Each book features a Word Family.

In the first book, Pat and the Hat, “at” is the Word Family. The Family Words in that book are: at, bat, cat, hat, mat, Pat, rat, sat, that. The student learns many words with ease when they are grouped by Word Families. Reading Books Together

The student reads the Family Words and Sight Words which are in large print. The teacher reads the rest of the words which are in small print. The student’s reading vocabulary increases with each book as the student progresses through the program. Note: The books may be read from a printed copy or on your screen using the single sided books. The benefits of reading books together are:

• It helps the student to stay on task. • It is less tiring for the student. • It is a shared experience for the student and teacher. • The stories are more interesting because the text is not limited to only words that the student can read.

Printable Word Picture Cards: Family & Sight Words

There are Word Picture Cards for each of the 570 Family Words and Sight Words presented in the Word Family Readers Program. These Word Picture Cards are used to help the student learn the new words for each book. Using pictures with words makes this easy! Then when a student is reading a word without the picture, he or she visualizes the picture which helps the student recall the word. These cards are also useful when reading the book together. If a student needs help with a word, the teacher shows a word picture card to help the student recall the word.

R E A DE R S About Us

We are a mother and daughter team. We’ve created and produced this program from start to finish (along with the help of friends and family proof-reading and checking our work).* Arlene Martin is the mastermind behind the reading program we call “Word Family Readers.” She is a reading tutor, veteran preschool teacher, a published author and holds a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. Jenni Willoughby is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator — the one who created the book drawings and makes all of our resources “look pretty.” We hope that you will take some time to check out our program and consider how it could be a very valuable tool in your classroom, with the students you tutor, your children at home or wherever you teach.

It’s for ANYONE learning to read!

*Sue Verschoof, Anita Ferguson and Barbara Densmore proofread our work. Their attention to grammar, spelling, clarity and continuity was of great help.
