 11-year solar cycle. From 2018, we’re well into the downswing of the cycle.

Enduro exploring in the Scottish Highlands, with 27,000 acres to play in. The team and I found adventure paradise in a landscape carved by the gods.
