GTHA – the world’s most livable region?

Strengthen our communities: • Connect neighbourhoods with high unemployment rates to more jobs • Reduce the cost of commuting • Enhance upward income ability

EIU Livability Survey (August 2016)

The GTHA currently ranks as the 4th most livable region in the world, however with the worst commuting times in Canada, it’s a Overall ranking 4th significant issue holding our 1st • Stability region back. 1st • Healthcare With investments in transportation 2nd • Culture & Environment infrastructure, it could be the most • Education 1st livable region in • Infrastructure 40th the world.

Reduce congestion and GHG emissions: • Even a 3% increase in transit use by commuters along the ‘Northern Arc’ could remove approximately 55,000 car trips in the area

A personal vehicle costs about $200,000 over 25 years Create jobs and make our businesses more competitive: • Allow for the creation of 15,000-30,000 new jobs in the airport area alone • Provide employers with better access to employees and help them retain talent • Facilitate more efficient movement of goods

A major ground transportation hub along the Northern Arc would: • Allow commuters to move suburb to suburb without going through downtown Toronto, reducing congestion at Union Station • Reduce the number of connections required, encouraging greater transit use CAMBRIDGE

Connecting job and innovation zones throughout the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) would amplify the benefits of transit.

Over 60% of transit trips across the Northern Arc require at least one connection, with over 20% requiring two or more. Only 35% of trips downtown require a connection.

Why is better transit needed in the west GTHA? Toronto Pearson is a strategic location for a major ground mobility hub in the West GTHA

Growing demand: West GTHA will account for 34% of GGH’s growth in coming decades

1. Good geography: Located at the intersection of major demand areas from the GTHA West to the Northern Arc.

West GTHA generates 4.5M trips per day 2. Connecting capacity: Demand would enable increased high frequency service

Only 7% of these trips are by transit

3. Strong catchment: Local employment and airport travellers generate nearly 1M trips per day 4. Strategic transit carriers: Located at the boundary of three major municipalities and connecting bus lines 5. Accessibility: Close to several planned and existing rail links and four major highways.
