THE PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE

A DIVISION I FCS CONFERENCE

2017 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK OFFENSIVE

DEFENSIVE

SPECIAL TEAMS

Mike White, Marist

David Leisring, Dayton

Patrick Sandler, Dayton

White accounted for three touchdowns in Marist’s 38-17 PFL victory against Stetson, Saturday. He finished the game with 395 offensive yards, passing for 337 yards on 32of-47 passing while rushing for 58 yards on nine carries and also had a pass reception for four yards. After passing for a touchdown in the first half, White used his legs to break a 17-17 tie in the fourth quarter, scrambling for an 18-yard touchdown run. He then tacked on an insurance score with a 12-yard touchdown run late in the game. His 32 completions were a career high and the second-highest total in program history.

Leisring led Dayton’s defense with 13 tackles in a 25-23 upset victory over Southeast Missouri, Saturday. The 13 stops were a career best for the junior and he also led the Flyers with six solo tackles. In addition, Leisring was credited with an interception and pass break up in the contest. His pass breakup helped stall a Southeast Missouri drive in the third quarter, forcing a field goal. His interception came two drives later and ended a Redhawks drive before it could get any momentum.

Sandler made four field goals to help Dayton down Southeast Missouri, 25-23, Saturday. His four field goals made were the most by any FCS kicker this season and tied the Dayton record. Sandler made kicks of 32, 25 and 25 yards in the first half as Dayton built a 16-7 lead. He tacked on a 38-yarder with 2:59 left that provided the game-winning points.

Junior (RS) | Quarterback Woodbury, New York

Junior | Safety Cincinnati, Ohio

Freshman | Kicker Greenwood, Indiana

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES IN WEEK 2 •

JEB BOUDREAUX, LB (Stetson) – Boudreaux had his own strip sack in the Stetson-Marist contest and it also was returned for a touchdown as the Hatters jumped out to an early lead. He finished with nine tackles (all solo), a tackle for loss, sack, fumble forced and was credited with two quarterback hurries.

JEROME BROOKS, LB (Morehead State) – Brooks had 2.5 tackles for loss against a reclassifying Liberty squad, while also finishing with eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

MALICK CARR, LB (Marist) – Carr led the Red Foxes with 2.5 tackles for loss and tied for the team best with eight tackles in a PFL-opening win against Stetson. One of his tackles for loss was a crucial strip sack which was returned 20 yards for a touchdown by teammate Ruben Avalos III to give Marist the lead for good.

ANDREW FOSTER, K (Morehead State) – Foster’s 53-yard field goal against Liberty was the second-longest by an FCS kicker this season and the longest field goal of Week 2. It is the longest field goal made in the PFL since Billy Cundiff’s PFL record 62-yard boot in 2000.

GRANT KRAEMER, QB (Drake) – Kraemer tied a Drake record with six touchdown passes as part of a 20-of-27 passing performance against Southwestern (Kan.). He finished with 313 passing yards in the victory.

ANTHONY OLIVENCIA, P (Marist) – Olivencia booted just four punts but averaged 41 yards per punt in Marist’s win against Stetson. He placed two boots inside the 15-yard line and two of those made it inside the 10-yard line. The Hatters had zero return yards on his punting effort.

JIMMY SEEWALD, QB (Valparaiso) – Seewald’s 424 passing yards against Duquesne were the most by a Valparaiso quarterback since the 2013 season (Eric Hoffman) and were the most against a Division I opponent since 2003. He posted career highs in completions (26) and touchdown passes (four).

2017 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE PFL MARIST FIRST TO WIN IN PFL PLAY | Marist became the first to win a PFL contest this season when it defeated Stetson, 38-17, in Week 2 action. It is the second consecutive year Marist has opened its league slate with a victory. The PFL regular-season race begins in earnest during Week 4’s action with five league contests scheduled, including the unbeaten Red Foxes who will host Jacksonville that week. WILDCATS’ DUGGER RUNNING WILD | Davidson freshman running back Wesley Dugger

has motored to a quick start, compiling 313 rushing yards in his first two collegiate games. His 156.5 rushing yards per game ranks fifth among all FCS runners this young season and it is second among rookie runners. Monmouth’s Pete Guerriero leads freshmen with 164 rushing yards per game.

SANDLER BOOTS A QUARTET OF FGs | Dayton freshman Patrick Sandler became the first FCS kicker with four field goals made in a game this season with his 4-for-5 outing against Southeast Missouri in Week 2. He leads all FCS kickers with five field goals made in the season’s first two weeks. Only 10 FCS kickers made four or more field goals last season. CRUSADERS SURGING | Valparaiso’s offense has enjoyed a resurgence in the season’s first

two weeks, its 480.5 total yards per game ranking 15th among FCS programs and leading the PFL. The Crusaders ran up 450 offensive yards against Montana in Week 1 before tacking on 511 offensive yards against Duquesne. Valparaiso averaged just 300 offensive yards per game last season, ranking 106th among FCS teams.

PFL’s 25TH CAMPAIGN | The 2017 season marks the 25th year for the Pioneer Football

League – the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The league will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA FCS Championship.

FIVE PFL ALUMNI ON NFL ACTIVE ROSTERS | The opening week of NFL action five PFL

alumni listed on NFL active rosters. Marist alumni Terrence Fede (Miami) and Jason Myers (Jacksonville) returned to their teams for 2017. Drake’s Eric Saubert (Atlanta), San Diego’s Jamal Agnew (Detroit) and Stetson’s Donald Payne (Jacksonville) are the league’s newest alumni to make an NFL roster in 2017.

EIGHT FIRST-TEAM ALL-PFL RETURNEES HIGHLIGHT PRESEASON SQUAD | San Diego, the defending PFL Champion, returns four First-Team All-PFL selections among its seven preseason picks, including quarterback Anthony Lawrence. Dayton, last season’s PFL runner up, had two returning first-team selections on the team while Campbell and Marist return one first-teamer each. SAN DIEGO PICKED TO WIN PFL | For the seventh consecutive year, the University of San

Diego has been picked to win the Pioneer Football League regular-season race in a preseason vote of the league’s coaches. San Diego, which won the 2016 regular-season title then advanced to the second round of the FCS Championship, again received the coaches’ nod to win the 2017 PFL title. The Toreros were chosen just ahead of Dayton in polling that was dominated by the two teams. San Diego and Dayton combined to receive all available first-place votes and also claimed all but two of the possible second-place votes.

DAYTON’S SCORING STREAK HITS 456 GAMES | The nation’s longest streak of games without being shutout belongs to Dayton, which extended the streak to 456 games with its Week 2 victory against Southeast Missouri. That streak includes 261 games as a FCS member, which ranks fourth all-time among FCS programs. Montana holds the FCS’ longest streak without being shutout at 371 games which dates back to 1989. On the FBS side, Florida holds the nation’s longest streak of games without being shutout at 362, dating back to the 1988 season. The Flyers streak dates back to 1976 when it suffered a 9-0 loss to Marshall. TWO PFL ALUMNI SELECTED IN 2017 NFL DRAFT | In a milestone moment for the Pio-

neer Football League, Drake tight end Eric Saubert and San Diego defensive back Jamal Agnew were each selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The PFL was one of five Division I FCS conferences to have two players selected in the draft. The PFL joined the Colonial Athletic Association, Big Sky Conference, Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference with two selections while the entire FCS saw 15 players drafted.

c – co-champions # - Jacksonville vacated its 2010 co-championship as part of penalties for PFL rules violations. Notes on PFL Championship: From 1993-2000 – and returning to the format in 2005 – the PFL was composed of one division and the championship was awarded to the team with the best conference record. From 2001-2005, the league expanded and split into two divisions with the divisional winners, who were the teams with the best record against divisional opponents, facing off in a championship game, the winner of that game was awarded the league’s championship.

NOTES: The PFL records on this page reflect PFL penalties imposed against Jacksonville (# - vacated 30 wins during the 2010-14 seasons) and San Diego (% - vacated 7 wins during the 2013 season). In accordance with NCAA policy, the wins and ties, but not the losses, of the penalized team are dropped from its PFL record only. The won-lost records for each of the opposing teams are not changed when games are vacated. In addition, the overall records for both teams were not changed.
