THE FIRST LOOK Welcome from NATPE’s President & CEO, Rod Perth
D
edicated to a global content market with a clear focus on the dynamic Central and Eastern European region, NATPE Europe continues to be an important date on the international programming calendar. It is my pleasure to welcome you again to the Hilton Hotel in the beautiful city of Prague, where we are delighted to host the major U.S. studios alongside leading broadcasters, distributors and platform providers from around the world. NATPE Europe is first and foremost a market – a place where buyers and sellers can meet and conduct quality meetings in an intimate setting. We know there are numerous events, conferences and markets calling on your time and budget – but we sincerely believe that none deliver on our commitment to offering a very cost-effective forum that facilitates conversations and deals. The regional European economic situation is currently difficult, as it is in many parts of the world. Simultaneously, the business is undergoing dramatic change, which is challenging the underpinnings of traditional business models. Viewers are migrating to new platforms, traditional distribution is being disrupted by new platforms, and the ‘Internet of Things’ will increasingly move content to mobile. But throughout this
dynamic force of change there remains a constant – which is that audiences who will view it on their own devices are demanding high-quality, diverse and engaging content, and that is why this Prague event is so important. This year, in addition to the market, we have expanded our conference offering, which is up to three sessions on Monday afternoon plus a keynote breakfast on Tuesday. Our panels will examine Global Formats, Format Futures, and International Co-Productions. We have curated an outstanding lineup of experts across each of these genres who will share the benefit of what they’ve learned, and how you will succeed by attending these sessions. Our keynote breakfast session on Tuesday is with Adrian Hodges, award-winning writer and showrunner who most recently created the BBC
television series The Musketeers, which has been sold around the world and received global acclaim. An additional tool to help build connections and facilitate meetings is myNATPE, which has been upgraded this year. We encourage you to take advantage of this exclusive online system created to help you build a connected international network. We love parties too, so make plans to enjoy two great networking events. Join us at the opening cocktail reception on Tuesday from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Cloud 9 Sky Bar & Lounge – a fantastic location at the Hilton Hotel, set high above the Prague skyline. We would like to thank our sponsors Nova, TV Barrandov and APA (Czech Producers Association) for their support. On Wednesday evening we will host a party from 6:30 pm to 9 pm at the historic Municipal House, Prague’s foremost Art Nouveau building and one of the finest in Europe. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors AXN Europe (Sony) and Prague Studios for their support. I am looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible to listen and learn how we can continue to grow NATPE Europe and make a positive difference to your business. Buyers Report
Buyers are looking for a wide range of programming at NATPE||Europe. We caught up with major players from across CEE to find out what’s at the top of their shopping lists this week in Prague.
Czech TV aims to make an impact with factual and entertainment Ever since Czech Television’s portfolio of channels expanded to six in 2013, the public broadcaster’s acquisition needs have broadened considerably. That said, local entertainment and drama productions are now mainstays on the group’s main channels, CT1 and CT2. “We almost exclusively use local productions for primetime these days as acquisitions from outside don’t really work, even for our second channel,” says Maxa. “Most of our primetime slots are filled by our own productions.” However, there is space for readymade foreign dramas, Maxa says,
Jan Maxa, director of program development and formats at Czech Television but these will feature mainly on late primetime on CT2. At NATPE||Europe, the company is looking for entertainment and factual content that can match the strength of drama on its schedules. For instance, anything that can replicate the impact controversial reality program Holiday in the Protectorate (Dovolenu v Protecktoratu) has caused would be welcomed. The show, which premiered in May, has been heavily criticized throughout the Czech Republic and beyond, with many saying it
Holiday in the Protectorate
displays a lack of respect towards those who died during the Second World War. Maxa says that most of the controversy surrounding
Local drama still vital to Voyo Petr Horák, head of diversification at Central European Media Enterprises On-demand service Voyo is something of a VoD veteran in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and has used a combination of local programming and sports rights to build its viewership. The service has expanded from the Czech Republic and Romania into Croatia, Bulgaria and Slovenia and is now a key part of Central European Media Enterprises (CME)’s VoD operations, which include both free and subscription offerings. Local programming has been key to Voyo’s SVoD model. The service offers a wide array of titles – around 1,800 seasons of shows spanning all genres in the Czech Republic, for example – and its ability to provide a home to various local dramas before their linear TV release has had positive results. “We create an advanced window of local content that allows us to stream shows up to seven days in advance of their premiere on our free-to-air channels,” says Petr Horák, CME’s head of diversification, who helped set up Voyo nearly five years ago. CME’s VoD acquisitions slate is as diverse as it is lengthy, but key genres include children’s programming and dramas from around the world,
6
although waning interest in U.S. shows has tempered the company’s demand, particularly given the high cost of acquisitions. Local scripted shows are also needed, while crime series from Western Europe, particularly Germany, are also being considered. Given CME’s sprawling network of linear channels and VoD services, it’s no surprise that content from all manner of sources is considered, from small distributors to the likes of Sony Pictures TV. Movies are also contemplated, but library content has been less successful at driving new subscribers, though Horák admits it is important to customer loyalty. But Horák is clear that local content has played a “dominant role” in terms of helping to add customers, and persuaded some viewers to pay SVoD fees to dodge the ads on CME’s VoD alternatives. The exec is also confident that local shows will protect CME’s services and allow them to prepare for the likely arrival of Netflix in the CEE region over the next 12 months. Strong sports content will also bolster CME’s position while dubbed programming is another weapon in the company’s arsenal, and one that Horák says is proving particularly effective.
the program, which follows three generations of a modern family living under the same condiditions experienced during the Nazi occupation of the country after 1939, was premature. Yet Holiday in the Protectorate has been well received by younger viewers, a demographic the pubcaster has struggled to reach out to in recent years. “We always get a pleasant surprise that some of our shows are enjoyed by the younger generation, even if you wouldn’t expect them to show interest,” Maxa says. “But yes, ultimately the generation of 15- and 16-year-olds has been been lost to us in recent times.” Looking ahead, Czech Television will continue to pursue coproduction opportunities at this market and beyond, with plenty of discussions currently underway, according to Maxa. “We have just released a miniseries about Jan Hus, the 15th century Czech church reformer. It’s a co-production between Arte and ourselves – the first major coproduction we have embarked on for many years. We have many others in discussion but at this stage it is too early to talk about them.”
Buyers Report
Pro Plus looks at adding soap to its fiction formats Tomaž Kržičnik, head of acquisitions at Slovenia’s Pro Plus Group Slovenia’s Pro Plus is heading to Prague in a buoyant mood following a string of ratings successes for its original shows, including reality format Restaurant is Looking for a Boss (Gostilna išče šefa). To complement the firm’s local production prowess, Tomaž Kržičnik is at NATPE||Europe hunting for international formats. “The most visible trend for us has to be ‘local is king,’ so we’re constantly on the lookout for formats for both access and primetime,” he says. “Ideally, acquired formats are a great addition to our original programs such as Tonight’s the Night or Restaurant is Looking for a Boss.” The move takes the broadcaster, owned by Central European Media Enterprises, away from its acquisitions strategy of 2014, when Kržičnik was prioritizing telenovelas
and soaps for Pro Plus’s leading commercial channel Pop TV, as well as factual titles for both Pop TV and sister channel Kanal A. Foreign titles were also high up the shopping list. This time, Kržičnik maintains “formats are growing in importance for us.” Yet it’s a tricky balancing act for the buyer, whose acquisition strategy allows little room for failure – simply because the luxury of big budgets in a country of two million people just isn’t there. Meanwhile, buying programs for two sets of viewing requirements – Pop TV and Kanal A – remains no easy task, especially as the firm’s subscription video-on-demand service Voyo becomes more of a priority. “We are having a problem when rights are not cleared for ondemand as well,” he adds.
Restaurant is Looking for a Boss
But the past year has been one of great change in the market, according to Kržičnik, who has noticed a growing trend for what he calls the “hybridization” of fiction formats. “In the past, when a telenovela supplier mentioned words like ‘crime’ and ‘soap’ in the same sentence we would flatly reject the pitch,” he adds. “Now, we get a lot of primetime material offered with a heavy infusion of soap elements. This type of programming comes from
reputed generalist European suppliers from Italy, the Nordics and the U.K., as well as from more specific genre distributors.” The large number of dramas now on offer to buyers impresses Kržičnik, who praises the quality of product on show at international markets such as NATPE||Europe. “There is a very visible broadening of series on offer, challenging the standard output of U.S. majors,” he adds. “There is at least one quality TV title in each distributor’s catalogue these days.”
Nurturing Nova needs reality and fiction for thematic nets Alexandra Ruzek, programming director at Czech broadcaster Nova Group Czech Republic broadcaster Nova Group’s six channels demand a steady supply of programming that attracts both a broad audience for its flagship network and niche series for its thematic channels. TV Nova and its five siblings – Nova Cinema, male-focused Fanda, comedy net Smíchov, archive net Telka and Nova Sport – ensure Alexandra Ruzek, programming director for the group, has a tight grasp on trends and she immediately identifies the importance of local content to drive audience share. “Nova’s primetime schedule is practically filled with local content, including our long-running daily soap The Street and primetime dramas like Rose Garden Medical 2 and Policie Modrava,” says Ruzek. However, opportunities for foreign programming remain, particularly localized versions of international formats, and the channel has enjoyed success
with reality and entertainment series such as FremantleMedia’s Idols. Nova’s bouquet of networks also means that opportunities for international distributors often lie away from the CME-owned broadcaster’s flagship network. “U.S. and Western European products have increasing importance in building and growing audiences on our thematic channels. Whereas our
Policie Modrava
flagship channel picks up strong mass-audience brands like CSI and NCIS as well as Hollywood blockbusters, our thematic channels are able to experiment with more niche content.” However, that doesn’t mean Ruzek has Nova’s schedule sewn up. She’s still on the lookout for “strong movies and mass-audience series, as well as reality formats and fiction for adaptation.” On the thematic front, Ruzek is after “strong, longrunning sitcoms” for Smíchov, while Fanda needs male-orientated shows and some sports programming. A key driver, however, remains local programming, and Ruzek says that among her top shows “are news, local fiction
series and local entertainment shows.” The seventh run of docureality series Wife Swap attracted a share of almost 40% in the main target group, Ruzek says, and “key programming pillars” remain Rose Garden Medical 2 and daily soap The Street. Nova is also working with its VoD siblings, including Nova Plus and subscription VoD service Voyo (see page 6), to offer catch-up opportunities, but scripted is not the only driver for Ruzek. “To provide an alternative to local fiction series we plan two big entertainment shows in the autumn: SuperStar and MasterChef,” she adds. Ruzek says she hopes the shows, from ITV Studios and Endemol Shine Group respectively, will “bring something new and exciting” to the market. “The main challenge is always to choose the best new projects for the future that will exceed our viewer’s expectations,” she says.

Markíza TV’s balancing act takes in originals and imports Horná Dolná
Polsat keeps its options open Piotr Fajks, member of the board, chief of TV4 and TV6, Polsat, Poland No genre is off the table for Polsat-owned channels TV4 and TV6 at this year’s NATPE||Europe and channel head Piotr Fajks will be there hunting for “quality product” for the two general entertainment channels this time around. “When it comes to readymade series, we are looking for everything that’s universal,” he says. “We serve the 16- to 49-year-old demographic, so we need content that appeals to the broad audience.” Fajks is also seeking new ideas from the international format market. “We want to see what’s cooking in the region and how we can import this product into Poland,” he adds. “Within the past two years, we have seen a wave of lifestyle shows emerge, dealing with subjects such as cooking and cleaning. But you never know what’s coming next. It’s like surfing; you have to prepare for the second wave. But sometimes you don’t know what that’s going to look like and you have to guess what’s going to be next.” TV4 has a history of airing solid-performing formats such as Dragons’ Den and Survivor. So Fajks continues to look for shows that standout this time around. Science entertainment format Galileo, from Germany’s Red Arrow International, for instance, has performed well on TV4, says Fajks, while local Polish dramas are Galileo also resonating with domestic audiences. But in Prague, it’s important to take a step back and observe all the trends, he says. “Usually we will make assessments from direct meetings and talks with our colleagues throughout the region. So we’ll see where we are going from there,” he adds. For now, Fajks is keeping the ship steady at TV4 and TV6 and his mission is clear. “We have our aims, objectives and market share and we are exactly in line with what we had planned,” he says.

Peter Chalupa, head of acquisitions at Markíza TV, Slovakia Slovakian broadcaster Televízia Markíza has been balancing its schedule to reflect an uptick in demand for local productions while also offering foreign imports. It’s an eclectic mix that sees Peter Chalupa, the broadcaster’s head of acquisitions, considering U.S. scripted series and popular entertainment formats alongside local dramas and comedies. “The trend is for more hours of local fiction series produced by Slovak channels, and it has brought a further push for better quality and creativity in storytelling,” he says. While that pattern of demand for original production is growing, Chalupa is keen to find both finished program acquisitions and formats that could be successfully rebooted. Entertainment shows have kept attracting Slovak viewers, he adds, but the key is to ensure high enough production values. Chartshow, a music series based on RTL’s format The Ultimate Chart Show, has been airing in Wednesday primetime to good effect and is expected to be renewed for another season. Locally made comedy shows
have also enjoyed success, such as Horná Dolná (In the Middle of Nowhere), but Chalupa adds that while such long-running local series are “the core of Markíza’s schedule,” foreign programming and international series are still required. Such shows “add color and variety to the programming mix,” he says, adding that foreign content remains dominant in primetime slots on the broadcaster’s smaller channels including female-skewing Doma and male-focused Dajto. “U.S. studios remain our key partners to cover our need for premiere blockbuster movies and U.S. series – both scripted and non-scripted.” That means Warner Bros. and CBS Studios shows such as Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, NCIS and Under the Dome have all been brought in and now occupy slots on Markíza and its sister channels. The broadcaster has also recently added Sony drama Outlander to its network Doma, while CBS’s Scorpion is set to air on Markíza. But Chalupa is open to deals with European producers and distributors as well, and has added series such as the BBC’s Musketeers to its slate along with Turkish telenovelas and other European scripted series. The network has employed the formula of using locally produced content to draw viewers into U.S. series such as Arrow previously, and maintaining such a balance across the content spectrum is a top prority. Further seasons of popular international formats are also being considered, with both Chartshow and a fourth run of The Farm enjoying particular success over the past 12 months. Also in Chalupa’s sights are current affairs programming, event shows and non-scripted series, including sports. Coupled with local series such as weekday stripped drama Búrlivé Víno (Taste of Love), Chalupa is aiming to attract a broad audience to Markíza, with U.S. acquisitions and European series peppering both its schedule and those of sister networks Doma and Dajto.

NBCU reports global content still has universal appeal Elizabeth Squires, director of acquisitions for emerging markets at NBCUniversal International Networks Local programming might be the name of the game for many buyers attending NATPE||Europe, but series acquired from around the world continue to attract viewers in the region as audience tastes broaden to take in all manner of programming. “We’ve noticed a marked increase in demand for international content over the past year or so,” says Elizabeth Squires, the UK-based director of acquisitions for emerging markets at NBCUniversal International Networks. Squires oversees acquisitions for a portfolio of NBCU channels in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Russia, along with networks in Benelux and Africa. In CEE, her attention is focused on four channels: movie network Universal Channel, science fiction channel SyFy, suspense and thriller-themed 13th Street and female-skewing channel Diva. While U.S. shows, especially
strong procedurals that repeat well, have long had a place on the schedules in the CEE region, Squires says tastes have now developed to embrace an array of series that hail from the likes of France, Germany and Australia, with crime particularly popular. Reflecting the diverse channels under her control in CEE, Squires’ Prague shopping list includes an eclectic range of programming. “We’re seeking a wide range of territory premiere content from compelling, character-driven action procedurals to engaging non-scripted crime documentaries,” she explains.
Also on the most-wanted list are features and TV movies, and Squires is quick to point out that the availability of non-linear rights is also “an important consideration when choosing content.”
The Librarians
It’s further proof, if any were needed, of the growing interest in online and OTT services among viewers in the region. “The rise of video-on-demand across CEE is something we are all watching closely. We have to be even more reactive in curating and scheduling exclusive territory premiere content, as well as securing nonlinear rights that complement our linear offerings,” she adds. Although local series have become a common trend for many buyers, Squires says U.S. series such as the long-running Law & Order and CSI franchises continue to perform for her networks. Major recent successes have included TNT drama The Librarians, which premiered across NBCU channels in CEE during December and was, according to Squires, a huge hit. “We have also been very encouraged by the performance of shortform crime dramas, such as Les Témoins [Witnesses], while movies are regular strong performers.”
HRT looks within to replace declining Turkish imports Saša Runjić, director of programs at HRT, Croatia With Turkish drama gradually declining in popularity in Croatia, the demand for replacement product to fill the gap continues to grow. For pubcaster HRT, the programming mission is “always about local,” says director of programmes Saša Runjić, as the broadcaster begins to garner larger numbers of eyeballs with own-produced shows, such as its local version of Talpa Media’s singing competition format The Voice. But what pleases Runjić most is the way that HRT is now appealing to younger viewers after years of “playing catch-up” with new media. “The media landscape is rapidly changing and in the past we have been slow to catch up with new media,” he says. “But now we have just about got there and that’s why we are really happy with shows like The Voice, which we produce in-house. It’s not just because it’s a primetime TV show, I’m pleased because we have touched younger audiences with it and they are starting to come to HRT for this type of program.” This year, the company is hunting for documentary and primetime family entertainment formats, with HRT’s head of acquisitions, Đelo Hadžiselimović, and his team of buyers attending NATPE||Europe on the acquisitions trail, although Runjić says the company is currently developing its own properties. This remains vital for the broadcaster as
foreign product in its primetime schedules The Voice slowly begins to decline in popularity. In recent years, Turkish drama has been a primetime mainstay, with Croatian broadcasters such as RTL Televizija airing series including Global Agency’s Binbir Gece (1,001 Nights), first shown on Kanal D, and crime drama Ezel, produced by Ay Yapim for diginet Show TV and distributed by Eccho Rights. But Runjić believes that trend is now coming to a “natural end,” with local programming pushing Turkish product into daytime slots and secondary channels. “The Turkish production market is very big and people will always watch their shows. So you can’t say the trend will die, and I’m sure it will prevail in some way,” he adds. Runjić also claims there’s “great interest” in developing content in the Balkan market and believes there is more room for coproductions. “The small independent producers are already doing it and what is very clear to us is that all the content produced in the Balkan region is garnering huge ratings,” he says. “What’s good is that whatever you produce in Croatia almost immediately sells into Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Montenegro.”

Banaxi in expansive mood as it takes on pirates in CEE Erik Uxa, acquisitions manager, Banaxi, Pan-European Pan-European VoD service Banaxi might be based in Cyprus but its sights are currently trained on Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), with plans for extensive expansion over the coming years. The company launched its subscription VoD services in Poland, Hungary and Serbia last year following its debut in Cyprus in 2012. It offers white-label products as well as its own transaction- and advertising-supported VoD offerings. Banaxi has already linked up with Tesco in the Czech Republic, where the Banaxi Clubcard Kino service targets the supermarket’s loyalty card holders, and is aiming to move into 20 territories across the region. “The popularity of VoD services is increasing generally,” says Erik Uxa, Banaxi’s recently appointed acquisitions manager, although he admits that piracy remains the overriding challenge to his company’s success. However, the aim is to ensure Banaxi, which is backed by German smart
TV portal provider NetRange, attracts users with the “friendliness of the service, payment methods, its accessibility/availability and the quality of the offered videos (SD, HD, 3D, UHD).” Banaxi already hosts programming such as Netflix’s version of House of Cards in the Czech Republic, while an array of movies are also available including The Bucket List, The Golden Compass and the reboot of Rush Hour. Uxa says he has noticed a “significant increase” in local production across CEE with demand for such programming reflected online, and believes VoD is well placed to provide further opportunities to local producers and distributors. Many of Banaxi’s shows are available in HD and Banaxi is bullish that the firm’s services can compete with the anticipated arrival of Netflix in CEE during the next 12 months. Indeed, as the VoD market matures, likely supported by Netflix’s expected marketing push, Banaxi will be hoping to tap into the increased interest in SVoD to power further growth.
Onet seeks shortform and docs to spearhead Polish ambitions Justyna Troszczyńska, senior manager, Grupa Onet, Poland Polish VoD company Grupa Onet is on the lookout for documentaries and factual series here at NATPE||Europe as it prepares to enter a new phase of growth in the country’s burgeoning OTT market. VoD uptake in Poland has seen a noticeable increase in recent years, and while viewers have traditionally preferred advertising-supported services, operators believe that subscription-funded ventures will become increasingly popular. “The Polish VoD market is
growing rapidly and the biggest trend we see is that paid services are becoming real competitors to piracy and illegal platforms,” says Justyna Troszczyńska, Krakow-based Grupa Onet’s senior manager. She adds that while ad-supported VoD remains the “best way” to monetize content, the appeal of SVoD services will grow. Drama remains a key driver for Troszczyńska, with local
programming of particular interest. Part of the reason for this is that U.S. studio series and features have traditionally taken too long to reach local audiences, leaving a large window of opportunity for illegal operators. The hope is that as SVoD services gain ground, the windowing possibilities will change radically and ensure viewers can access programs legally with almost no delay after their U.S. debuts. However, interest at present
Weekend formats invited to join RTL Klub Blanka Poth, format manager, RTL Klub, Hungary Hungarian network RTL Klub’s acquisition strategy has touched on most genres over recent years and here at NATPE||Europe its executives are looking to build on the recent success of both scripted and reality formats. At the top of its wish list, says RTL Klub’s format manager Blanka Poth, are weekend primetime shows, following on from the broadcaster’s local version of FremantleMedia and Syco Entertainment’s worldwide hit Got Talent. RTL Klub has also been adapting scripted formats, and earlier this year ordered a local version of Talpa Media’s Dutch dramedy series Divorce, about three men going through messy break-ups. The series, which is in its third season on RTL4 in the Netherlands, joins other local remakes on the RTL Group-owned Hungarian network, including Budapest Day & Night.

The constructed reality format follows the day-to-day lives of eight young people cohabiting in a trendy apartment and was first made by Filmpool for RTL2 in Germany. It has also been a hit in Hungary over the past couple of years for RTL Klub. Poth says the latest series enjoyed “really good ratings,” adding that reality and constructed reality are both arguably leading programming demands in Hungary. In addition, locally produced cooking formats have performed well. International finished scripted programming has also found a place on RTL Klub’s schedules, including series from the U.S. such as crime dramas Bones and Castle and FBI series Criminal Minds. Alongside that sit Turkish dramas, which have also proven popular with some viewers, including Global Agency’s Magnificent Century. Poth adds that while she has her plans for the fall already in place, she is now looking for programming that can find its way on to the schedules in 2016.
remains focused on more local series, with Czech comedies and German horror shows working well. Troszczyńska is looking for programs that can make their appearance on Axel Springerowned Onet’s services in the third and fourth quarters of this year, and has put unscripted programming at the top of her wish list. “This year, we are most interested in shortform shows, documentaries and series, even factual, because this type of content is the most attractive to our users on a daily basis,” she says. On the factual front, the company has acquired several shows from the international market in recent months, including Sky Living’s Forbidden Love (5x60’) and BBC4 doc The Toilet (1x60’) from Sky Vision, as well as Sharkpocalypse (1x60’) and Journey into the Dark Ages with Ken Follet (2x60’) from the same U.K.based distributor. Troszczyńska adds that she is also focusing attention on developing Onet’s own programming and has original productions in her sights. The company’s plan is to produce its own drama and factual series, which are being prepared to premiere online later this year and in 2016. Co-productions have also been penciled in as Troszczyńska attempts to use acquired U.S. shows and European series, coupled with popular local programming, to woo users to its services and away from pirated content.
