SUMMER AT YOUR LIBRARY 2018 - READING TAKES YOU EVERYWHERE! Calling all globe trotters and adventure seekers - discover where reading can take you. there’s something for everyone— kids, youth, teens, and adults—this summer at your Library! Summer at your Library is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Arcadia public Library and community sponsors. Would you like to take part in the Library’s reading program and earn fun prizes along the way? Here’s how to participate: 1. beginning Saturday, may 26, register online at www.ArcadiaCA.gov/Library. 2. visit the Arcadia public Library and check out some great books to take home. 3. Read 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 cumulative minutes throughout the nine-week program. 100 minutes = 1 hour and 40 minutes 400 minutes = 6 hours and 40 minutes 200 minutes = 3 hours and 20 minutes 500 minutes = 8 hours and 20 minutes 300 minutes = 5 hours 4. Log your reading minutes online using the Library’s reading program database. 5. upon reading and logging 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 cumulative minutes, beginning monday, June 11, stop by the Library’s reading program prize table to report and receive your prizes! 6. When you have read and logged 500 cumulative minutes, you may then enter a bonuS ReAdinG Round to set/track your own personal summer reading goal and earn up to two additional reading rewards. 6th through 8th grade participants may also submit up to three book reviews throughout the nine-week program and earn a maximum of three raffle tickets for entry into a grand prize drawing at the end of the summer program. Book reviews must be at least five sentences, written in your own words, and reflect that you have read the reviewed book in its entirety. All reading time must be logged, book review(s) submitted online (for youth program), and earned prize(s)/raffle ticket(s) claimed by Saturday, July 28 before 5:30 pm. prizes will be available while supplies last.

We will kick off the event with fun kid activities and the dance performance will follow at 6:30pm. the event will take place on the Library’s Lawn, so please bring comfortable seating or a blanket.

paper Airplane Challenge All Ages thursday, June 7; 3:30 – 4:30pm test your aerodynamic skills by designing and constructing your own paper airplane. then conduct flight simulations with others to determine whose plane can fly the farthest, make it to a designated landing zone, and loop through the air. materials will be available while supplies last. younger children must be accompanied by an adult to assist with the activities.

Special performer – noteworthy puppets presents All Ages “Jack and the beanstalk: the puppet musical” Saturday, July 14; 2:30pm original songs and beautiful handmade puppets tell the classic hero’s tale of friendship, forgiveness and following your dreams. this interactive show with live singing and fun catchy songs in styles ranging from pop, Ragtime, big band, opera, and musical theater will have you moving to the rhythm!

Read-A-thon All Ages Saturday, June 9; 3:30 – 5pm Wear comfy clothes, bring your favorite pillow/blanket, grab a few Library books, and join our Saturday afternoon Read-A-thon. Spend a few minutes or a couple of hours reading and logging your reading time as part of the LibRARy ReAdinG CHALLenGe. then celebrate your reading accomplishments by joining us for an ice cream/popsicle party at the end of the Read-A-thon! exploratorium Ages 4 - 14 years tuesdays, June 12, 19, 26, July 3, 10, 17, & 24; 2:30 - 4pm visit the exploratorium and enjoy some of your all-time favorite activities such as LeGos and Four in a Row. each week we will also feature new hands-on activities to explore and discover. this is a drop-in program -- no registration required. the program is designed for ages 4 to 14 years. For each middle mondays program that you attend, earn a raffle ticket for entry into a grand prize drawing! 3-d de sign Club 4th - 8th grades mondays, July 2, 9, 16 & 23; 3:30 – 5pm the Library has a new 3-d printer and we invite kids entering 4th through 8th grades to join our 3-d design Club. in this workshop, we’ll learn how to create 3-d designs and how the printer produces these designs. each week attendees will have the opportunity to create their own designs, vote for the best design amongst the group, and the winning design will then be printed and given to the designer for keeps. program participants will be required to set up an online tinkercad account prior to the start of the first workshop. due to limited seating, registration is required for the 3-d design Club. in person registration begins Saturday, June 23 in the Arcadia public Library’s Jerry broadwell Children’s Room. 10 – 11am: priority registration for Arcadia residents. must show photo identification with proof of residency. 11am onward: open registration. if space is available, phone-in registration accepted starting monday, June 25.

Here and There: Artwork of Sid Bingham Saturday, April 14 – Saturday, June 2 the museum is proud to announce an exhibit featuring the artwork of Sid bingham. Sid studied with James Green, a renowned regionalist painter specializing in watercolors, at principia College. He paints wherever his travels take him, from local haunts to as far away as turkey, Africa, and europe-thus the title of his show: “Here and there.” Arcadia veterans Local History Room Featured Arcadia veteran: Richard Cordano – WWii navy opening reception: Saturday, June 30; 10am-12pm Richard Cordano was not only a long-time principal of Arcadia High School, he was also in the u.S. navy during WWii serving in the pacific. His military unit was on the u.S. Capricorns AKAS7, and he received the Asiatic-pacific, America Area, philippine Liberation, World War ii victory, and Good Conduct medals. Come and view his story in our Arcadia veterans Local History Room. this exhibit will run through June 2019.

Summer Fun ’n play is a free supervised program for children ages 5-12. this is a drop-in program, supervised by Recreation Leaders who provide a variety of organized recreational games and activities including: crafts, special events, cooking, movies, and tournaments. detailed flyers with dates, times and prices of weekly activities will be available at the program sites once opened for summer operation. ADULT CLASSES AduLt bASKetbALL Gather your friends, form a team and stay active in the adult basketball league. Whether it’s casual or competitive, there’s always an opportunity to keep fit and have fun. We offer six different levels of play based on your skill level. So, lace up your kicks and hit that jump shot. Games are played at dana middle School, in the dana Gym on Sundays between hours of 8am and 10pm. teams will be divided into divisions based on skill level. League fees are $500 plus a $40 forfeit deposit, which includes 10 league games, officials, scorekeepers, and championship awards. Registration will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event of injury or illness while the participant who is a minor is attending the recreation activity, I hereby authorize the City of Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Department to consent to medical treatment on behalf of the minor as deemed necessary. The undersigned, as parent or legal guardian of the child identified on this form, hereby authorizes the Recreation and Community Services Department and its officers, employees and agents into whose care the registered child has been entrusted, to consent to the advice of trained emergency personnel. This authorization to consent to treatment of the minor identified above is given to the Recreation and Community Services Department in conjunction with any activity or event in which the minor’s care is entrusted to the Recreation and Community Services Department. The Recreation and Community Services Department may take and use photos of participants for publicity purposes. Photos of participants are used in the City’s activity guide and other media publications. I hereby grant the City of Arcadia permission to use my, or if the participant is a minor, the minor’s likeness, name, voice and words in any broadcast, telecast or print media account of this event or activity free of charge.
