POSITION PURPOSE: Responsible for the personal security of students and employees of the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) and the physical security of WCPSS buildings. Provides support to school-based administrators in the areas of investigations, school security and in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES  Extensive knowledge of the practices, procedures, standards and regulations regarding law enforcement and/or investigations;  Effective oral and written communication skills;  Skills in analysis and problem-solving;  Organizational skills;  Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office software programs;  Ability to handle multiple projects and remain calm, professional and functional during stressful circumstances;  Ability to work independently and prioritize work assignments and resources;  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, representatives of government, volunteer organizations, public officials and business/community organizations. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university;  Five years of experience in law enforcement, investigations, public safety or other security services fields;  Experience interacting with representatives of government, volunteer organizations, public officials and business/community organizations. CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS  Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Certified in CPR, AED and Basic First Aid. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Responsible for being on-call to respond to after-hour emergencies;  Works one week of 24/7 on-call duty on a rotation schedule with all security administrators.

POSITION DESCRIPTION ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Conducts thorough investigations of incidents involving the Wake County Public School System, including interviews of students and WCPSS personnel. 2. Investigates policy violations which may lead up to search and seizure, including the search of students, vehicles, lockers and facilities. 3. Coordinates and provides security for the protection of dignitaries at various school functions as well as provides security at student assignment hearings, school board meetings, periodic athletic events and high school graduation. 4. Maintains internal intelligence concerning threats of violence and for statistical purposes so that violation patterns can be detected and remedial plans implemented. 5. Performs field tests of illegal substances and for the detection of alcohol. 6. Plans, coordinates and participates in periodic canine searches on WCPSS school campuses. 7. Prepares reports and testimony at juvenile court proceedings and student due process hearings as well as maintains custody of evidence and coordinates with law enforcement agencies for court presentations and testimony. 8. Maintains knowledge and understanding of North Carolina General Statues pertaining to school board requirements in order to assist school administrators during incidents, including law enforcement notification requirements and issues involving juvenile law. 9. Maintains a thorough understanding and application of Board policy including the Code of Student Conduct and provides interpretations of policy to school-based administrators. 10. Participates in parent conferences and other meetings with school administrators as needed. 11. Gives presentations on school security related topics to large groups such as school staff, PTA organizations and other groups requesting security and safety information in our school system. 12. Coordinates activities that involve both sworn law enforcement and private security personnel. 13. Participates in situations that involve Wake County Emergency Management, mental health agencies and the juvenile court system. 14. Keeps up to date with student assignment procedures and conducts residency checks when requested. 15. Prepares written security risk assessments of school system sites and properties. 16. Keeps abreast of studies and awareness of security related technologies and strategies. 17. Provides investigative summary reports when requested. 18. Assists schools with coordinating and executing emergency proactive action drills. 19. Performs other related duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Physical requirements are consistent with those for moderate work in an office and in-the-field settings. Be able to use a variety of equipment such as computers, copiers and communications equipment. Be able to lift, carry, push or pull 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Due to the amount of time spent standing, walking or working on a computer, physical requirements are consistent with those for medium physical work. The work requires activities involving driving automotive equipment. WORK ENVIRONMENT Primary work location is an office environment. Employee in this position is required to work in both indoor and outdoor settings. Direct contact with WCPSS staff, students, parents, outside agency personnel and the general public is frequent and expected. In-system travel is required. Work may require exposure to moderate risk to physical health and /or physical safety.
