CORROBOREE A special performance of traditional Wadawurrung dance and song will be performed by firelight at Sovereign Hill on Friday 3 June. While this is a free community event, tickets must be ordered through Eventbrite and produced at the gate (https://goo.gl/mLbfFa). Food with a bush twist will be available for purchase. The Wadawurrung People are the traditional owners of the land we know as Ballarat. In the 1830s, Europeans settled in Victoria and farmed sheep across its grassy plains, with an enormous impact on the Aboriginal People living there. In 1851, following the discovery of gold, hundreds of thousands of international fortune-seekers rushed to the Ballarat goldfields, and a city began to take shape. The lifestyles of the Wadawurrung People changed dramatically as a result of these waves of immigration, but many of their descendants still live in the region.

During the Gnarrwirring Ngitj Festival, catch special daytime street performances which highlight the ways in which Aboriginal People participated in, and responded to, the gold rushes in Ballarat. See the board at the Sovereign Hill Post Office (Map 16) or in the Victoria Theatre (Map 26) for details.

We acknowledge that the land on which Sovereign Hill stands is the country of Ballarat’s traditional owners: the Wadawurrung People. To formally recognise the relationship we now share as custodians of this land, Sovereign Hill will unveil an Acknowledgement of Country sign in front of the Outdoor Museum. Take a special tour of Sovereign Hill which highlights the goldrush experiences of Aboriginal People.

On National Sorry Day, Sovereign Hill will host prominent Aboriginal history expert Dr Fred Cahir for a talk entitled ‘Rethinking our National Identity’. Tickets are free, but a seat must be booked through Eventbrite. (https://goo.gl/MJr14i).

In the 19th century, many European gentlemen collected artefacts from other cultures. Dr Sydney Pern’s collection is usually closed to the public. On this tour, you have the opportunity to see some of the most curious Australian and Pacific Island artefacts collected by Dr Pern. Visitors with admission tickets to Sovereign Hill or the Gold Museum on 29/05/16 need only book a free place on the tour through Eventbrite. BASKET WEAVING

Take part in a traditional basket weaving workshop with two highly respected Tasmanian Aboriginal artists descended from the Bunurong people of Victoria. Learn how to weave your very own basket and meet Aunty Verna and Aunty Leonie. Join these workshops at the Horse Bazaar on Sovereign Hill’s Main Street. NARMBOOL WALK

Come for a guided tour of our historic pastoral property, Narmbool, to learn about some exciting new archaeological finds which are deepening our understanding of Wadawurrung land use, cultural practices and the pre-contact economy.
