It’s a time to sit back and enjoy each other’s company. To make new friends and to say good-bye to old ones who’s sons are leaving the school at the end of grade 12. We laugh, we cry, we dance, we drink and we eat. It’s our time for relaxation as we leave the outside world, well outside. Its time to be women instead of wives, mothers and chauffeurs. It’s a time to enjoy a coffee and a chat without kids interrupting or husbands complaining. It’s a time to be… just YOU, without any responsibility. Mother’s Camp for 2018 will be held from Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th March. Tickets will go on sale early in the 1st Semester of 2018, so keep an eye out for the Early College Newsletter for further information. We invite and welcome all mothers. Hope to see you there.

A note from the Principal As I write the final college newsletter for 2017, I reflect on the many blessings that we have at St Laurence’s College. I especially give thanks to the people that make up our community. The students, the staff, the parents and those associated with the College in other ways. Our preliminary Year 12 results look excellent and we wish them all well. Some families within our community are relocating to other areas and we trust that they remember their time here at St Laurence’s College fondly. Of course some staff are moving on to other opportunities and I farewell the following staff: Mary Maroske – Teacher Christine Grasso – Teacher Aide Lisa Foster – International students Varna Metcalfe – Teacher Matthew Hannan – Teacher Trevor Morrison – Teacher Donna Neander – Teacher Matthew Bibo – teacher Aide Brian Lewis – Careers Anne Browning – Teacher Jeremy Fisher – Teacher Christine Blaikie – Teacher Alexander Sullivan – Teacher Kylie Ellis – Learning Support Teacher Nicholas Parker – Learning Support Teacher Bridget Wall – Teacher Jacqulin Woods – Teacher Rebecca Rylands – Counsellor Nicoletta (Nicki) Cuolahan – Administration Assistant Counselling Many of these staff have been replacing staff on leave, some move to retirement and some to new opportunities. I wish these staff well as they move to a new start in life. The College employs over 230 staff with over 150 teachers and we work very hard to hold onto a sense of collegiality and community. 2018 promises to be an exciting year with new staff and new students and families joining our community. We will focus on continued growth and renewal. Our plan is clear. Our collective ambition is as follows: “To be a high performing Catholic school of choice, delivering contemporary curriculum to a diverse range of learners who graduate as successful, compassionate and caring Lauries’ gentleman within the charism and tradition of Edmund Rice”. To do this we will: “Engage the community to provide a clear direction that will ensure excellence and appropriate responses to the challenges of the 21st Century”. Our Five Strategic Priorities include: • Faith in Action • Student Excellence • Staff Growth and Capacity • Productive Partnerships and Profile • A confident future The full strategic plan will be available on the website in the new year. It is my hope that this 3 year plan will structure our actions to lead for even better outcomes for the students. I wish everyone a safe and Happy Christmas and I look forward to being a part of the continued growth of our unique community.

College Principal, Mr Chris Leadbetter

Facere et Docere To do and To teach

Identity Matters “Five Saturdays until Christmas!” This is what I saw on a Billboard this week on my way to work. Can you believe it? Knowing this, I thought my reflection this week will be about Christmas. I absolutely love Christmas – I am still the child who shakes gifts to determine what might be in the wrapping – this upsets my family so they now put all of my gifts in boxes! This makes guessing difficult, but not impossible! Christmas is a wonderful time of the year – a time to get together with family and friends, to share food, good times, laughter and love. But it has a more significant meaning for us as Christians. The catch phrase ‘Jesus is the reason for the season’ is pertinent as we reflect on the real meaning behind the season. Dr Chris Anthony writes about our understanding about Jesus coming again in our midst. “Jesus is born but have we found Him yet?” Christmas is a commemoration of God’s coming into the world. He came for all of us - believers and non-believers alike. His birth should bring us hope and triumph which will dispel the sadness from our lives. But after years of celebrating Christmas after Christmas, many of us are yet to see that triumph in our lives and our hopes may be giving way to despair. Has the Messiah really come? If He has where is He? Why doesn’t He bring the triumph that dispels the sadness of humanity? The real problem today is that we are waiting for God to literally come to us. We celebrate His birth just like that of any one of us - offering prayers, eating, drinking and making merry. We celebrate his coming into the world but we do not welcome Him into our hearts and lives. Yes, He has come into the world and is very much in our midst but unfortunately we refuse to recognise Him therefore fail to welcome Him. By being born to poor parents, in an environment of extreme poverty, Jesus is telling us where He dwells - not in places of majesty and glamour but among the poor and the down-trodden, the sick and dying, the hungry, the oppressed and in those we love and even in those we hate. In short He is among the masses. Amidst our celebrations this Christmas, let us pause a while to look around us to recognise that Jesus who was born into the world two thousand years ago is among us in every person and in every trial and tribulation we encounter in our lives. Let us take a moment to look around. to recognise Him in those who do not have joy and peace in their lives. Let us do the little within our means to alleviate the pain and misery in their lives. Let us do whatever we can to give them the hope that triumph will one day wipe out the sadness in the hearts. We too, like Jesus, must have the humility to come down from our positions of comfort and power to meet Him in the people around us. If we isolate ourselves from the masses by building a fortress around us with all our wealth and power together with greed, selfishness and pride, then we can keep waiting for Jesus all our lives but it will only be in vain. (http://www.catholic.org/featured/headline.php?ID=5268) So as we go into the Christmas season, I pray that you experience much joy over the holidays with family and friends and Happy Christmas and New Year. God Bless, Carolyn Kenny Dean of Identity

Strike up the Band Mr Ross Capern, Director of Instrumental Music

Music Notes Thank you As the year school draws to a close, I would like to thank all students and parents for their support of the music program this year. There have been many excellent concert performances throughout the year. I would especially like to thank the year 12 music students who finished their secondary education last week. They have given many years of commitment to the cocurricular music program attending before school rehearsals and evening concerts. It has been wonderful to watch their musical and personal development over the past 8 years. I wish all music students and family a safe and relaxing holiday.

St Ignatius Mass Last Sunday evening, the Big Brotherhood and year 12 musicians finished a great year of music learning by singing for mass at St Ignatius Church Toowong, followed by dinner at a local café. The singers are pictured with Mrs Maroske, Mrs Blaikie, Mrs Browning, Mr Leinenga and Mr Brown. The picture shows the parish choir with our boys. Thanks to all staff for supporting these boys. Mrs Ellis, Mr Brown and Mr Leinenga all work in music in the parish. The boys have done a mighty job this year, representing the college at important community events, including the funeral of Tiny Betts, an Old Boy and founding member of South’s Rugby Union Club.

2018 Co-Curricular Music All instrumental music lessons and ensemble rehearsals will commence in week 2 term 1 2018. Cafe Edmund Music Entertainment Big Band 3 entertained the crowd at Café Edmund last Friday. Their morning melodies were the culmination of a great year of music making by these keen young men.

Final Performance Prep Pictured are Year 12 Music students at school preparing for their final performances for assessment in the College. The class has done very well with at least 4 of the students already having offers for tertiary music study.

Last Brotherhood Rehearsal Pictured are members of the Brotherhood at the last rehearsal this year. The singing groups of the college work all year to build vocal fitness which is why Archbishop Mark says that St Laurence’s can sing like no-one else can. Thanks to our vocal coach Ms Ireni Utley and to Mr Brown for excellent work with this group. They spent the last rehearsal preparing for next year. It is always inspiring to work with such committed and teachers and boys.

HISTORY @ SLC - Happy Holidays! By Mr Greg Sikich, Assistant Head of Faculty - Humantities (History)

History @ SLC would like to wish all students an enjoyable holiday season. It has been an exciting year in the History curriculum area with excursions, incursions, tours, and project based research tasks that motivate critical and creative thinking skills as well as develop a high level of literacy. The History team looks forward to motivating you to achieve your potential next year, especially in our Year 10 – 12 program where enrolment numbers are on the rise! See you next year for a new adventure and fostering your arsenal of 21st Century skills.

This week in Mr Sullivan’s Year 7 History class By Mr Alex Sullivan, History Teacher In the gaps between the known and unknown is where Creativity lies and for the year 7’s this term, we have embarked on uncovering the key features of many Ancient Civilisations. For some, a journey around the Mediterranean was their destination; researching Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece. For others, a journey South-East of the Mediterranean was in order to uncover the secrets of the Ancient Indian Civilisations within the Verdic Period. The lads were tasked with journaling their research endeavours culminating in the creation of a board/card game that represented their research and civilisations as their final assessment task. A noteworthy duo was Timothy McKay and Joseph Taylor who creatively combined Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt in an all-out war styled battle ship board game. Through very detailed and insightful Research Journals, the pair created a Battleship style game that pitted the two civilisations against each other to determine the superior civilisation. Many exceptional and creative approaches to this task have been completed and each member of the Year 7 Hogan class should be proud of their achievements this year!

Old Boy Visit - Josh Slack Last Friday, Old Boy Josh Slack (Class of 1993) visited the College. A three-time Olympian in Beach Volleyball, Josh stopped by the College to speak with students about his journey and ran through some skills. Afterwards, Josh and his father Jonathan went for a quick tour of the College and over to the Hall of Fame in ERPAC to see his picture for the first time.

While retired from professional representation, Josh is still heavily involved with Volleyball Australia. He assists with team tours overseas and has been involved with preparations for the Commonwealth Games next year. On behalf of the College community, thank you to Josh and Jonathan for taking the time to visit the College. Also thank you to Mr Aguiar for organising Josh’s return ‘Back to the Hill’.
