The proposals of the companies operating in the contract sector, each with its innovations, offer a starting point for some thoughts on how to deal with a highly evolutionary phase and great competition. The uncertain political situation is certainly not help to an economy that has long shows serious difficulties. Yet it is precisely this desire to overcome difficulties to suggest solutions, to give strength to find new cards and win the game. But the cause of the trouble can not be attributed only to those in the market. If some companies have increased their turnover, if others have consolidated their, despite the problems, the reason has to be there. In a world of rapid evolution is not always easy to keep the right pace, but this does not authorize not to seek the reasons for a crisis. If things do not always go well, if the so-called miracle of Italian design has finished his high phase, there will also responsibilities. Even designers, certainly. But even those companies that have not always understood that in addition to a capacity of vision, the key to success can be sought only in design, and that the design is a unique value that needs to will and awareness to give results. A value that can not be flattened on market research: because the market asks what he already knows, while the design is innovation.

NEWS VIMAR AT RELAIS SAN LORENZO IN BERGAMO
In Bergamo Alta is the Relais San Lorenzo is a unique place, where living history, luxury, nature, wellness and excellent cuisine. The modern profile of the structure, interlaced with stone walls and ancient rendering of the historic buildings that surround it, it is surprising for beauty and harmony. The Relais is located in one of the oldest walled Italian city where you can go through a journey in art, culture and living through the experience of a stay exciting, relaxing and unique. The services of a modern luxury blend with the seduction of a place where history lives with strength and charm. Once inside, in addi-
tion to the refined atmosphere, the visitor's eye captures an element that can not go unnoticed: the plates Eikon Evo by Vimar - here finished in anodized aluminum gray washes - give ample display of selfframing switches, sockets and controls in both the public areas and rooms. Their shapes are a new definition of style and a new level of luxury that makes the wiring a real piece of furniture. Set like jewels in the glass of the mirrored walls of the suites in the wood headboards or marble tops in bathrooms, Eikon Evo devices provide the ultimate in elegance. A wide range of outlets - from the ones for razors positioned
in the bathrooms to the phone - meets every need functional. Finally, discrete but very useful, the lamps marked step with the latest generation of LED speakers are positioned at strategic points, to take guests along light paths that are activated only in the event of a power failure. BERCHTESGADEN YOUTH HOSTEL IN GERMANY www.l-a-v-a.net
BY ERIKA GAGLIARDINI
LAVA’s reinterpretation of an existing youth hostel has resulted in a completely new type of space. The transformation of the youth hostel is underway! The characterization of the spaces is the key part of the intervention: LAVA has achieved this through the reorganization of the existing volume, so you can offer a variety of rooms. A restyling is not only aesthetic, but sustainable through the use of local materials and craftsmanship and the facade low energy, the installation of a biomass heating system underfloor powered pellet. Intervention by the architect Alexander Rieck, director of LAVA, called: "through the analysis of the types of the hostels we proposed an intervention with its originality and uniqueness of the experience creates an authentic and innovative concept of hostel"

YOUTH HOSTEL
Which is the design idea to face the complexity of a modern hospitality structure? What did you think? won the competition to redesign the 1930s Haus Untersberg Berchtesgaden for the German Youth Hostel Association. We were commissioned to rethink what a youth hostel could be in the age of boutique hotels. The main task was to combine the strong history of the site with funky design elements and the facilities demanded by the modern young traveler. The strategy was quite clear: strengthen the community spirit and totally change the comfort by bringing today’s standards into the rooms. Recent developments in the hotel sector reveal an increasing trend towards the 5-star luxury segment on one hand, and on the other, the growing appeal of the individually designed basic hotel. Our research with the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany helped us to understand what the hotel of the future looks like. We carefully looked at wellbeing parameters such as light, materials, colours things that make you feel good. The research has shown that success of designer hotel typologies is a combination of clearly defined concepts, quality materials, and furniture with spaces that stimulate activity, group interaction, and a sense of community. The originality of the environment together with the uniqueness of the experience creates an authentic concept. Hostels can be everything from a hut to a castle, so we felt that standardising was the wrong approach. Contemporary spaces for people to gather, with the motto 'experience community', was our starting point to redefine private and public areas. This social aspect and the fact that the DJH youth hostels are not short term business-driven meant we could also incorporate quality. That made a vast difference at each level: space, material and interaction with nature.

For the Youth Hostel how did you work on interior design? How do you synthesise the project? LAVA achieved this by the clever reorganisation of the existing volume resulting in different types of bedrooms each with it’s own bathroom and of high quality. And we created new precedents: multipurpose areas, previously unheard of; authentic designs inspired by the historic context; individualised rooms with integrated storage to avoid the barracks style appearance of the typical youth hostel; ecological quality of materials and manufacturing details; and the integration of old and new by contrasting local materials and craftsmanship, colours and textures. Each room has its own colourful bathroom box. No more tripping over backpacks, thanks to the ample baggage storage and locker facilities. These internal built-in zones also link with the external – connections to the surrounding landscape are provided through large, panoramic “window boxes”, which cantilever from the façade and act as seating, table areas, viewing platforms and relaxation elements. Of course reducing the overall energy usage to create a highly efficient building was imperative. This included a low energy facade, floor heating, the installation of a bimass pellet heating system and the use of local materials and craftsmanship.
Hospitality Outdoor Luxury Building Yachting Office Retail
PROJECTS / INTERVIEW Which are the criteria followed in the selection of materials and which application do they have in the interior design? Which materials did you use? We used colour to organise the building into visually coherent zones, and to differentiate the new from the old. We chose natural materials with a texture (wood not laminate flooring) or homogeneous coloured surfaces (green finishing on walls and parts of the beds). These strong bright colours contrast with the natural, regionally sourced materials, which feature quality fitting and meticulous workmanship for facades and furnishings. The wood used for flooring and the facade is local larch.
The lighting project how they were resolved? Large, panoramic window boxes cubes that cantilever from the façade – are great spaces for hanging out, and connect to the surrounding landscape.

extending along its centre. The cloistered area at the centre of the abbey has been transformed into an 88seat restaurant with tables that look out through new freestanding glazed walls towards the herb garden. The restaurant extends into an adjacent chapter house, where banquettes with high padded backs were designed to sit on top of the existing stone surfaces. A former refectory has been transformed into a banqueting hall with an eight-metre-long dining table at its centre. A line of candles placed along the length of the table is intended to recreate the monastic ambience of the original refectory, while four textile triptychs hung along one wall help to reduce echoe. At one end of the space, bench seating provides a relaxation and reading area in front of a large fireplace. The renovation process took more than two years and involved rebuilding buttresses and a tower on two sides of the building, rearranging the spaces to accommodate bedrooms and removing flagstone floors to install underfloor heating, all without damaging the original fabric of the priory. Baccarat Madison Avenue flagship store blends delicate and rigid details depicted in the finely cut crystal details. This astonishing retail project, designed by Rafael de Càrdenas, has a bright, twostory glassy-frit façade which is patterned with arrays of triangles, creating a 3D illusion on a 2-dimensional surface. Interior entry walls are wrapped in faceted strips of Macassar Ebony and mirror. This geometry reflects both the natural light from the façade and tiers of grand crystal chandeliers. Nordic Black granite is used as a high-contrast backdrop to display Baccarat crystal, while niches of white gold leaf highlight special products. Nods to classical French design such as diamond wood flooring and ceiling molding details, infuse the space throughout.
