ANDY VASILY TEACHER AND EDUCATION CONSULTANT NANJING INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, CHINA

BIO

Andy Vasily is a leading teacher who has taught at International Baccalaureate schools in 4 different countries over the past 15 years. He completed his teaching training at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. Andy is currently teaching at Nanjing International School in China, but is moving over to a full-time role as an international educational consultant beginning in August 2015. Andy previously worked as a Child-Youth Counsellor at a young offender’s facility in Windsor, Ontario and it was through this experience that he first realized the stumbling blocks and injustices that many of these young people faced in their daily experience. As a direct result of seeing a need for change, he pursued a full-time career as an educator. Wanting to push his own understanding of teaching and learning to a deeper level, Andy made the decision to begin blogging in order to share his teaching practice and connect with other educators and top researchers around the world. The value that he saw in this exchange of vision and practical applications led to an enriched professional learning journey that he has shared with practitioners and scholars alike. Andy is an innovator in the area of education and has continued growing his commitment to student learning by bringing the global community together to create meaningful progress in the way students learn around the globe.

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

REACHING WITHIN TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE There is no question that teaching is a very demanding job that requires us to stay motivated if we are to have the impact that we desire on our students. The importance of looking within and defining our purpose plays a pivotal role in helping to sustain our levels of motivation over time. Achieving excellence is much more accessible when we realize that we have the power to change lives forever. Mastery and mindset plays a critical role in this process.

WHO SAID HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS COULDN’T TEACH SEXUALITY EDUCATION?

TEACHING SKILLS AND GAMES IN PE – A TECHNICAL OR TACTICAL APPROACH?

DR DEBBIE OLLIS

RAY BREED

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY

ST LEONARD’S COLLEGE

The nature of sexuality education has changed over the past 20 years. No longer is an approach based the prevention of diseases, pregnancy and sexual assault adequate to meet the needs of the young people in our schools.

Teaching practical physical education is a real challenge as we strive to find a balance between FMS development and game skills. We often hear students say ‘when can we play a game’ and teachers often say ‘we can’t teach a game before the students can do the skills’. In this feature presentation we learn that using game sense approaches effectively in physical education is so much more than just playing games.

Many HPE teachers have little background in sexuality education, are concerned about parental backlash and are reluctant to cover some of the more sensitive sociocultural issues with students, such as gender and violence, gender and sexual diversity, pleasure and desire. The reality, many are required to teach sexuality education without the undergraduate preparation to effectively cover the breadth necessary to provide the comprehensive, sex positive, socio-critical and inclusive approach outlined in new Heath and Physical Education Curriculum Guidelines (ACARA 2014). However, data collected from a range of studies indicate that HPE teachers might just provide the answer to improving practice.

Basic skill acquisition theory will be used to support the concept of teaching fundamental movement skills and game sense, along with age-appropriate activities. Content and curriculum models are investigated along with pedagogical strategies for developing student game skills (techniques and tactics). This session will outline strategies, such as questioning and constraints-based learning, with examples to increase your confidence, knowledge and skills to use a game sense approach, whilst also developing fundamental movement skills.

It is widely recognised that physical education (PE) and sporting programs have the potential to make primary school children active for the rest of their lives. The Australian curriculum aims to create physically literate children who are competent at fundamental movement skills, and have the knowledge and attitudes to live a healthy life. Unfortunately, for a number of years this potential has not been realised.  Increasing levels of sedentary behaviour and higher rates of childhood obesity have been accompanied by a decline in fundamental movement skills. A new children’s book ' Throw Hit Catch' written by Greg Chappell and Phil Kettle aims to use the power of literacy to capture children's imagination and help build their physical literacy in an innovative and fun way. This session will combine abstracts from the book read out by Phil with a practical session led by James taking you through the accompanying teachers' notes. The teachers' notes are aligned to the new ACARA PE curriculum and are designed to help physical education and classroom teachers work together to develop children's fundamental movement skills.

Is sugar really the bad guy? How to create critical health consumers

This session will explore how to embed the propositions of critical inquiry, health literacy and strengths based approach into your classroom practice. The hands-on activities will be drawn from the teaching resource that accompanies That Sugar Film and will unpack how the three propositions have informed the development of the learning activities. The session will explore how the same principles for developing learning activities can be applied when programming other content.

Fundamental sports skills are considered the most crucial element underpinning sports competence and physical literacy. Obese children and those with motor skill difficulties tend to avoid physical activity and games as a coping strategy due to frustration, fear of failure and poor self-efficacy within competitive environments. The primary objective of our research was to determine if foundation movements underpin fundamental sports skills as a preliminary assessment for physical education and physical literacy. Secondly to evaluate the effect gender, age, BMI and activity levels have on movement competency.

My interest is making quick connections with students, with a focus on the Affective Domain of psychology. A student who is having fun and being drawn in to an activity is much more likely to get value from what they are doing. I use these short and fun games in almost all classes and find they make the place buzzy, and make the kids happy and switched on. They are the ready to focus on the "meaty" part of the lesson. PAGE

So … what happens when children just don't get it or cannot perform basic age appropriate physical skills. It can be frustrating for the educator and makes us question our curriculum content and teaching strategies or to continually source ways to reach these children with developmental delays to give them a sense of achievement and belonging. (Trust me.. it is equally frustrating and more soul destroying for the children in question). The goal of this session is to experience different and creative ways that allow these children to learn, practice and improve their delayed skills as well as having a better understanding of the many reasons for these physical and developmental delays. Come dressed for activity and a whole load of fun and you will go away thinking differently about it all !
