Over and beyond every time and every place, we easily let ourselves be transported, seeking new creative expressions and scenarios that have never been imagined, along a course that can be taken beyond fashion, between design and lifestyle. This is what PW PLACESWEB suggests. In identifying trends it has associated places, and people apparently worlds apart, yet, joined by an expressive and illuminating contemporaneity. An intermingling without coordinates. A certain gamble, but never with an end in itself. Expressive elements become part of our everyday life. Language has changed in the wake of these forms of hyper-rapid communication. Different in aspect and style, the experimental trends where art and technique come together to create tasteful decorations.

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT OF THIS ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT?

AMBASSADORI HOTEL

The Ambassadori Hotel in Tbilisi, located in the historical center of the capital city of Georgia, has been significantly enlarged during the past three years according to the project by Studio D73 Arch. Marco Vismara & Arch. Andrea Viganò. A completely new building of 9,000 square meters, based on the architectural project of the local firm Qalaqproeqt, has been added to the historical part of the hotel – almost 4,000 square meters – built in the Eighties and kept in its original conditions.

The building, recently renewed, includes 121 rooms 83 of them are new – and a presidential suite which will open soon, on five floors. The new Ambassadori Hotel contains also a Spa, an Italian restaurant and a Casino in the basement which will open soon, too.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SUMMARIZE THE PROJECT METODOLOGY APPLIED TO HOTEL AMABASSADORI? The newly completed building is a fine and elegant five-star hotel, where Made in Italy has a starring role. D73 proposed an eclectic style: a classic and elegant theme with some contemporaneous points; here, the main topic is the custom made attention for the project. Specific attention has also been paid to the details, especially for the elements created by the Italian workforce who worked there and whose works was well integrated with the local artisans in a cultural dialogue between Italy and Georgia. An example of this is the wide use of wrought iron that frames the stairs and all the windows facing the central hall; wrought iron has also

8

been used for the external façades: it is a typical Georgian element which has been combined with precious marbles, elegant textiles, important decoration, valuable wood, crystals, soft leathers. Everything has been looked after from the artisans who have made a tailor-made work for Ambassadori. Ambassadori Hotel is the most prestigious touristic place in the whole Georgian capital: this is due to the new building and also to the noteworthy location where it stands, in the heart of the old city just in front of the massive Presidential Palace, overlooking Kura river and Shavteli Street, the old central road of Tbilisi, full of restaurants and nice places.

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW WHICH ACTIVITIES DID YOU CHOOSE FOR THE INTERIOR DESIGN?

AMBASSADORI HOTEL

At the entrance of the new Ambassadori building, the guest is immediately welcomed by a warm and fine space and a cascade of lights fascinates his eyes: they are the lighting stars by Reflex, made on “Stella Lampada” model but exclusively customized for this project. They enlightens the entrance with many white and just five amber stars, recalling the Hotel category. The first cascade is the prelude to a second and more majestic one, made with six groups of lights that dominate the central hall and go up to the 5th floor of the Hotel. On the background, the light composition is enriched by a 12 meter backlit onyx sheet, just behind the two welcome desks, in backlit onyx, too. All around, the walls are covered with two kinds of leather – a bright one for the pillars and a dark one for the walls, with a different finishing. They will take the guest on

one hand to the basement where a new Casino will open soon, and on the other to the restaurant. The hall is surrounded by wrought iron elements made by the local artisans that recall the old Ambassadori building. At the entrance of the restaurant, guests are welcomed by a bright space, full of light, with prestigious finishing and important details. This large room can guest up to 130 covers; it is lighted by fine and elegant Zonca lights (wall light mod. Mathilde, table light mod. Diderot and ceiling light mod. Margot) and furnished by Francesco Molon furniture, all of great style and prestige. The restaurant overlooks a nice public park on one side with a winter garden decorated with iron elements by DFN and, on the other side, it overlooks Shavteli Street, the historic street of old Tbilisi.

The close cooperation with Francesco Molon company for this project by D73 stands out not only in the common areas of the Hotel, but especially in the custom made creation of all the types of rooms, from the standard one to the presidential suite. A good example is the 150 square meter executive suite number 502, which dominates the city from the fifth floor of the building: a classic elegant custom made room, with prestigious finishing such as wood work made by the local artisans on a D73 model and walls covered with textile. Guests can also find precious elements such as table lights by Paralume Marina and wall lights by Patrizia Volpato, Ege carpets and Francesco Molon furniture. Next to the room, there is a luxury bathroom realized in black and white marble on the walls and on the floor; the same colors are recalled by the big bathroom piece of furniture completed with Signorini Rubinetterie fittings. Studio D73 has realized a reserved project for seven suites and an executive suite of the Ambassadori Hotel, which is different from the other rooms for the design and the colors.

THE ATOLL HEG RETAIL PARK

BEAUCOUZÈ, France

D.G. The City of Angers has launched an ambitious economic and commercial project at the Buisson commercial zone. This zone covers 53 hectares, including more than 200,000 sqm reserved for the Atoll project.

17

PROJECTS / RETAIL WWW.PLACESWEB.NET

Behind the call for tender is the company SARA (for the development of the region of Angers), which was granted concession to develop the commercial zone, to be assisted by Angers Loire Développement and the company Sites et Commerces. The aim is to design a gateway to the town adapted to the scale of the region, and provide an architectural alternative to standard shopping centres. Located on the edge of the town of Beaucouzé, on a largely agricultural site, the Atoll is a slightly irregular ellipse shape. The layout and construction of the project reflect the existing landscape by adapting the nature of the land. The four poles, separated by four corridors, rise up like four great entry porches. The structure is covered with a white aluminium net, which is perforated and backlit. The shops of the Atoll are arranged in a dynamic layout, while the carpark blends into the garden. The buildings enveloppe, 8-12m from the main structure, provides a protected area behind the shops for deliveries, away from the customers view at the centre of the Atoll, and provides a clear passage for security services. The outer cover runs from the inside out, following the access porches up to the roof to form an awning covering part of the promenade. On the inside, the awning rises up over a glass wall offering views of the various shop fronts. The shop front can be seen clearly above and below the awning.

Smaller constructions, designed like smooth white concrete pebbles, punctuate the visitors promenade, creating more intimate areas in the style of a traditional street of shops. At the centre of the Atoll lie wooden-clad buildings sheltered by trees house restaurants, conveniences, a first-aid unit etc. The height of the building is limited to just 12 meters.

THE FACADE The shiny, mother-of-pearl white façade provides the building with unity, featuring a heat-lacquered finishing that reflects the light and surrounding landscapes. The enveloppe encloses and secures the building, and can be divided as follows: - from the ground up to around 3m high, the perforations are small in diameter in order to conceal views from outside - from 3-12m high, the perforations are shaped as diamonds of varying sizes. The rounded shape of the façade provides a subtle effect based on natural light - above the height of 12m, the façade curves horizontally and opens up, in compliance with security restrictions in case of fire. The façade complies with environnemental performance requirements, while limiting the visual pollution from deliveries and the compaction of waste.

THE LANDSCAPE The Atoll features 60,000 sq.m. of greenery in and around the centre. These areas are planted with 580 trees and more than 15,000 bushes. The trees are mainly maples (Acer palmatum, Acer ginnala, Acer saccharinum), hornbeams, Scots pines, as well as oaks (Quercus robur) and weeping willows (Salix babylonica). The landscape plays a major part in the projects design, from the outlying areas of the grounds to the inner courtyard, not to mention the buildings porches, the carpark and the roof garden at the centre of the plot. The three carpark access routes join at the centre of the Atoll around a planted ring. Around the ring, the land dips down where run-off water can be evacuated.

20

PROJECTS / RETAIL WWW.PLACESWEB.NET

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT The HQE approach and fulfilment of the environmental quality charter guided the architectural design and techniques. With the help of specialists in the project management team, particularly in the fields of bioclimatic design, the simulation of thermal dynamics, renewable energy and natural lighting, each of the areas of the environmental quality charter were analysed. Special attention was paid to energy management, given that the tertiary sector is the main consumer of energy in France with nearly 40% of total consumption. In 2009, the Atoll was awarded French certification for tertiary sector buildings (HQE®) by Certivéa. To encourage the architectural quality and landscape aspects, several targets were qualified as "high performance": the relationship between the building and its immediate environment, the management of waste, acoustic and olfactory comfort. Other targets were qualified as "good performance": the low environmental impact of the worksite, the management of energy and water.

LIGHTING The Atoll is surrounded by a line of white mother-ofpearl casing one and a half km long. The ellipse, which curves up at the top, is entirely backlit, with colours varying from white to red, from gold to sky blue. The evanescent effect of the light brings out the perforated pattern and creates a subtle mashrabiyya effect wich blends in with the surrounding landscape and provides a local landmark. The inside of the casing along the promenade is also backlit with a single pure white light, allowing the shop fronts to be clearly visible.

Designed by Tarik Oualalou and Linna Choi, the tent harmonizes contemporary design and technical innovation with traditional fabrication methods. Constructed from more than 650m² of camel and goat wool woven by female cooperatives in the Saharan desert, the tent serves as an urban landmark and a symbol for the “Contemporary Morocco” exhibit. The rhythm and scale of the tent’s silhouette renders a topographic dimension to the structure which pays homage to the nomadic traditions of southern Morocco. SO-IL Brooklyn,NY FRIEZE ART FAIR, NEW YORK Randall’s Island, situated in between Manhattan, Bronx and Queens is one of the few pieces of open land in New York City large enough to accommodate the 225,000 sf, 1500 ft long structure. Working with a prefabricated rental structure forced us to be inventive with a limited vocabulary. Pie-shaped tent section wedges are inserted between six tent sections to relax and open up the standardized system, and offer amenities at each section as a moment of recess. The wedges bend the otherwise straight tent into a meandering, supple, shape. The winding form animates it on the unusual waterfront site, as well as establishing the temporary structure as an icon along the water. The wedges divide the relentless length of the fair into manageable sections. Rather than exposing the end gable section at each end of the tent, we extended the tent roof fabric in stripes, dissolving the tent into the ground. The playful entrances introduce visitors to the experience within.

HHD_FUN ARCHITECTS JNBY - SHANGHAI, China JNBY in Shanghai is an event space designed byHHD_FUN, hosting fashion shows, concerts and corporate events. The design was developed alongside the notion of the international image of JNBY and COTTON USA, and so a practical and an environmentally friendly approach was taken. Based on the formation of origami triangles, combined with the use of the latest parametric design tools and topological analysis, the unique structural design was formed. Each design was achieved from a process of continuous deformation and manipulation of one triangular surface, resulting in a shape which corresponds to the overall layout. The archways, acting as an entrance or an interlocking face, have corresponding dimensions to other archways and so increasing the number of possible overall forms. Within the structure soft furnishings are laid out in a manner influencing the flow of movement through the tent. Interactive installations and laser demonstrations were installed at particular areas of the tent to create the required upbeat atmosphere. The tent itself is created from a steel structure with a taut elastic waterproof material with translucent properties. The material, provided by COTTON USA was made from low-carbon footprint products, creating a biologically friendly installation with a major advantage of being able to be easily re-installed and re-used in the future, with a new form.

PROJECTS FLASH/ HOSPITALITY OPERA GMBH & CO. KG SÜDPACK - OCHSENHAUSEN, GERMANY For the 50th anniversary of the German company Südpack, Opera GmbH & Co. KG designed a large event hall sheltered by a tarpaulin. The firm employed a design of curved supporting elements that allow for the tent to be reshaped and configured for various uses. For this occasion we constructed the closed Quadro variant of the basic dimensions 18x21 and with a roofed over area of more than 2000m². The Quadro consists of 4 individual roods that may be joined together by way of an intermediate tarpaulin to form a large event hall. In this way a self-supporting room more than 35m in size with impressively dome-shaped roofed areas is created. Thanks to the curved design of the end and intermediate tarpaulins the tent may be shaped individually. In this way it is possible to create both partially open and completely closed rooms and equip them differently.

The complex structural system that allows for this effect is covered completely by sand, giving the architecture a beachy and airy aura, Inventing a new building typology to provide shade, seating, cool air, and a space to play for the city’s public. The design practice, co-founded by Julian Rose and Garrett Ricciardi in 2010, approaches new projects with an interest in the specifics of geography — closely examining the spatial, social, and physical conditions of the location with which their structure will interact. They prioritize the use of available materials, committing to deploy them in ways that allow for reuse, an approach that produces what they refer to as “an architecture that can go from nothing to something and back again.”

The restoration and transformation for the former Kas Bank building will rejuvenate this national monument converting it into a five-star W hotel. The building, originally designed by F.W.M. Poggenbeek in 1908 was expended in phases until 1932. The building follows the classical typology of bank buildings with vaults on the ground floor and basement, a monumental bank hall on the first floor and offices above. The building is one of the first concrete constructions in the Netherlands and is finished with a sandstone facade. The new design respects the building monumental character, enhances it and transforms it into a public building. The ‘Bank’ building will house a spa, a destination bar and luxurious restaurant. Along the Spuistraat it includes a ‘creative incubator’ for Dutch talent to showcase their fashion, art and design work. The upper floors house 66 guestrooms and suites as extension of the W hotel opposite located in the former Government Office for Transactions and Telephony. The historical elements of the building, such as the façade, the vaults, the public hall and the staircases are carefully restored. The added components are distinguished by contemporary materials and restrained detailing, making them reconizable but harmonizing with the existing building. C.A.

It includes two concert halls - one of about 2,000 seats, the other 550 seats - and also includes a hotel for almost 250 rooms, 44 apartments and some outdoor areas, overlooking the River Elbe. In addition to the main hall characterised by its “Weinberg architecture”, the concert house also has a smaller hall, which was furnished with Thonet chairs just like the Kaistudio. The supply of 760 chairs of range S 160by Delphin Designprovide concert goers with comfortable seating. The beautifully designed chair is especially well suited for the Elbphilharmonie due to its flexibility: it can be stacked quickly and in a space saving way, and it has a sophisticated linking mechanism – thanks to a system especially developed by Thonet, the chairs can be linked easily, safely and without tools. The discrete seat numbering in the backrest and the removable row numbering are ideally suited for furnishing concert halls. The completely black chair version S 162 PVFused for the Elbphilharmonie with leathercovered, fully upholstered seat shells and a matte coated frame with a special seat depth discretely blends the elegantly milled wood panelling of the small hall. Thonet was able to fulfil the strict requirements of acoustician Yasuhisa Toyotaby using a special type of leather that was additionally perforated. The various uses of the intimate and versatile hall – ranging from chamber music and song recital evenings to soloist concerts, jazz and world music and to readings, lectures and receptions – are enabled by the excellent technological equipment and flexible seating with the Thonet chair range S 160. Fratelli Boffi designs a series of custom-made projects for the restyling of the famous Rampoldi restaurant, gone through a complete renovation lead by architect Piero Manara (Casamanara) and inaugurated in June 2016. Originally opened in 1949, inside the carré d’or of the famous district of the Principality, the Rampoldi restaurant in Monte Carlo is not simply a restaurant but a historical institution. Fratelli Boffi’s creations have been tailor made exclusively for this location – based on the architect’s project – contributing to the convey of a sumptuous and luxurious atmosphere, thanks to the elegant and sophisticated aesthetic of their shapes. From squared dining tables, to modular benches and padded seats, the décor gives life to a refined environment, unveiled in every detail and finishing, embellished by suffused lighting, delicate creme-colored nuances and the harmonious chromatic use of the ton sur ton. The soft and sinuous lines of the smoking area, as in every corner of the restaurant, enhance the value of the materials selected, amongst which is the fine art of cabinet-making – characteristic essential to Fratelli Boffi – matched to the precious finishings and researched materials. The Fratelli Boffi production reveals all its potential: its natural attitude to the creation of custom projects, the inclination towards precious materials and an incredible attention to detail, characteristics that for nearly a century distinguish the Italian company. For a better understanding of the high level of design available on the market of prefabricated bathroom pods, perfectly in harmony with the most demanding requirements of the contemporary architecture, it is worthwhile getting to know Eurocomponents, an Italian company whose products are ideal for the new construction industry, especially for projects of high architectural quality. Among Eurocomponents’ many case histories, three of them are of particular interest. All three projects are exclusive hotels with different designs, targets and geographic positions but are all united by the desire to achieve excellent aesthetical and functional results, all the while optimizing costs.

EUROCOMPONENTS BATHROOM PODS PART OF THE DESIGN IN PRESTIGIOUS HOTELS

The first hotel is the Britannia Hotel. Located in Trondheim, it is one of the most prestigious hotels in Norway. Known as the “White Swan” of Trondheim, the hotel is famous for its style and quality of service. Inaugurated in 1870, it is a historical hotel and has always been an important meeting place for Trondheim’s citizens. Today Britannia Hotel is Trondheim’s classic 5 star hotel and the hotel wants to preserve this position even after the extensive refurbishment and extension that the hotel is now going through. Eurocomponents will deliver two different bathroom typologies, in total 168 bathroom pods, with shell in steel frame and fiberboard panels on a concrete floor base. The client was astonished by the high level of finish and craft-

smanship when inspecting the mock-up bathroom at the factory. There were some doubts beforehand regarding whether it would be possible to build such a complex and highly tailor-made product in an industrial environment. Among the many customised technical and tailor-made features, the following are particularly of interest: walls, vanity top and shelves in Carrara Venatino marble, marble floor with fishbone pattern and specially made taps with bronze finish. A series of customized technical solutions have also been developed in order to satisfy the client’s requests, among others an internal shaft positioned behind the wall of the WC was created to resolve the problem with lack of space in the building.

A second example is the Clarion Hotel in Helsinki, part of Jätkäsaari, a new and innovative area of the city. Clarion hotel is part of the group Choice Hotels International, one of the largest hotel groups in the world. Eurocomponents supplied 431 bathroom pods to Clarion Hotel Helsinki, divided into 7 different typologies, of which 12 are suites.

47

It is worth noting the flexibility of Eurocomponents in adapting deliveries based on the changes in the client’s delivery schedule, even after production start, in order to supply all bathrooms just-in-time for installation on site.

The third structure is the Hôtel Des Bains in Saillon, one of the most prestigious hotel and spa facilities in the Valais Canton, in Switzerland. For the realisation of the hotel, the client was focused on using local, refined raw materials and Eurocomponents produced and delivered 78 unique bathroom pods with particular details such as vanity top and shelves in aged oak, floor and wall fi-

nish in Salvan stone and custom-made shower screens in tempered glass. The bathrooms were made in reinforced concrete and supplied in 2 different typologies. In addition a fixed window in tempered glass was fitted into the wall providing a view of the room. Vertical venetian blinds in aged oak matched the internal finishes of the bathroom as well as the hotel’s external facade.
