Allowing Our Children to Thrive and Still Enjoy the Advantages of Technology By Tammi Pitzen, Executive Director Children’s Advocacy Center of Jackson County

T

echnology whether we like it or not, is here to stay. There are tons of safety reasons not to give your child free reign on the World Wide Web. Some of those are more obvious but a hidden danger is cheating your child out of building his or her inner resiliency by leaving them to their techno devices too much! We need to realize that being proficient on devices and in technology is a must to succeed in our world. Here are some tips to keep a balance. • Limit the time per day or per week that your child is allowed time on devices. Set a timer! (or you will get distracted and that hour will turn into four) • Try to find things that you can engage with your child both on the technology device and off. •

little time. Every time we master one platform another is created. It is hard to keep up but it is IMPORTANT that we do if we are going to allow our children to have and use electronic devices or cell phones. • Talk to your children about the dangers of connecting on line. Explain that the person who says they are a 9 year old boy just like your child……may really be an adult trying to trick him. • Some parents create device contracts outlining the rules and the consequences if the rules are broken and have their child sign along with themselves to insure that the expectations are clear. You can hang this contract up on the fridge as a reminder. No arguing when it is broken. Just enforce the consequences. Be consistent. • Talk to the parents of your child’s friends about your rules. If your child goes and spends time at their house, they can help to enforce the rules even when you are not around.

Set up the passwords to devices, accounts, programs etc. If they are younger children, do not share them but enter them in order to monitor their access. If they are older, change them after they sign in so you are aware when they access these account or set up a way to be alerted when anyone signs into these accounts.

• Create a plan where your child earns electronics time. In addition to his regular chores, if he does extra chores, or reads over his required daily time or practices piano longer than required he will earn extra time on his devices. • Enforce a no electronics at the dinner table rule. Follow this rule yourself. No cell phones at the dinner table. • Take some classes regarding social media uses. We may have to invest a

The above are just some small ideas. If you are not tech savvy, you really should find a class somewhere that will help you. Maybe a computer teacher at your child’s school could give you some pointers. Sometimes you may find a class offered at churches or the library—and of course on line. The more we create opportunities for our children to be active in social activities, the more we can counter act the impact these devices have on their social developments. We need to give our children opportunity to practice social interaction, to react to disappointment, to carry on conversation with an actual person; to gain life experience while they are still under our protective wings. If they spend all their time on devices they will grow up believing that is reality. We can do better than that.

It’s not a bird, it’s not a dinosaur - but it is a pterosaur!

pening on Saturday, April 28th, Pterosaurs: Ancient Rulers of the Sky is ScienceWorks’ newest exhibit. Pterosaurs explores what a pterosaur is (and is not), when and where they lived, how they moved and ate, and how diverse the Pterosauria order is. The exhibit is geared towards a 6th-grade reading level, but families with both younger and older children will find things to do. Compare yourselves against the scale model of the Quetzalcoatlus, the largest pterosaur known at 18 feet tall and with wingspan of 31 feet. Examine the fossils of the more-commonly known Pteronodon and Pterodacytl species to see the variety of sizes and shapes that a pterosaur had. For those looking for an interactive, virtual-reality environment, two stations are set up so that you can pretend to be a pterosaur, flying through the sky to catch your dinner of bugs, or to avoid being eaten for dinner yourself! Release your artistic side with a third VR station that allows you to investigate the colors, feathers, skin, blades, bills and wings that pterosaurs had, and design your own! As the summer progresses, additional stations and options will be added to the exhibit, so be sure to visit more than once to see how the exhibit changes and grows. Entry to the exhibit is included with the price of admission to the museum, and the exhibit will be open to the public from April 28th through December 31st. Starting in May, the museum’s days and hours will change to TuesdaySunday, 10AM - 5PM for both the academic year and summer months. The museum will be closed on April 1st (Easter Sunday). Summer camp registration will open to the general public on Monday, April 9th (members receive registration one week in advance). City of Medford Railroad Park Opens for the Season

O

pening day for Medford Railroad Park is Sunday, April 8th! Dozens of volunteers have been working hard to bring you an even more special park! Ride diesel trains and a motor car, view unique model railroad layouts and the Hogwarts Express, ride Thomas and Percy, tour historical railroad equipment and more. Bring the whole family, pack a lunch or eat at the Park. It’s fun for all ages. Medford Garden Railroaders. See a G-scale logging railroad, trolley barn and lines, and seaport areas, including five water features! A separate Thomas and Friends garden railway will especially please the youngest railroad lovers, and the Hogwarts layout, added for Harry Potter fans, is designed so that tweens can run the Hogwarts Express train by remote control. New this year “Butterfly Garden” with over 150 plants designed to attract butterflies, bats & Osprey. Rogue Valley Model Railroad Club. Ten HO scale trains, engines whining and horns blaring, operate across hundreds of scale miles of track, through working signals and crossing gates at the Highway 99 railroad crossing, between Medford and Klamath Falls, on the Pacific and Eastern Railroad, including the heavily forested climb out of Keno along the Klamath River. Children can help operate trains on a special HO layout. The Southern Oregon Live Steamers. 2018 is their 37th year of offering free train rides to the public. Pulled by a variety of locomotives on almost two miles of track, each exciting train ride takes about nine minutes to go over and through all the tunnels, bridges and hills. The park favorite for the very young

is the Thomas and Friends loop encircling the large Garden Railroad layout, with Thomas and Percy leading special trains built for small kids only. The Southern Oregon Railway Historical Society. Tour restored 1910 and 1942 cabooses and a 1959 flanger (a type of snowplow), and view restoration work under way on Medco 4 a local 1925 steam locomotive. Ride the motor car, visit the Museum, and the “Learning Caboose.” The Railroad Park is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of each month from April through October. The park is operated by volunteers, and admission and parking are free. No tax monies are used in the operation of this park. All four clubs rely on the generosity of the public for donations to help offset the various costs involved in maintaining and expanding this one-of-a-kind Northwest attraction. This popular attraction is a unique collaboration between the City of Medford Parks and Recreation Department, the Medford Fire Department, and the four volunteer-based clubs. The Railroad Park is located adjacent to Fire Station No. 4 at the intersection of Table Rock Road and Berrydale Avenue in Medford, just a few blocks north of the Rogue Valley Mall. Note: Parking is limited. We encourage visitors to carpool or use public transport when possible.

Managing the “Baby Blues” Perinatal Mental Health Presentation Comes to Grants Pass

B

ecoming a parent is a major adjustment and can be a tough transition. Did you know that in Oregon, 1 in 4 new mothers report experiencing depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy? Research also shows that about 80% of all new mothers experience the “Baby Blues” in the first weeks after a baby arrives. At least 1 in 7 mothers and 1 of 10 fathers experience serious depression or anxiety during the mother’s pregnancy or postpartum. Despite how common mental health concerns are, there are many myths about parenthood and mental health that are hard to avoid. One of these myths is that women are scared by learning more about things like depression or anxiety. The truth is, the more women know and understand about their mental health, available resources, and risks or signs of perinatal mood disorders, the better they are at making choices for their care and avoiding crises. That’s why the Josephine County Perinatal Task Force and Health Care Coalition of Southern Oregon are bringing Wendy Davis, Executive Director of Postpartum Support International, to Grants Pass on May 10th to discuss mood disorders, resources, and risks. A focus group from 9-10:30 am at the Women’s Health Center is seeking mothers who are willing to discuss their personal experiences with mental health and available treatment options in Josephine County. If you are interested in participating in the focus group and receiving a $25 gift card, please contact Annie at (541) 816-8263. Afternoon sessions open to the public will focus on information about the services provided by Postpartum Support International as well as how to

identify common symptoms of perinatal mood disorders and how to best find support for families who are experiencing them. Please find registration information at hccso.org/events. For updated information, follow Health Care Coalition of Southern Oregon on Facebook. If you or someone you might benefit from contacting Postpartum Support International, call 1-800-944-4PPD (4773) or visit www.postpartum.net. Services are available in English and Spanish.

TRUE JUICE: First Restaurant in Grants Pass to Earn Blue Zones® Approved Status On September 9, 2016, True Juice opened its doors on “D” Street, and became Grants Pass’s first dedicated all-organic Juice & Smoothie Bar… and business has been booming ever since. Now, True Juice has also earned the prestigious position of being the first Blue Zones Approved restaurant in the Rogue Valley! The Blue Zones Project® launched in Grants Pass in January , and nationally it is helping transform communities across the U.S. into areas where making healthy choices is easier and people live longer with a higher quality of life. The mission of the Blue Zones Project® and True Juice seemed like a match made in heaven. Through a multimonth process True Juice submitted recipes, policies, menus, restaurant protocols – and even personal Crew employee commitments- for review to Blue Zones® Grants Pass; and in mid-March, they received word congratulating them on their official well-deserved Blue Zones®Approved status. Local owners, Jacob and Karen Austin, started out as regular home-juicers and Certified Integrative Health Coaches who saw the need for an all-organic restaurant/Juicery option in Grants Pass back in 2015. Their vision was to open a plant-based, organic Family-style juice bar which also served smoothies, smoothie bowls, food and treats, with many gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free options to meet the needs of those with food allergies, sensitivities and other health concerns/preferences. Believing that business could be a tool to create

positive change, Karen and Jake jumped in to invest in the health and happiness of their southern Oregon customers and community while hoping to inspire other individuals and companies to do the same. Today True Juice creates delicious and nutritious recipes using produce from a network of local organic farms including Pennington Farms, Howard Family Orchards, Promiseland Farm, and others. Their menu has expanded beyond juice, smoothies and smoothie bowls to also include sandwiches, soup, chili, quiche, gluten-free baked goods, chocolate treats, banana parfaits, MultiDay Juice Cleanse Packages, Quinoa Bowls, wraps (both turkey and vegetarian), snow cones, house-made Nut Mylks, Wellness Shots, cold brew coffee, teas and a whole array of Kombuchas, fruit and snacks… all organic, much of it local and/or house-made, and all of it delicious AND Nutritious. Additional fun facts are that they give their daily juice pulp to local organic livestock, and all of their to-go cups, straws, containers, and utensils are compostable If you haven’t already, drop in to True Juice and relax with green juice or coffee in their artistic, upcycled atmosphere, or take your family in to enjoy a delicious lunch, prafait or smoothie bowl. True Juice is located at 126 NW D Street in Historic Downtown Grants Pass. 541-441-4541 They are open M-F: 9-5… and Saturdays from 10-2.
